The 14 miRNAs of interest are hierarchically clustered (left column) based on the function of their mRNA targets (identified in DIANA miRPath with the microT-cds algorithm). The 14 miRNAs targeted mRNAs from 41 KEGG pathways with greater frequency than that expected by chance (including 9 brain-related pathways). The total number of mRNA targets for each miRNA are shown, as well as the number of mRNAs targeted in the 9 brain-related pathways. Note that three pairs of miRNAs which cluster here based on functional targets (miR-193a-5p/miR-125a-5p; miR-148a-5p/miR-944; and miR-620/miR-4705) were also clustered based on salivary concentration patterns among ASD, TD, and DD groups (Figure 1).

This bio-analyzer output from sample #2012 demonstrates robust peaks of small RNAs (including miRNA) at 25 nucleotides. In the present study small yields are specifically facilitate by the use of RNA stabilizing solution with saliva collection, an RNA extraction technique that enriches for small RNA, and the biophysical properties of miRNA in extracellular-fluid, which confer resistance to salivary endonucleases. Not that the yield and quality of miRNA are not always accurately reflected by a low RNA integrity number (RIN).
