Experimental imaging setup for strain field measurement during orthogonal cutting tests
A 3-axis milling centre (DMG model DMC85V) is used to perform the orthogonal cutting tests in planing configuration. Main features: Gantry-type machine architecture, equipped with 3 linear axes (connected to the milling head) having a maximum feed velocity of 120 000 mm/min. The specially-designed experimental imaging setup is composed of: double-frame sCMOS camera (LaVision model Imager sCMOS), Nd:YAG dual-pulsed laser (Litron model NS30-15) and telecentric lens
(Mitutoyo model ML 10x). A Kistler 9119AA2 piezoelectric dynamometer is also used for cutting and thrust force measurements. The cutting tool is attached to the milling head and the workpiece is fixed to the milling table, together with the dynamometer and the experimental imaging setup. In planing configuration, the milling table is static and the milling head moves along the x-axis to generate the tool motion (direction of primary motion or direction of vc).
