The real difference is that animals, unlike humans, build in equilibrium withthe environment. Both the materialsthey use and their structures do notproduce hazardous or non-recyclable

waste. They leave the environmentnone the worse for their constructions. Abeaver dam may block the flow of a river causing mildflooding, or an ant colony may devastate a tree andeventually cause it to fall over. Such occurrences still exist

within the balance of an ecosystem. In contrast, humans completely alter the landscape.

Perhaps it is because the architectureof animals is so perfectly ingrainedwithin the ecosystem that we humansfail to see them for what they truly are -ingenious, resourceful, complex, prodigious and sophisticated architects

worthy of our respect and awe.

"The heart is hard that is not pleasedWith sight of animals enjoying life,Nor feels their happiness augment his own."

The most popular and perhaps the most interestingdepartment of natural-history study is that which treats of

the manner in which animals utilise the various materials ofthe universe for purposes of protection, for war anddefence, for raiment, food, and even the luxuries of life.

Man, by his superior power ofadaptation, excels the loweranimals in providing for the

comforts of life; but, on theother hand, in such practicalarts as engineering anddomestic architecture man

frequently finds himself anamateur in comparison. With allman's inventions he has not been able to equal some ofthe remarkable results produced by some animals. Thebeaver, for example, shows a more profound knowledge ofhydraulics than man himself. The power possessed bythese craftsmen, not only in felling trees, but in dulyselecting the best places for making homes and in

appropriating substances suitable for their needs, is anever-ending marvel!

Thus we see that these same scientists are accrediting theselittle architects with the possession of a great intelligence, andthey are thought to co-operate together in a manner expressiveof the greatest degree of efficiency and brotherly feeling. Each ofthese scientists gives a theory that leaves untouched theessential question of the causes for coral-reefs assuming their

various shapes; and it is reasonable tobelieve that they work accordingto a divine wisdom and plan, and that mankind does not yetunderstand their strange ways, which give us a higher conception of the universe than that held

by the ancients. Science has come tothe point where it mustrecognise the perfect unity of alllife, and that our fellow-architects, engineers, andhouse-builders in the animalworld also fill an important placein Nature's great scheme.
