Imagine this…
You are on your own, in a city, and you have a bit of spare
time, you want to take a tour of the place but the bus costs
£17.50!! Rip off! You decide to just walk yourself but your
not too sure where to go, so you ask for advice from your
friend, and she tells you to download the AroundTheCity
app, as it will give you guided audio tours of the city at a
very small cost. After downloading and using the app, you
recommend it to everyone because it was very useful and
enjoyable.
Core Question to be addressed
How can I have an enjoyable tour of the city
without paying too much money?
Key Insight
People who visit cities and want to know more about
them currently try to use bus tours or guided tours,
but this solution does not work because they cost too
much and are often not as informative as possible.
Our key insight is that people get that tour that they
want, inexpensively and easily.
Mini Elevator Pitch
Our app idea is called AroundTheCity and it is a portable audio tour guide.
It would offer you a range of different audio tours for worldwide cities. It
will tell you about tourist attractions and many different interesting things as
you walk at your own pace. It would stop you from spending a fortune on
personal tour guides. First of all, you will be given free tour guides of
London and Paris . You can then download additional tour guides for most
major cities for just 89p. The tour would include virtual maps and
checkpoints to make sure you are going the right way. Our target market
would be from teenagers onwards. It would be a fun app and most ages
would have a reason to use it. Most people could use it for fun and tourists
could use it as cheaper option to most bus tours.
User Profiles
This is one of our user profiles.
The main thing that people were
trying to get at in our user
profiles were that they wanted a
variety of different tours and the
tours should be detailed, and
easy to use. Most said that they
would be willing to pay about
99p for a tour because this
would be a small price
compared with how much some
guided tours cost.
Are any other apps similar?
There are already some apps on the market that do
address our problem however they are not specific
enough and do not give the information that people
need. The layout and quality of them is not
professional and the quality of the apps is much lower
than what we would expect to make.
Features
Our app will include GPS for monitoring where the user is so relevant information can be transmitted to the app and received by the user. It won’t use as much mobile data as other apps or drain your battery and will also not put any virus’ or bugs on your device.
It will use the audio functions to enable the user to get the best possible experience from our audio guide. It will have HD graphics and it will have a modern design.
MVP User Stories
Here are some MVP user stories-
As a user I would like to take tours around the city without paying a fortune.
As a user I would like to be guided around the city and be shown a few places and learn something new.
As a user I would like a guided, relaxing tour around the city without being bored by too much information.
As a user I would like to be shown all of the main attractions around the city so that I can take images.
As a user I would like to be able to take a break from my bus life and learn a bit about the places I travel to without it taking too long.
Our flow
We have had good feedback from the flow, and
although it is not our final design or anything, it simply
shows the basic functions of our app.
(You can find the wireframe of our app on slideshare)
Feasibility
We think our app will be feasible as the main
features we need are: Google maps and GPS. We
will also need to use an automated voice to narrate
the tour. HD images and graphics will be used
throughout the app.
Business Care and customer pledges
Some of the customers pay, but not all. It is optional
but when the customer decides to pay for something,
they get extra choices, e.g. cities, for their app. When
you first download the app, you will have a total of 2
cities, then if they want to, they can buy and unlock
more.
Marketing Ideas
To make our app more popular and ‘out there’, we have decided for every 500 downloads our app gets, we will choose one person at random and unlock an extra city for them of their choice.
We have decided to advertise our app on social media sites such as Facebook, twitter, instagram etc. Another idea we came up with is to advertise it on YouTube and in public places or on billboards/notice boards outside where the public pass by often.
Experience
We have created Wire Frames to show the flow of our app. We also have pitched our idea to our form and to the expert, who gave us positive feedback. He also gave us the idea of including a walking tour, maps, and information on hotels and restaurants/cafes. Out of the three apps we pitched to the expert, he told us that he personally thinks AroundTheCity would become the most popular as it is a combination of many apps but in one, he said that this would appeal to a wide target market. We believe that the talk with the expert really boosted up our ideas for the app.
