Trooper Tips (C.R.S.) refers to this as a simple lane change. C.R.S. 42-4-1007(1) (a) states “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety”. In other words, make sure the area that you want to travel into is safe and clear of traffic before, and maintain your lane position before attempting the movement. Several people have asked about merging onto Interstate 76 from different areas in the county. One particular area in question is the junction of Highway 6, Highway 34 and Interstate 76 eastbound from Wiggins. This one is tricky! Vehicles traveling on Highway 6 out of Wiggins, needs to yield to traffic on Highway 34. Once this is accomplished, this traffic needs to then yield to vehicles on Interstate 76. Vehicles traveling on the roadway that is not merging have the right-of-way, so Highway 34 traffic has the right-of-way from Highway 6 travelers, and Interstate 76 traffic has the right-of-way from the Highway 34 travelers. Common courtesy does comes into play when traffic is met for the merge sequence, so if possible, move over to the next lane to allow more room for other vehicles to Interstate 76 (I- 76) has entrance/ on ramps that are examples of the same type of maneuver.
