6 7ABOUT CHILE

Chile has a population of more than 18 million people. The largest cities in Chile are: Santiago, Concepción, Valparaíso, Temuco, Puerto Montt and Antofagasta.

Due to Chile’s geography, it has a large range of climates. In the north, the climate is dry and warm. The Atacama Desert is the most arid desert and annually receives less rain than anywhere else in the world. The middle of the country has a temperate climate with well-defined seasons and in the south the weather is rainy and can get pretty cold.

Santiago is Chile s capital and the largest city in the country with a population of more than 6 million people.

The city is bordered by the Andes Mountains to the east, which make the city very unique and beautiful. Santiago is about an hour away from ski centers and about one hour and a half from coastal cities Valparaíso and Viña del Mar.

Some parks include Parque Forestal in Downtown Santiago, Parque Bicentenario in Vitacura, and Parque Araucano in Las Condes. Additionally, from the top of an inner city hill called Cerro San Cristobal, you can see the entirety of the city; you can climb it on foot, bicycle, or pay for a lift on something we call the Funicular.

Popular neighborhoods: Bellavista (thriving nightlife), Barrio Lastarria, Providencia, Brasil, Yungay, Barrio Italia, and Patronato.

There are also many interesting museums such as Museo de Bellas Artes, Casa Museo La Chascona, Museo de Artes Visuales, Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral and the Presidential Palace (Palacio de La Moneda).

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Santiago is a generally safe city and thus walking after dark is usually not a problem in most areas, however take the same precautions with your belongings that you would in any other metropolitan city. Additionally, there are several areas where additional precautions should be taken at night (Santiago Centro, Bellavista, anywhere in Western Santiago)

BIP! CARD: (The public transportation card)It is absolutely necessary to use the rechargeable card called tarjeta Bip! (Pronounced “beep”). With this card you can use the public transport (buses and metro) with ease. You will be given a charged card upon arrival. Please not that if you need to recharge the card you may only do so with cash at the metro station.

URBAN BUSES:The bus system is called TRANSANTIAGO, although in March 2019 the name was changed to RED. We recommend that you visit the Transantiago/RED website (www.Red.cl) in order to plan your route beforehand. We also recommend downloading the app.

BUS CHECKER. These will help you know the fastest way to reach your destination. The bus costs no more than $800 chilean pesos per route. You will not be charged extra is you use more than one bus to reach your destination.

METRO (SUBWAY):Santiago’s Metro is the most efficient and fast way to go around the city. It is clean, cheap, frequent and safe. But it is often overcrowded at peak hours. The cost of a peak hour trip on the metro is $ 800 per ride, which is charged from your Bip! card when you enter the metro and swipe the card.

The metro system has 7 lines. Line 1 (the red one) is the main line of the Metro system and it runs underSantiago’s main avenue that travels west to east.

The Metro operates from 6:00 to 23:00 hrs Monday through Saturday and 8:30 to 22:30 hours on Sundays and national holidays. More info at www.metro.cl.

Switching between lines has zero cost, and changing from Metro to bus, bus to bus or bus to Metro has usually zero cost as well. For the cost of one ride, you can take up to 2 different transportation options within a 2 hour time period.

TAXIS:

Taxis are available at all times in Santiago and they are everywhere. The taxis here are black with a yellow roof. The taximeter shows the cost of the trip and we recommended that you ask previously for an approximation of the trip cost to the desired destination. Late night fares are normally twice those during the day. It is not customary to tip taxi drivers in Chile.

Taxi Companies (24/7):

Apps: Saffertaxi, Easytaxi, Cabify or UBER.

a) 131 - Ambulance Urgency Service (24 hours)

b) 132 - Firefighters

c) 133 - Police

There is also a mobile app called SoSafe which is a system that allows you to send emergency alerts and communicate them directly to police or the guards of that specific commune. This way you can solicit help in emergency situations (e.g. theft, assault, health problems, among others).

To get to Universidad de los Andes there are two options:

- Metro + Bus (Transantiago): travel by metro (Line 1 “Red Line”) to Los Dominicos Subway station and then take the urban bus C02c or C02 (Transantiago) to the university. These specific buses (C02c and C02) are red.

- Metro + Taxi or Colectivo: travel by metro (Line 1 “Red Line”) to Los Dominicos Subway station and then take any taxi to the university.

STAY CONNECTED

- PHONE CALLS

The country code for Chile is 56, the city code for Santiago is 2. The telephone numbers are usually 8 digits. After arrival in the country, the use of the country code is not required.

- PHONE CARDS, CHIPS

Due to new regulations, Chilean phone companies require all IMEI s to be registered in order to use local sim cards. Since the program has a short duration, it may not be possible to complete all the necessary steps in order to register your phone s IMEI. Some students have been able to buy a sim card without a problem, but we cannot guarantee that your phone will be compatible with the system. We recommend purchasing an international mobile plan before arriving to Chile.

- WIFI ACCESS

At UANDES you will have unlimited access to wifi.

Username: ALUMNOS

Password: uandes2200

- WHATSAPP

The App Whatsapp is the most common form of communication in Chile. This free app allows it s users to text and communicate with ease. Please download the app as it will be the main source of communication with everyone who is participating in the program!

In Chile you can usually pay with credit, debit and cash. However many small businesses only accept cash, especially outside of Greater Santiago. The bills available are the $1.000, $2.000, $5.000, $10.000 and $20.000 pesos bills. Normally, no store or business will accept foreign currency.

ATMs are easy to find in Chile, however will charge a fee of $3.000 to $6.000 (US $5-10) every time you withdraw cash from an account of a foreign bank. ATMs are accessible 24 hours at all banks. Many pharmacies, supermarkets and gas stations also have ATMs, however without 24 hour access.

This symbol signifies an ATM:

US$ 1= approximately $670 Chilean pesos

In addition to paying with bills you can also pay with coins. There are six different coins in Chile worth $10, $50, $100 and $500 pesos.

If you pay in cash a new regulation has been put in place called ‘rounding’. The one and 5 cent pesos are no longer used.
