As a result of high energy efficiency and spe-cial light quality, the role LEDs play in lighting is increasing. In 2020, the lighting market is expected to achieve a global volume of EUR 110 billion, a similar level to the TV market.

Despite relatively high costs, LED lighting systems are a coveted special accessory amongst car buyers. In addition to the safety

LED Markets

aspects, LED lights significantly enhance the look of a new vehicle and are therefore an absolute essential for many people. Light de-sign with LEDs not only plays an increasingly important role in the automotive industry, but in many other areas as well.

According to business consultancy firm McKinsey, the current European market for LED lighting is around EUR 1 Billion. General Lighting is the largest segment with a very high percentage of new LED-based products intro-duced. Retail and Architectural applications follow with the performance, reliability and design flexibility being the main advantages and along with outdoor lighting McKinsey pre-dict the largest growth in this area by 2020. Finally, industrial and office applications currently exhibit the weakest growth due to existing significant investments in traditional technology such as fluorescent lighting, perhaps providing the best opportunity for innovation.LEDs have spent the longest period of time

being used as backlighting. Manufacturers have been fitting mobile device displays with LEDs since the end of the 1990s. After mobile phones, larger products like laptops and TVs were gradually fitted with LED backlights, which was very beneficial to the overall devel-opment of the LED in the lighting market. LED lighting systems are not just stylish but are also very energy efficient and robust. Their low power consumption makes for strong market growth in the energy-conscious climate of Europe. For example, virtually all convention-al bulbs will be banned from 2012 for energy-saving reasons.

At present, halogen bulbs still provide an alternative, but the superior quality of the LEDs and the continuously falling prices level out the long-term success of LEDs. Manu-facturers, system providers and retailers can adapt themselves to a multi-layered clientele in the broadest industries.

Building a successful partnership starts by listening to each other, tell us how we can help you.

Lighting Project Flow

Designing a lighting system involves several steps (and iterations...) calling upon different competencies and technologies. With the objective of optimizing lifetime and reliability through a proper thermal management of the system, designers have to achieve the best possible electrical and optical efficiency, while of course keeping costs within target.

Starting from the light that has to be pro-duced, then shaping it with optics, removing the heat from the back of the LEDs, delivering to them the right current at the right voltage, safely connecting the system mechanically and electrically and then controlling when and how light should appear, these are some of the challenges faced when creating a solid state luminaire.

The Arrow lighting team will work together with you at every step of your project, from technical and design support to inventory and bin management, in order for you to achieve your time to market and cost goals.

The prices for energy continue to spiral and electricity in particular is becoming increas-ingly expensive due to the need for invest-ment in transmission networks. The potential to save power offered by using modern light-ing systems is enormous.

Experts estimate an energy saving of 7.5!bil-lion kilowatt hours for private lighting, 8.3!bil-lion kilowatt hours for industrial lighting and 3.2!billion kilowatt hours for office lighting. With 2.2!billion kilowatt hours, street lighting also offers significant power saving potential, particularly due to that fact that about a third of Germany’s street lighting is at least 20 years old. Modernisation would not only dras-tically reduce CO2 emissions, but also help to cut costs over the long term.

Municipalities have to modernise street lighting

There’s another reason why municipalities need to take action. They are under an obliga-tion to provide street lighting. The EU Ecode-sign Directives 2005/32/EC and 2008/28/EC prohibit the sale of mercury vapour lamps starting from 2015.

Luckily, for some time now LEDs have pro-vided an economical alternative lighting solu-tion. LEDS offer enormous flexibility for in-door and outdoor lighting. A long life, low energy consumption, low maintenance costs, easy dimming and resistance to knocks and vibrations are the trademarks of the new lighting systems.

As one of the leading distributors for semi-conductors, passive and electro-mechanical components and embedded solutions, Arrow presents an exemplary LED street lighting system proof of concept. The system for street lighting is based on LEDs from Cree, a luminaire housing from GBS, secondary op-tics from LEDIL, LED drivers (constant power supply with temperature protection) from In-fineon Technologies, and is produced at MAL Effekt (box 1). In terms of energy yield and environmental friendliness, LEDs are state of the art.

Taking a very close look at light yield data

Incorrect values are often stated for luminous efficacy. This is frequently out of ignorance, but sometimes also in order to literally show one’s own products in a better light, according to www.strassenlicht.de. The portal recom-mends examining the light output of the sys-tem as a whole and comes to the conclusion that today’s system light yields of 70 to 100 lumen/watt are the innovative state of devel-opment. Higher values for an LED street light-ing system are currently not economically viable.

How street lighting has to be designed is de-fined in DIN norms, e.g. in DIN EN 13201 Part 1, which regulates the selection of light-ing classes. The lighting situations to be ex-amined for different traffic areas are de-scribed using a parameter system. The basic parameters are the typical speed of the main

user – high, medium, low speed or walking pace – and the types of user within the area under examination, for example motorised vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians. Depending on the combination of the individual basic parameters, this results in a lighting situation, which is described with a letter and a digit. Further parameters, such as the geometrical properties of the traffic area and the prevail-ing weather, are also taken into account and ultimately produce the lighting class. The ex-emplary LED solution from Arrow is accord-ingly assigned to lighting class ME5. Table 2 lists the norms and standards that have to be taken into consideration for street lighting.

The modernisation of street lighting is subsidised

Good news for finance directors: The KfW development bank promotes the modernisa-tion of street lighting with particularly low-interest loans in the programmes KfW!Inves-titionskredit Kommunen Premium – Energie-effiziente Stadtbeleuchtung for municipalities and Kommunal investieren Premium – Ener-gieeffiziente Stadtbeleuchtung for municipal enterprises. The replacement, retrofit and reinstallation of street lighting systems are subsidised. Furthermore, measures for the lighting of parking areas, public open spaces, multi-storey and underground car parks, and traffic lights are financed. It is also possible to receive subsidies for the construction of charging points for electric vehicles in con-nection with lamp posts.

Proof of concept – LED street lighting saves energy and is environment-friendly

It is important to know that LED systems are not only kind to municipal finances, but also to nocturnal animals. LED light is relatively insect-friendly, since the frequency range to which insects’ eyes respond particularly sen-sitively is scarcely produced. Very good re-sults are also achieved with sodium vapour high-pressure lighting, but LED is by far the least likely to attract insects.

Important parameters

Last, but not least, municipal decision-makers also have to keep an eye on the useful life of lighting systems. Here LEDs generally score very high if all the parameters are correct. The barrier layer temperature is a very important variable for LEDs. High-performance LEDs do not emit heat, in contrast to conventional light bulbs. The heat generated is redirected from the barrier layer via the metallic connec-tors to the PCB and to the surroundings. It is not only the service life that depends on the temperature of the barrier layer, but the opti-cal properties, such as colour or light inten-sity, are also affected. Precise knowledge of this variable, which is also referred to as the junction temperature, is of great importance in practice. A widespread, but relatively inex-act method is measurement with a thermal imaging camera. Some suppliers use more precise measuring techniques, which are thus more reliable, to determine the temperature of the barrier layer, while at the same time measuring further key parameters such as light intensity and power consumption.

Colour Measurement

In order to measure colour, the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) also cre-ated the CIE 1931 Chromaticity Diagram (see figure on left) that represents all the colours that the human eye can perceive. The curve that forms the periphery, or edges, of the dia-gram, is called the spectral locus. The spec-tral locus corresponds to the spectral colours in the visible light spectrum and contains the wavelength values.

CIE Chromaticity Diagram Features

The CIE diagram is a two-dimensional chart specifying chromaticity by using X and Y co-ordinates. The CIE Diagram represents colour as seen by the human eye in full daylight. The spectral colours are located on the outside of the horseshoe shape curve (spectral locus). The colours located in other areas are not spectral. For example, the bottom straight line represents a line of purples, while the interior are unsaturated colours: a mixture of a spec-tral colour and a grayscale colour.

LEDs And Saturated Colours

Monochromatic light (consisting of only one wavelength) is, by definition, fully saturated. Single LEDs are essentially monochromatic and, therefore, produce saturated light. How-ever, when multiple LEDs of different colours are combined to get another colour the result is unsaturated light.

Warm, Neutral, and Cool White

Colour temperature can also be associated with white light. White light is called warm, neutral, or cool, depending on its colour tem-perature range. This terminology, however, can be confusing since it is counter-intuitive. The reason being the higher the colour tem-perature, the cooler the light, and the lower the colour temperature, the warmer the light. Cool means the white light appears more blu-ish and warm means the white light appears more reddish.

" Warm: 2700 K – 3700 ºK" Neutral: 3700 K – 5000 ºK " Cool: 5000 K – 10000 ºK

The Binning Issue

The human eye can detect very subtle chang-es in colour, down to ~10 nm for red and 2 to 3 nm for green. For white light LEDs, this sen-sitivity may or may not be an issue depending on the application. For example, in applications such as flashlights and headlamps matching the exact chromaticity of white light is not as critical as that of an application using a string of a dozen or so HB$LED modules to light a wall in an office building. If the LEDs are not matched properly they will produce a kind of rainbow of different shades of white light on wall. This problem does not exist with an in-candescent lamp since it produces a wide range of frequencies. To minimize this poten-tial problem vendors provide binning charts.

Binning Introduction

Binning is the process of methodically sorting and grouping LEDs according to some mea-sured parameter or set of parameters. This allows design engineers to systematically specify an LED and it allows the manufac-turer to order LEDs that function consist-ently in the same way as the specified part. Binning also makes it possible to reorder LEDs that match the original.

Binning Process

Binning diagrams employ geometric regions on the CIE 1931 Diagram arranged along the BBL to specify chromaticity coordinate vari-ation. The BBL in the figure below is the line on which the colour temperatures for white light from sources with a CRI of 100 will lie. The lines labeled 5000K through 10000K are the lines of CCT. Each of the regions, such as WA, WB, and WC, represents two kinds of colour variation. One is the CCT variation (for example, 5000K to 5700K in WH and WJ).

The other variation is called tint, indicating how far the chromaticity coordinates are from the BBL. The top of region WG, for instance, would have a slightly more greenish tint than the bottom. The bottom of WP would have a slightly more purplish tint than the top. WD, in between WG and WP, would have a smaller range of tint. Nevertheless, WG, WD, and WP are all in the same CCT range. Chromaticities that lie directly on the BBL do not have a tint.

Supplier and Customer View of Binning

Chromaticity bins are technically set up as a function of an LED supplier’s production yield. Customers can use them, however, to speci-fy and record parts. Rectangle WE contains the chromaticity coordinates CCy = 0.33, CCx = 0.30. It also contains CCy = 0.32 and CCx = 0.29, and many others that intersect within it. For a given customer application, the light that any LED emits whose chromaticity falls within the region WE, will be considered a match for the light from any other LED whose chromaticity coordinates also fall with-in region WE.

Ambient Light Sensors

Ambient light sensors are used to detect light in a manner similar to the human eye. They can be used in lighting applications where settings need to be adjusted automatically in response to changing ambient light condi-tions. Not only can the sensors be used to turn on and turn off the lights, they can also be used to ramp up the intensity and slowly dim the lights during dusk and dawn. Vishay offers a broad portfolio of ambient light sen-

sors. Part numbers with an F contain an infra-red (IR) filtering epoxy to further improve the ambient light sensing performance. Part numbers with an X01 are qualified to the AEC Q101 automotive standard and support op-erating temperatures from -40!°C to +100!°C. New developments include ambient light sensors with digital interface (I%C) and linear or logarithmic outputs. The sensor resolution is defined with 1!lux, 16-bit and the sensor range spans 1!lux to 65.500!lux.

Applications:" Twilight switch" Dimming control

As the world’s leading supplier of infrared emitters, photo detectors and optical sensors, Vish-ay offers an extraordinarily broad portfolio of opto-electronic products for lighting solutions. Behind these products stands a vertically integrated, opto-electronics company with over 30 years of experience in emitter and detector die fabrication and packaging know-how. www.vishay.com/optoelectronics

Vishay’s all in one intelligent switch solution for lights – the VCNL4' family – is the indus-try’ first optical sensor to offer proximity and ambient light sensing with 16-bit resolution and an I2C interface with data rates up to 3!Mbit/s. It has the industry‘s best range of up to 20!cm. It can be easily extended with an external IR emitter up to 1!m. The proxim-ity sensor will work well in all lighting condi-tions, and with any transparent cover, even with a dirty, scratched or poor IR transparent

window. The VCNL4' series operates by cal-culating the offset noise created by the cover and subtracting it from the actual counts. This makes it highly optimised for turning on, turn-ing off, or adjusting lighting features. The am-bient light sensors can in addition conserve electrical power or provide extra safety while eliminating the need for manual adjustments. The sensors can detect presence of a human hand or any other object. It even works with a gloved hand. A demo kit is available featuring

a VCNL4000 sensor mounted on a PCB with a USB interface and demonstration software. The kit allows designers to easily and inex-pensively evaluate the device for their appli-cations.

Lenses and OpticsOptics are the elements that shape and direct the light generated by the LED. Optics can be defined as devices used to control light output so that it is a usable source. There are three basic categories of LED optics:

Primary optics are usually part of the LED package - lenses integrated into LED pack-ages, especially SMT and power packages, can cause the luminous flux from the LED to adopt a specific radiation pattern.

Generally referred to as secondary optics, lenses and reflectors are mechanically po-sitioned on top of the LED for the desired lighting result. The field of tertiary optics encompasses numerous types of application.

The FL7730 is a dimmable high power factor flyback controller IC using primary-side reg-ulation of the output current and voltage (the FL7732 is an equivalent device for non-dim-ming applications). LED driver solutions based on FL773' series do not require an input electrolytic capacitor, thereby saving significant cost and space. The constant cur-rent accuracy at a system level is within 5!%. The solution is dimmable with standard TRIAC dimmers. The power factor (PF) exceeds 90!%, while the total harmonic distortion (THD) meets Class C requirements.

The FL7701 is a high PFC buck controller IC. Non-isolated LED driver solutions built around it do not require electrolytic capaci-tors either on the input or on the output, nor do they require a transformer. No separate Vdd supply is needed for the IC, removing the need for an electrolytic Vdd capacitor. The required inductor size is very small. An ana-logue dimming input is provided.

For higher power, Fairchild’s single-stage PFC flyback solution covers 20!W ~ 50!W applications. It is built around the FL6961 PFC controller IC and provides high efficien-cy by offering high PF and low THD perfor-mance without adding components, thus low-ering the bill of materials (BoM) count. Additionally, no bulk capacitor is needed, which further extends the system lifetime. For power levels up to 100!W, the same PFC con-troller is used with the FL6300 quasi-reso-nant controller in a classical PFC and flyback configuration.

For power levels up to 400!W, the FLS series LLC half-bridge is an integrated solution with three chips contained within one package. The solution features internal MOSFETs with fast recovery body diode and high side gate driver included.

FL7730 key features include:" Compatible with traditional TRIAC

control - no need to change existing lamp infrastructure" Compatible with non-dimming

lamp designs" Cost-effective solution without Input

bulk capacitor & feedback circuitry" PFC function" Accurate constant-current (CC) control,

independent online voltage, output volt-age, magnetising inductance variation" Line voltage compensation for CC control" Linear frequency control for better

efficiency & simple design" Open-LED protection" Short-LED protection" Cycle-by-cycle current limiting" Over-temperature protection with

auto restart" Low start up current: 20!µA" Low operating current: 5!mA" Frequency hopping for better

EMI performance" SOP$8 package available" Application voltage range:

80!VAC ~ 308!VAC

Applications:" Solid state lighting systems" General illumination" Incandescent lamp replacements" Signage " Backlighting

International Rectifier is a world leader in power management technology. The company lever-ages its expertise in power conversion technologies to deliver efficient, easy to use solutions for LED lighting. www.irf.com/product-info/lighting/ledmain.html

In the rapidly growing solid state lighting sec-tor, there is a need for low cost driver elec-tronics to supply constant current output to high brightness, high power LEDs. The IRS2980 LEDrivIR™ IC offers improved per-formance at a lower system cost than alter-native solutions for non-isolated LED driver applications. Rated at 600 V, the IRS2980 is the first in a family of high voltage LEDrivIR™ ICs. It utilises International Rectifier’s propri-etary control and high voltage technologies to realise a simple, high performance buck LED driver solution. The IRS2980S uses a unique floating high side differential current

sense and level shift scheme allowing hys-teretic operation with a low side switching MOSFET optimising both size and cost. In addition, it includes a high voltage regulator able to operate up to 450!V, eliminating the need for an external VCC supply. A PWM dimming interface is also included that can be controlled from a 0!V to 2!V analogue or 3.3!V or 5!V logic control signal able to oper-ate up to 1 kHz, offering brightness control from 0 to 100!%. An integrated PWM oscil-lator is used for DC dimming control. The IRS2980 is used in non-isolated buck LED drivers. Due to its hysteretic average current control method the design procedure is greatly simplified and current regulation is inherently stable under all line and load con-ditions including short circuit. The IRS2980 based driver has a very low component count and may be used off line, in battery powered DC applications or as a back end regulating stage in a multi-stage system. In AC systems a power factor (PF) of 0.9 can be reached using a simple passive circuit based on ca-pacitors and diodes only. LED loads may be disconnected and re-connected while the converter is running without damage to the converter.

Key features include:" Hysteretic current regulation" Analogue/PWM dimming input" PWM dimming interface allowing for 0!%

to 100!% brightness control" Hysteretic average current mode control

for precise current regulation" Internal high voltage regulator" Internal 15.6!V Zener clamp diode on VCC

" Micropower start up (250!)A)" Latch immunity & ESD protection

Applications:" LED incandescent replacement lamps" CFL replacement lamps" LED driver modules

IRPLLED7 Reference Design Kit

The IRPLLED7 reference design kit and IR-PLLED13 evaluation board illustrate the full functionality of the IRS2980 device. The reference design kit can operate from 70!VAC input up to 240!VAC output to pro-vide a regulated 350!mA output. Operation is optimised for 120!VAC. It includes a poten-tiometer for self dimming and a passive val-ley fill circuit that provides the 0.9!PF. The evaluation board delivers an LED output voltage that can be up to 90!% of the input voltage, operating from an AC line input volt-age between 90 !VAC and 250 !VAC at 50/60!Hz. The board does not provide gal-vanic isolation of the LED drive output from the line input. Therefore, if the system is sup-plied directly from a non-isolated input, an electrical shock hazard exists at the LED outputs and these should not be touched during operation. It is recommended that for laboratory evaluation these boards be used with an isolated AC or DC input supply.

100VIN, 100VOUT LED Controller

The LT®3756, LT3756-1 and LT3756-2 are DC/DC control-lers designed to operate as a constant-current source for driving high current LEDs. They drive a low side external N-channel power MOSFET from an internal regulated 7.15V supply. The fixed frequency, current-mode architecture results in stable operation over a wide range of supply and output voltages. A ground referenced voltage FB pin serves as the input for several LED protection features, and also makes it possible for the converter to operate as a constant-voltage source. A frequency adjust pin allows the user to program the frequency from 100kHz to 1MHz to optimize efficiency, performance or external component size.

The LT3756/LT3756-1/LT3756-2 sense output current at the high side of the LED string. High side current sensing is the most flexible scheme for driving LEDs, allowing boost, buck mode or buck-boost mode configuration. The PWM input provides LED dimming ratios of up to 3000:1, and the CTRL input provides additional analog dimming capability.

80VIN, 80VOUT Constant-Current,

Constant-Voltage Converter

The LT®3956 is a DC/DC converter designed to operate as a constant-current source and constant-voltage regulator. It is ideally suited for driving high current LEDs. It features an internal low side N-channel power MOSFET rated for 84V at 3.3A and driven from an internal regulated 7.15V supply.

The LT3956 senses output current at the high side of the LED string. High side current sensing is the most flexible scheme for driving LEDs, allowing boost, buck mode or buck-boost mode configuration. The PWM input provides LED dimming ratios of up to 3000:1, and the CTRL input provides additional analog dimming capability.

NCL30000 TRIAC Dimmable LED Driver

NCL30100 Driver Controller IC

The NCL30000 is a switch mode power sup-ply controller IC intended for low to medium power single stage power factor (PF) cor-rected isolated flyback LED drivers. It em-ploys a critical conduction mode (CrM) control technique to ensure near unity power factor across a wide range of input voltages and output power levels.

Key features include:" Constant on-time PWM control" Cycle-by-cycle current protection" Low current sense threshold of 500!mV" Reference design for TRIAC line dimmers

The NCL30100 is a compact switching reg-ulator controller IC intended for space con-strained constant current high brightness LED driver applications where high efficiency and small size are important. The controller IC is based on a peak current, quasi fixed off time control architecture optimised for con-tinuous conduction mode step-down (buck) operation. In this configuration, a reverse buck topology is used to control a cost-effec-tive N-channel MOSFET.

Key features include:" Quasi-fixed off time, peak current control

method

The NCL30105 is a peak current controlled fixed off time buck controller IC designed for LED driver applications. It is optimised to op-erate in deep continuous conduction mode eliminating the need for output electrolytic capacitors. Featuring an adjustable off time generator, the controller can drive a MOSFET up to a switching frequency of 500!kHz. A dedicated dimming pin enables the use of a pulse width modulated logic signal to dim the LED directly. PFC Offline Buck LED Driver

The NCL30002 is a switch mode power sup-ply controller IC intended for low to medium power single stage PFC LED drivers. The device operates as a CrM buck controller to regulate LED current at a high PF for a spe-cific line voltage range. The current limit threshold is tightly trimmed allowing open loop control techniques to reduce parts count while maintaining accurate current regulation. CrM operation is particularly suited for LED applications as very high efficiency can be achieved even at low power levels. These are important in LED lighting to comply with reg-ulatory requirements and meet overall system luminous efficacy requirements. In CrM, the switching frequency will vary with line and load. Switching losses are as low as recovery losses in the output rectifier are negligible since the current goes to zero prior to reacti-vating the main MOSFET switch.

Tailored Solutions for DC!DC LED Driving

LED2000/1

The LED2000/1 from STMicroelectronics are two monolithic buck switching regulators designed to operate as accurate constant current (CC) sources. They allow the designing of current-mode fixed-frequency buck switching regulators operating with an input voltage range from 3.5!V to 18!V, providing an output current up to 3!A (for the LED2000) or 4!A (for the LED2001)with accurate regulation. For optimised system performance, these devices embed synchronous rectification, with an internal low-side MOSFET with high performance RDS_ON. It is driven out of phase to the main switch, thus reducing the losses n o r m a l l y g e n e ra te d by t h e ex te r n a l free-wheeling diode. This, along with an internal compensation mechanism, enables the external component count to be minimised. The maximum current is set by an external resistor through a very low feedback voltage (100!mV), thus minimising the power losses on the sensing resistor. The embedded pulse width modulated (PWM) dimming circuitry features LED brightness control.

LED5000

The LED5000 is a monolithic buck switching regulator specifically designed to drive long LED strings as it can operate with an input voltage range from 5.5!V to 48!V, providing an output current up to 3!A. It embeds both PWM circuitry for LED brightness control and a disable function (inhibit pin) for zero current consumption. A very low feedback voltage (200!mV) minimises power losses on the sensing resistor. Compensation is external, in order to make it easier to implement other topologies, such as buck-boost or floating boost, for driving of an even higher number of LEDs. Like the LED2000/1, the LED5000 works with a high switching frequency (850 !kHz) which, combined with low impedance ceramic capacitors, helps to minimise the output ripple and to reduce the total cost of external power components. These devices are protected against thermal overheating, over-current and output short circuit. Soft-start is also implemented and disabled during dimming in order to maximise the dimming performance.

Key features include:" Wide input voltage range: 3.5!V to 18!V" Needs low number external components" High output current: 3!A (LED2000), 4!A

(LED2001)" Low feedback voltage 100 mV

HVLED Family - Retrofit of Incandescent Lamps

Due to the recent banning of incandescent lamps inside the European Community (EC), alternative lighting sources are becoming more and more popular in domestic and commercial usage. Among them, solutions using LED lamps offer the highest efficiency and room for further development. For fixed lighting, the main trend is in the direction of high efficiency isolated solutions with high power factor (PF). The HVLED family consists of high voltage primary switchers intended for direct operation from the rectified mains. These devices need minimal external components, providing an efficient, compact and cost-effective solution for LED driving. To compliment the first member of the family, the HVLED805, the new HVLED807PF and HVLED15PF devices extend the power range from 5!W to 7!W and 15!W, respectively, as well as providing PF correction. All the HVLED devices combine a high performance, low-voltage PWM controller chip and an 800!V, avalanche-rugged power MOSFET

housed in a SO16$Narrow package format. Each device includes a high voltage start up circuit so that it is able to power itself directly from the rectified mains. The PWM is specifically designed for quasi-resonant flyback LED drivers, with CC regulation using primary sensing feedback. Due to the high powerMOS breakdown voltage, the flyback converter can operate with higher reflected voltage ensuring the zero voltage switching (ZVS) condition across almost the entire operating range, with clear benefits to overall efficiency. In addition to this soft-switching, the variable frequency control reduces electro-magnetic interference (EMI) emissions. The patented primary current control method eliminates the need for an optocoupler, for the secondary voltage reference and for the current sense on the secondary side, maintaining strong LED current accuracy (5!%), independently of the mains voltage.

Key features include:" Power output up to 15!W" PF correction " Compact package" PWM functionality

LED Array Drivers – Single Chip Solution for LED Control

The new LED array driver family from STMicroelectronics fully integrates all functions required to drive high brightness LEDs. These devices allow CC control of more channels in a single chip solution. The external parts are reduced to only one resistor which sets the preferred maximum current for all outputs. The devices cover different number of channels (4 to 24) and current range (5!mA to 400!mA per channel) options, as well as having different features such as error detection (ED) and auto power-saving functionality (AS). The family offers a wide portfolio, from simple and economical solutions (such as the STP16CPC26) to more advanced solutions (such as the STP$16DPPS05, which has both ED and AS), to RGB solutions (STP24DP05). All the

devices embed thermal shutdown and are available in a wide range of packages (DIP, SO, SSOP/TSSOP, QFN, TQFP, TSSOP exposed pad). The AS functionality is specially developed to reduce total power consumed by LED drivers not actively driving any output in real-time (ST patent). Auto power shutdown and power-on features allow power savings without any external intervention, making the devices highly suited to supporting all worldwide energy efficiency programs. The ED mode can be remotely controlled using specific digital keys through the devices SPI port. Fault data is shifted out of the device via the same SPI with no additional pin. This reduces system downtime by alerting maintenance crews of faulty LEDs.

LM3466 LED Driver

Smart Linear LED Driver for Multi-Channel LED Systems

The LM3466 is a highly integrated linear LED driver that simplifies the design of high power, wide area lighting fixtures such as streetlights. It equalises the current provided by the supply in a pre-set ratio for each active LED string, where an active string is a fully turned on LED string, regardless of the number of strings con-nected to the supply or the forward voltage of each LED string. If any LED string opens during operation, the LM3466 automatically equal-ises the supply current through all of the re-maining active LED strings. As a result, the overall brightness of the lighting system is maintained even if some LED strings open dur-ing operation. The LM3466 lighting system is simple to design owing to a proprietary control scheme. To minimise the component count, the device integrates a 70 V, 1.5 A N-channel pow-er MOSFET with a current limit of 2.06!A. In order to allow one more LED string to be add-ed to the system, only a single resistor, a ca-pacitor and a LM3466 are required. Other su-pervisory features of this device include under-voltage lock-out, fault reporting, thermal latch off, and thermal shutdown protection. The LM3466 is available in a PSOP$8 exposed DAP package. Linear circuitry safeguards against any EMI and ensures compliance with the EN 55015 standard or other regional reg-ulatory requirements.

LEDs are usually driven by current drivers, but there are applications on the market which need constant voltage instead of constant current. Due to legal requirements, constant voltage LED drivers must meet specific pa-rameters. Power factor correction (PFC) > 0.9 is already mandatory at power levels starting from 25!W and EN61000$2$3 class C compliance is now required (which is not typical for standard constant voltage sup-plies). The RACV and RACD series of 3!W, 6!W, 12!W, 20!W, 30!W and 60!W constant voltage driver modules are isolated and meet UL and EN standards.

Key features include:" Universal input voltage" 5 year warranty" High efficiency: > 85!%" Constant voltage outputs" Power factor corrected" RoHS & REACH compliant" EN 61000$3$2 (Class C)" UL 8750 listed

Applications:" Cabinet lighting" High/low bay lighting" Wall washers" Cove lighting" Signage" Backlight for signals" Road signs" Commercial signs

Interconnect and PassivesConnectors are used to create separable electromechanical interfaces and basically comprise a housing and some contacts. Used for power and/or signal transmission between elements of the luminaires, typical connectors in lighting systems include holders for LEDs and board-to-board, wire-to-board and wire-to-wire connections within the module and between the module and the outside world. Connectors also provide the necessary and often innovative final connection of the luminaires to the power source. Some of the main dedicated components for lighting include devices to(protect the LEDs and components such as capacitors, inductive components, trimmers, potentiometers and batteries needed for the electronic circuits that drive the LEDs.

LSP Series

Bourns® LSP series of electronic shunt pro-tector devices provide a current bypass when an LED element in an LED series string fails open circuit. This ensures the remaining string of LEDs will continue to function. There are many cases where high reliability of the LED lighting must be maintained, such as LCD backlighting, transport, avionics, intrinsically safe and low maintenance lighting.

LSP Series LED Shunt Protector

The SMAJxxCA series of transient voltage suppressor (TVS) devices can provide voltage signal clamping and protection against elec-trostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast tran-sients (EFT) and surge transients applied within the circuitry. The SRU1048 series of-fers high-current handling and low DC resist-ance in a compact form factor. The CRA2512 series are current sense resistors in standard 2512 chip sizes with a high power density (3!W) and low TCR (75!ppm). The surface tem-perature of the resistor is lower than similar parts of the same size from other manufactur-ers, typically reaching 48!˚C under a load of 1!W. The PWR263S$20 series are surface mount resistors in D2PAK casings with very low inductance and high power ratings. They can be used with linear current regulators to limit the current especially in high luminosity LEDs which consume a high level of current. In addition, these resistors do not exhibit high surface temperatures which is a requirement in many designs. The MF$MSMF075 Multi-fuse® polymer PTC resettable fuses provide over-current and overtemperature protection.

Based in Winterbach, Germany, JST Deutschland GmbH has an extensive portfolio of connector solutions for the LED lighting industry. The company complies fully with DIN EN ISO 9001 and ISO!TS!16949 standards. www.jst.de

JST Deutschland GmbH presents four prod-uct series which are targeted specifically at LED applications. Due to their miniaturised design, these connectors can be used when there is only limited space on the PCB and are capable of withstanding current loads of up to 4!A (AWG 22 SFH). They are available for wire-to-board and board-to-board connec-tion options. The LEB series can be used as both, thereby offering a broad combination of design possibilities.

LEA Wire-to-Board Connector

The LEA wire-to-board connector has a side entry header SMT mechanism for preventing wrong insertion, plus a secure locking mech-anism.

Key features include:" Pitch: 1.8 mm" Current rating: 3!A!AC, DC (AWG 22)" Voltage rating: 300!V!AC, DC" Applicable wire: AWG!30 to AWG!22" Circuit: 2" Height: 3.0!mm

LEL Board-to-Board Connector

High brightness LEDs are now being used in many different lighting applications such as street lights, tunnel lights, interior commercial lighting, retrofit lamps, outdoor displays, traf-fic signals and car headlights. In addition to the LED emitters, solid state lighting fixtures also include power conversion electronics (AC/DC), driver electronics, a heat sink for thermal management and optics to optimise light quality. The typical building blocks of such an LED based lamp, including the rec-ommended circuit protection products from Littelfuse, are shown in the following diagram.

Littelfuse develops industry-leading circuit protection solutions by working closely with its customers and standardization agencies. The company’s solutions can be found in virtually any product requiring electrical energy, including lighting systems. www.littelfuse.com/led-protectors.html

Equipment that is directly connected to AC mains (e.g. 120/250!VAC) can be damaged by short circuit and overload conditions caused by component and/or circuit failures inside the bulb/lamp. In addition, lightning surges or load switching transients can create voltage spikes or ring waves that can stress and ultimately damage components. Given that the value proposition for LED bulbs/lamps is not only lower energy usage, but longer lifetimes, it will be crucial that transient voltage protection is taken into account so as to eliminate field failures driven by the electri-cal environment.

A common protection scheme prevalent in most LED lighting circuits consists of a cur-

rent limiting fuse at the AC mains supply in series with the load in addition to a metal ox-ide varistor in parallel for surge energy han-dling. Depending primarily on the location of the LED lamp or fixture, either outdoors or indoors, different standards for surge immu-nity will apply. Energy Star, IEEE C62.41-2002, IEC61547, IEC61000$4$5 are all such examples and consist of specific surge waveforms and number of strikes to be tested. Following the rectification and power factor correction (PFC) part, a transient voltage sup-pression (TVS) diode can offer a fast-acting and highly reliable surge protection solution on the DC side in a typical LED driver supply. The last stage in the scheme is a protection

element to safeguard the LED strings in the event that one of the LEDs in the series string is damaged by electro-static discharge (ESD) or a surge event, the other LEDs will continue to operate. This is particularly important for high reliability applications such as safety lights, outdoor parking and street lights. A specific LED protection element offering surge protection as well as bridging function-ality is prevalent in the Littelfuse PLED LED protector series. Littelfuse is committed to helping the LED lighting manufacturers meet or exceed these specifications by providing robust coordinated over-current and over-voltage protection solutions for all surge levels.

NOTE: MOVs were tested with 1.2'50us open circuit voltage waveform and 8'20us short circuit current waveform forming a combo waveform with 2ohm source impedance. Standard method was used for testing the MOVs per datasheet specifications which consisted of driving 10kA through the part with the generated combination wave. Peak voltage was adjusted to a bit higher than 20kV in order to drive exactly 10kA of peak cur-rent. In real world events, actual peak current through the luminaire with typical circuit impedance path will likely be lower. Littelfuse has tested the above part selections to a more stringent level as it complies with our in-ternal testing standards. The TVS diodes and PLED options were not tested due to the custom nature of each commercial lighting design.

AC Mains LED Lighting ProtectionMetal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are typically used for transient overvoltage suppression in AC line voltage applications. Lightning, in-ductive load switching, or capacitor bank switching may cause transient overvoltage conditions. In these applications, there also exists the potential for a sustained abnormal overvoltage/limited current condition that may cause the MOV to go into thermal runa-way, resulting in overheating, outgassing and possibly fire. New thermally enhanced MOVs help protect a wide variety of low-power sys-tems against damage caused by overcurrent, overtemperature and overvoltage faults, in-cluding lightning strikes, electrostatic dis-charge (ESD) surges, loss of neutral, incorrect input voltage and power induction.

Thermal ManagementIn terms of solid state lighting, thermal management is the process of controlling and diverting heat from the LED package. LEDs require current to pass through them in order to maintain a consistent level of illumination. This also means that the temperature of the device must be controlled, since current flow generates heat that could nega-tively affect the light output and the lifetime of the LED if not properly managed. There are three basic categories of thermal management products:

" Primary - MCPCB (Metal Core PCB using thermal compound) or copper-based PCB " Secondary - Heatsink or other material that directly attaches to the LED or PCB " Tertiary - Forced air or other heat dispersal method

A heatsink is a device (usually made of metal) that absorbs and dissipates heat from another device (in this case a power LED). Heatsinks are available in a wide variety of sizes and forms.
