Course description:Art 100. Drawing I (ARTS 1316). 3 semester hours, 6 hours studio, 3 hours assignedindependent study per week. Fundamentals of drawing using various media.Fall, spring.

OBJECTIVES AND GOALS OF COURSE:

This studio courses stresses the importance of assessing the student'sability to see, developing an observational drawing process. Classphilosophy and studio methodology emphasizes personalconfidence through growth in drawing capability. Clearly statedassignment criteria, assessment strategies and goals areimplemented in teaching students to see. I rely on demonstratedprogress of skill in producing observational drawings, and studentsability to apply reflective discovery, portfolio reviews, critiques andaesthetic inquiry to assess student learning.

>Students will be able to create drawings based on observationalprocess in a limited number of media and translate a set of drawingguidelines into a personal artistic articulation.

>Students develop a necessary confidence through drawingcompetence and looking carefully at drawings, to launch thatstudent/ artist with hand and eye skills as well as analyticalperception toward the “wonder” of drawing with meaningfulpotential.

Explore and develop techniques / skills using various media to createpracticed observational based drawings..Originate skilled drawings within a defined observational process, inconjunction with composition, volume and space.

Exhibit growth in ability to translate 3-D still life forms to 2-D drawingshapes through observation strategies using line and value.

Apply critical analysis by looking carefully at drawings (their own andothers) to discover and solve problems of observation and constructimages applying art elements and principles

EVALUATIONS:

Student class work and outside class sketch journals are appraised,assessed or critiqued on a basis of specific assignment goalsdetermined through critical analysis of previous works.

Performance tests are given regarding problem solving , processexecution, organization fundamentals, deadlines and presentationprofessionalism.

Specific instruction for each assignment is given so students areaware of the performance/product quality standard ofachievement (excellence) sought.

Standards will be set through examples shown during the lecturesand their work assessed specific to goals stated in relation toassignments within each unit of study.

REQUIRED EXAMINATIONS:

Student originates, integrates combines new skills learned fromobservational strategies in each unit of study to produce drawingsfrom still life that reflect growth in competence. The course works are

compiled by units of study into a Portfolio that represents thedrawing accomplishment in relation to course goals.

Tests/critiques= students use class vocabulary to state and define , and explainprocess /principles used in work.GradingDrawing portfolio/ units of study = 70% improvement factored in as 2drawings)Sketch books (home work )= 20 %Written Exams/ critiques=10%Attendance can effect grade

Attendance Policy:This is a studio class. You must attend it to earn grade credits. 0nthe 4th absence grade is lowered one grade.

Class assignment calendar

1t day of class pre Instruction drawing to compare for improvement grade at the end ofthe semester.4 –5 weeks concentration on line study of observation drawing strategies (measuring /ratio , alignment, neg. pos space etc)Test and hand in 6 of best covering this works during this unit of study / critique andgrade4-6 weeks Value study = continue observation strategies + compositionTest and hand in 6 –8 drawings covering this works during this unit of study + critique,critical analyses

(introduced) Undergraduate students will exhibit proficiency in the application oftechnical and problem solving skills appropriate to their designated concentration, aswell as developing individual creativity: Art Education, Art History and Art Studio(Advertising Design, Art Metal/Jewelry, Ceramics, Cinematography, Digital Media,Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture).3. (introduced) Undergraduate students will compare their progress against models ofexcellence in the visual arts, which are provided through high quality extracurricular andextramural art activities.4. (introduced) Undergraduate students will design and implement art activities thatincrease the prominence, visibility and attendance to these events by the larger artcommunity appropriate to their designated field.

Ordinarily, at the discretion of the instructor of record and with the approval of theacademic chair/director, a grade of WH will be assigned only if the student cannotcomplete the course work because of unavoidable circumstances. Students mustcomplete the work within one calendar year from the end of the semester in which theyreceive a WH, or the grade automatically becomes an F. If students register for thesame course in future terms the WH will automatically become an F and will be countedas a repeated course for the purpose of computing the grade point average.
