informationThe Republic of Argentine, situated in South America, has an area of almost 3,800,000sq. km, of which 2,8 million are continental—approximately 54% are fiât lands (prairiesand savannas), 23% plateaus, and 23% hills and mountains— and thé Antarctic territory.It borders Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile. Argentina's geography variesconsiderably, from its extensive grasslands in thé east to thé impressive Andesmountain range in thé west, where thé Aconcagua (6,959m), thé highest summit in théwestern hémisphère, soars upwards. From Jujuy to Tierra del Fuego, thé Andes offer agréât variety of landscapes: from thé high tablelands in thé northeast —desert-like,with valleys, ravines and multicolored mountains— to thé Iakes, forests and glaciersrégion in thé Patagonia.To thé north, Chaco is a forest area irrigated by thé Bermejo,Salado and Pilcomayo rivers. To thé northeast, thé Argentine Mesopotamia, locatedbetween thé Paranâ and Uruguay rivers, is an area of low hills, lagoons and marshlands.The Iguazû Falls, one of thé most spectacular natural wonders in thé world, are in thémidst of thé subtropical forest. The country's central région is where thé mostwell-known and extensive grasslands are located: thé Pampas, an intense agriculturaland cattle raising center. This région comprises thé province of Buenos Aires, thénortheast part of La Pampa and thé southern portion of Côrdoba and Santa Fe.To thésouth, it borders thé smooth hills of Sierra deTandil and Sierra de laVentana,and tothewest, thé Sierras de Côrdoba. Further south, between thé Andes and thé oceanic coastline, thé Patagonian désert plateaus extend. Flanked by cliffs, thé Atlantic coast is hometo precious sea wildlife colonies, notably at Peninsula Valdés, in thé Province of Chubut.
Mild and humid in thé Pampas fiât lands;cold and humid in thé west end of théPatagonia; subtropical in thé north of théMesopotamia and warm in thé northeast.In thé country's central région thé meantempérature is 23° C from November toMarch and 12° C from June to September.
