James D. Rosenthal lectures and writes on current affairs, traveling extensively and drawing on more than 30 years’ experience as a veteran Foreign Service officer and former U.S. Ambassador. He represented the U.S. State Department in Africa and Southeast Asia, served on the U.S. delegation to the Vietnam peace talks in Paris, and was U.S. Ambassador to the West African nation of Guinea. In addition to his diplomatic duties, he taught political science and international relations at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

David Keeling is head of Western Kentucky University’s (WKU) Department of Geography and Geology. Professor Keeling’s research interests include the geography of exploration and discovery, resource use, regional cultures, and development in emerging economies. An active member and Councilor of the American Geographical Society (AGS), he served as a Study Tour Leader on several AGS expeditions, including around the world expeditions in 2004 and 2009. He was born in England and lived in Australia for 12 years.

Larry Goedde is Professor of Art History at the University of Virginia where he has taught since 1981 and served for 15 years as Chair of the McIntire Department of Art. He has lectured and written extensively on the topics of seascape, landscape and still life, with publications including his book Tempest and Shipwreck in Dutch and Flemish Art: Convention, Rhetoric and Interpretation and various exhibition catalogues and essays. He has led trips to Holland and Belgium, the Danube River, and a cruise on the Mediterranean from Rome to Lisbon. Professor Goedde will join the expedition from Cambodia to Florida.

October 28–November 18, 2011: Gail Cornell and James Karr

Gail Cornell is an architectural historian and speaker who has lectured extensively on educational trips around the world over the last 15 years. From North Africa to India, from South America to Easter Island, Gail has traveled the world researching master architects, historic architecture, ancient and modern city planning, and issues in historic preservation. A graduate of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, and a member of the Society of Architectural Historians, Gail is a popular Smithsonian Journeys Study Leader.

James R. Karr specializes in tropical ecology, birds, conservation biology, and environmental policy, and has done extensive field work in Central and South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and New Guinea. In the 1980s he developed a biologically-based way to evaluate the quality of water resources, called the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI), which is a tool now used all over the world. Dr. Karr has a B.Sc. from Iowa State University and M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He has also taught at Purdue, University of Illinois, and Virginia Tech, and is the author of more than 300 scientific papers and monographs.

Day 2. Fly to Lima, once a thriving capital in Spain’s New World empire. Arrive in the evening, and enjoy a fine dinner of traditional Peruvian cuisine. Miraflores Park Hotel, Lima

Days 3 & 4. We take a local flight to Cusco, center of the Andean world for centuries. See the historic district where Spanish Baroque palaces, a beautiful cathedral, and the grand Plaza de Armas were built directly on foundations laid by the Incas. Marvel at the treasures of the Pre-Colombian Art Museum, where we will meet with master Andean weaver Nilda Callañaupa, who works with traditional weavers throughout Peru to preserve the rich textile arts of this country.

The next day, travel on the luxurious Hiram Bingham train through the spectacularly scenic Urubamba Valley to Machu Picchu. This sacred citadel was abandoned by the Incas, reclaimed by the jungle, and lost to history until it was rediscovered by the explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Alternate: Instead of visiting Cusco and Machu Picchu, head to Northern Peru, to visit the temples of Chiclayo and Trujillo, where the richest burial chambers ever found in the Americas were discovered. See where the ancient Moche and Chimu peoples lived, including Chan Chan, the largest adobe city in the world. Visit Huaca de la Luna and learn more about this extraordinary site at the National University of Trujillo Archeological Museum. Easter Island Enduring Mysteries of the Moai

Days 5 & 6. Fly more than 2,300 miles westward across the Pacific Ocean to Easter Island. Scattered with mysterious, colossal stone statues called moai, the island is an open-air museum of the ruins of a lost culture. Since the island was first seen by Europeans on Easter Sunday in 1722, it has been the subject of debate. How did its native people first arrive? What transpired over the centuries? What do the tall, brooding statues mean? Explore many parts of this island—a UNESCO World Heritage site—with renowned archaeologists Claudio Cristino, Edmundo Edwards, and Patricia Vargas, who will reveal the stories behind the moai, ceremonial centers, and petroglyphs. Day 7. Experience the relaxing atmosphere of Samoa—a land that has changed little from ancient times, making it one of the most traditional of Polynesian cultures. This beautiful chain of volcanic islands enchanted Robert Louis Stevenson who called it home and wrote of the “sense of seduction” inspired by this unique habitat where some of the world’s most vivid natural colors can be found. Visit Vailima, Stevenson’s lovely plantation-style estate and his last home, now a museum restored to show the lavish comfort he and his wife, Fanny, enjoyed. We’ll be treated to a lavish traditional feast and a fia fia—a colorful performance of Samoan dance and song. From Polynesia we continue our voyage across the Pacific, crossing the inter-national date line. We lose a day en route and arrive in Australia the following afternoon.

Days 9 & 10. We land in Cairns and transfer to Port Douglas, a charming resort town on the shores of the South Pacific Ocean. From here, venture out to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest known coral reef in the world and home to an exceptionally rich variety of marine life. We visit the northern reaches of the reef where the fish and coral are the most diverse, to snorkel among the rainbow variety of corals with schools of triggerfish, unicornfish, bumphead parrot fish, and sea turtles. Sea Temple Resort & Spa, Port Douglas Alternate: Instead of exploring the Great Barrier Reef, discover the natural wonders of the world’s oldest rain forest—the Daintree—approximately 90 million years older than the Amazon rain forest. Go on a Dreamtime walk in Mossman Gorge with an Aboriginal guide, a member of the Kuku Yalanji group, to learn about his people’s legends and special relationship with this unique tropical environment.

r Our expedition will support an artisan of the Gumbaynggirr tribe who creates traditional paintings. We will also donate funds to the Royal Flying Doctor Service that provides medical care and transportation to people who live in the Outback.

Days 11, 12 & 13. Fly by private jet to Siem Reap, our base for a leisurely exploration of Angkor, the heart of the ancient Khmer Empire and one of humankind’s greatest architectural triumphs. Visit the stunningly beautiful Angkor Wat temple complex, and survey its massive towers, carved murals, colonnades, and courtyards that exemplify classic Khmer architecture. At Angkor Thom, explore the famous Bayon Temple and the Terrace of the Elephants; and wander among the ruins of Ta Prohm, still tangled in the thick roots of banyan trees. And, if you wish, you may visit the Kok Dong Primary School to meet local children and teachers. In the evening, at our historic luxury hotel, enjoy a fine dinner and see a performance of classical Apsara dance, whose beautiful costumed dancers echo the shapes of the celestial beings seen in the sculptures of Angkor Wat.Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor Cambodia Alternate: Instead of visiting Angkor Wat, travel to the lost jungle temple of Beng Melea, overgrown with majestic trees and surrounded by a lush bamboo forest. Visit Bakong Temple and the multitowered Lolei, once an island temple in the center of a great reservoir. Take part in a tea ceremony with a resident monk at a pagoda and learn about monastic life here. Then visit village workshops to observe the production of silk textiles, ceramics, miniature sculptures, and shadow puppets.

Vietnam Alternate: Instead of Cambodia, explore historic Hanoi, a beautiful 1,000-year-old city filled with lakes and parks. Visit Ho Chi Minh’s wooden house on stilts and the curiously shaped One Pillar Pagoda, originally built in 1049. Then travel to the spectacular seascape of Ha Long Bay, and cruise among more than a thousand karst limestone pillars, islets, and floating villages. Days 14 & 15. Board our private jet and fly to Agra, India, site of the famous Taj Mahal. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned this astoundingly beautiful monument in the 17th century as a tribute to the memory of his second wife Mumtaz Mahal. A masterpiece of the Mughal Empire, the monument soars majestically above the banks of the Yamuna River. Wander this enchanting work of art, which incorporates and expands on Persian, Hindu, and Islamic styles. Admire the Taj Mahal’s lovely form among the reflecting pools and gardens that surround it, and examine its intricate mosaics made of precious stones.

Reboard our private jet and fly to Jaipur, the “Pink City,” named for the rose color of its prominent buildings that were painted for a citywide makeover to honor a visit by the Prince of Wales in 1876. See the unique Palace of the Winds, an oasis for women of the court to secretly observe palace activities. Visit the sumptuous City Palace and its museum to see royal artworks and artifacts, including exquisite robes, toys from the royal playroom, and antique weaponry. Explore the whimsical Jantar Mantar, an 18th-century observatory with enormous and sculptural astronomical tools. Days 16 & 17. Depart India in the morning and fly by private jet to Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will transfer to private local aircraft to venture into one of two different areas of Tanzania. No other country has more land devoted to national parks and game reserves.

Take a short flight to the Serengeti National Park, site of the most complex and least disturbed ecosystem on Earth. Begin your safari from the moment you land in the bush with a game drive en route to your lodgings. Later, venture deep into the savannah and be surrounded by the beauty of the land and the staggering concentration of animals that live here. Africa’s densest “big cat” predator populations (lions, cheetahs, and leopards) thrive here. Wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, impala, and giraffe also abound, and although these animals are protected from human hunters, they may not be spared by the “big cats,” as we may witness while exploring this area. Or descend into the Ngorongoro Crater to observe the permanent population of about 25,000 animals in the largest unbroken caldera in the world. Days 18 & 19. Arrive in Luxor and head to the Luxor Museum to view its stunning collection of statues, figures, bas-reliefs, and mummies. Spend the next morning in the Valley of the Kings, where we visit the tombs of divine pharaohs, including King Tutankhamun. Stop at the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the longest reigning female pharaoh and one of history’s great leaders. See the Colossi of Memnon, two enormous statues that are all that remain of the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III, who commissioned many of the monuments and temples in Luxor. Visit Medinet Habu, the best-preserved mortuary temple in the area; and gaze up at colorful reliefs detailing the triumphs of Ramses III, often considered the last great pharaoh. Sail the Nile River in a felucca, a traditional sailboat. Day 20 (continued) & 21. After seeing the Pyramids, we reboard our private jet and continue to Fez, Morocco. Founded in the ninth century, Fez is the most complete medieval Islamic city in the world and continues to be considered the spiritual, cultural, and intellectual capital of Morocco. Visit Fez-el-Bali, a colorful medina and the oldest part of town. Wander this UNESCO World Heritage site, a maze of narrow streets filled with fountains, restored medieval-period madrassas, and mosques, most notably the exquisite Kairouyine Mosque. Peruse the fine wares at the bustling souks and hidden fondouks, where Morocco’s traditional arts and crafts flourish. Observe tanners, silk dyers, brass workers, and other skilled artisans who carry on with fascinating centuries-old traditions. Just west of the medina, at Fez el J’did, view the imposing gates of the Royal Palace covered with rich zellige tile work. tcs & starquest expeditions, inc., 1000 second avenue, suite 1400, seattle, Wa 98104 is the qualified tour operator that will organize and administer the Around the World by Private Jet expedition. tcs & starquest expeditions, inc., as the principal, is responsible to you for arranging and providing all of the services and accommodations offered in connection with the tour, provided, however, that in the absence of gross negligence on our part, we are not responsible for personal injury or property damage caused by the air carrier, hotel, or other suppliers of any of the services being offered in connection with this expedition. The passenger tickets in use by the carriers shall constitute the sole contract between the carriers and the passenger; the carriers are not responsible for any act, omission, or event during the time expedition participants are not aboard their conveyance. TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc., shall not be held liable for (A) any damage to, or loss of, property or injury to, or death of, persons occasioned directly or indirectly by an act or omission of any other provider, including but not limited to any defect in any aircraft, watercraft, or vehicle operated or provided by such other provider, and (B) any loss or damage due to delay, cancellation, or disruption in any manner caused by the laws, regulations, acts or failures to act, demands, orders, or interpositions of any government or any subdivision or agent thereof, or by acts of God, strikes, fire, flood, war, rebellion, terrorism, insurrection, sickness, quarantine, epidemics, theft, or any other cause(s) beyond their control. The participant waives any claim against TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc. for any such loss, damage, injury, or death. By registering for this expedition, the participant certifies that he/she does not have any mental, physical, or other condition or disability that would create a hazard for him/herself or other participants. TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc. reserves the right in their sole discretion to accept, decline to accept, or remove any participant on this expedition and reserves the right, subject to the terms of this Contract, to withdraw any part or all of the trip and to make such changes as may be necessary. TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc., shall not be liable for any air carrier’s cancellation penalty incurred by the purchase of a nonrefundable ticket to or from the participant’s departure city of the Around the World by Private Jet expedition.

terMs & conDitions:reservations and payment: To reserve your place on an Around the World by Private Jet expedition, complete the Reservation Form and return it with your deposit of $2,500 per person. The deposit may be made by check; wire transfer; or by a major credit card such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover Card. If you pay your initial deposit by credit card, it is fully refundable until you sign the Reservation Form. The second payment of $15,000 per person and final payment are payable by check or wire transfer only, made out to a secure escrow account according to the following schedule:

october 28, 2011 departure: Make checks payable to “atW4-11 escrow.” The second payment is due March 28, 2011. Final payment is due July 28, 2011.

security agreement: Your payments are held in an escrow account at The Commerce Bank of Washington, 601 Union Street, Suite 3600, Seattle, WA, 98101-1342. Participants are protected by a Letter of Credit #592 issued by The Commerce Bank of Washington. Any claims against this letter of credit must be filed with TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc. or The Commerce Bank of Washington within 60 days of the termination of the expedition. After that time, TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc. and The Commerce Bank of Washington will be released from liability under the security agreement.

expedition price: The expedition price of $62,950 per person (double occupancy) with a $8,150 single supplement includes a privately chartered Boeing 757 that departs from and returns to Orlando, Florida, U.S.A. included are deluxe or best available accommodations and all applicable taxes in the destinations and options as indicated in the brochure, from arrival at the first hotel through departure from the last hotel. All meals beginning with dinner on the first night of the expedition and ending with lunch aboard the jet on the last day of the expedition are included. All taxes; group transportation; excursions; complete program of special events and activities, including an extensive program of customized options at most destinations; enrichment program including lectures by a team of experts; services of professional staff, including an expedition physician, to assist you throughout the trip; cost of philanthropic activities; amenities package; $100,000 medical evacuation insurance for covered reasons; bottled water throughout the program (during sightseeing, at scheduled meals, and in your room); all beverages, including liquor, aboard the private jet; liquor during special events and cocktail parties on land; house wine and/or beer at lunch and dinner, and coffee, tea, milk, and soft drinks at all scheduled meals on land; baggage handling during the expedition; group transfer from Sanford International Airport to Orlando International Airport at the end of the expedition; and tips or gratuities to local guides, drivers, porters, and waitstaff are included. Any tips or gratuities not specifically mentioned as included in the total expedition price will be at your discretion. not included in the price is commercial airfare between your home city and Orlando, Florida; airport transfers at the beginning and end of the expedition, except as noted above; the extra cost of shipping final documents to international households; optional and additional accident/baggage/cancellation insurance; passport and visa fees; personal expenses such as laundry, telephone, fax, and Internet charges; all beverages not mentioned above as included; hotel mini-bar charges; meals not scheduled by TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc.; and inoculation and medication costs of any kind. Except for “major changes” as described below, no refund will be made for any accommodations or services included in the expedition price that you voluntarily do not use.

airfare: We are happy to assist you in reserving commercial flights from your home city to Orlando, Florida, and from Orlando, Florida to your home city, in the class of service that you prefer. Please ask for details.

insurance: trip cancellation, health, and accident insurance are available for purchase; we will send you more information upon registration. these important protections can save you money if you are forced to cancel or alter your trip. Insurance premium payments are subject to the policies of the insurance carrier and are generally not refundable.

Baggage: On the private jet, each passenger is limited to 90 pounds of checked baggage in 2 bags (one limited to 50 pounds and the other limited to 40), plus a few smaller carry-on items such as a backpack, purse, camera, and/or laptop. For international flights, the air carrier’s liability is limited to the actual value of the baggage but not more than 1,000 Special Drawing Rights, approximately $1,250 per passenger, unless a higher value is declared at the time of check-in and an appropriate excess valuation charge is paid. Baggage and personal effects are at all times the sole responsibility of the participant.

aircraft: The private jet flights will be performed using a Boeing 757 jet with 80 VIP-class seats operated by Thomson Airways, TUI Travel PLC, Wigmore House/Wigmore Place, Wigmore Lane, Bedfordshire, Luton LU2 9TN England. The operator and air carrier reserve the right to substitute equivalent aircraft if necessary.

cancellations & refunds: If you cancel your reservation, your right to receive a refund is limited, as set forth in the following schedules. All cancellations must be in writing and will become effective as of the date of the postmark or email receipt. All requests for refunds must be sent to us in writing via mail, fax, or e-mail.

Refunds will be made within 14 days of receipt of your notice of cancellation.

Leaving an expedition in progress, for any reason whatsoever, will not result in a refund, and no refunds will be made for any unused portions of an expedition. If you cancel and provide a substitute participant for this trip, you will receive a full refund of money paid toward the price less an administrative charge of $25 for effecting the substitution once the substitute participant has paid in full. please note that the costs for visas, commercial air tickets, insurance, suite upgrades, and pre- or post-expedition independent arrangements may not be refundable. If we make major changes prior to departure, you have the right to cancel and receive a full refund. The following are major changes: (1) a change in the departure or return date, unless the change results from a flight delay experienced by the air carrier (If, however, the delay is longer than 48 hours, it will be considered a major change.); (2) a change in the origin or destination city for any flight leg, unless the change affects only the order in which cities named in a tour package are visited; (3) a substitute of any hotel of lower standard; (4) a price increase of more than 10 percent occurring 10 or more days before departure. In no event can we increase your price less than 10 days before departure. If a major change must be made in the program, we will notify you within 7 days after first learning of the change, but in any event at least 10 days prior to the scheduled departure. If, less than 10 days before scheduled departure, we become aware that a major change must be made, we will notify you as soon as possible. Within 7 days after receiving notification of a major change, but in no event later than departure, you may cancel your reservation and you will receive a full refund within 14 days after canceling. If a major change occurs after the departure of the flight, which you are unwilling to accept, we will refund, within 14 days after your scheduled return date, that portion of your payment, which applies to the services not accepted. If we must cancel the expedition, we will notify you in writing within 7 days of the cancellation, but in no event later than 10 days before the scheduled departure date. We have no right to cancel the tour less than 10 days before departure, except for circumstances that make it physically impossible to perform the tour. If that occurs, we will notify you as soon as possible, but not later than the scheduled departure date. If the expedition is canceled, we will make a full refund to you within 14 days after cancellation. The rights and remedies made available under this contract are in addition to any other rights or remedies available under applicable law. However, we offer refunds under this contract with the express understanding that the receipt of that refund by a traveler waives the additional remedies.

itinerary changes: The itineraries and staff are subject to modification and change by TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc. Every reasonable effort will be made to operate the program as planned; however, should unforeseen world events and conditions require our itinerary to be altered, we reserve the right to do so for the safety and best interest of the group.

international flights: The operation of these flights is subject to the foreign governments involved granting landing rights for the flight. If the air carrier cannot obtain these rights for any particular flight leg of the expedition, that flight leg will be canceled and alternative arrangements may be made, at the discretion of TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc.

health requirements: This is an active program, which requires you to make a realistic assessment of your health. All participants are expected to be in active good health, to enjoy traveling as part of a group, and to be ready to experience cultural differences with grace. Walking and climbing stairs are required in many hotels and airports, to board the aircraft, and are part of many excursions. Prior to traveling, we highly recommend visiting your personal physician for a check-up, so that you may discuss your ability to participate in this type of journey. To go to certain destinations or participate in certain activities, such as visiting a high-altitude area (7,500 feet above sea level and higher), you will need to obtain your physicianís approval. A form will be sent to you for your physician to sign. An alternate destination or activity can be arranged, if your physician recommends it. Malaria and other diseases are present in some of the countries featured in this itinerary; proof of yellow fever inoculation is required. For the latest recommendations on specific health precautions for the areas you will visit, consult your physician and the Centers for Disease Control. Any physical condition requiring special attention, diet, or treatment should be reported in writing when the reservation is made. If you require a slower pace, extra assistance, or the use of a cane or walking stick, arrangements will be made for private touring at each destination, if necessary, at the discretion of our tour staff. Any extra cost for such arrangements will be the responsibility of the traveler. If you would like to forego some of the scheduled sightseeing to rejuvenate and relax, please feel free to do so at any time.

single/shared accommodations & suite upgrades: A limited number of single rooms are available at extra cost on a first-come, first-served basis. We will do everything possible to assist persons requesting a roommate. If one is not confirmed, the single rate will be charged. Suite rooms are available in some destinations; more information about them, including their extra costs, will be sent to you in the months before departure.

Basis of rates: All prices are based on two persons sharing a room. All prices and fares are quoted in U.S. dollars. The rates are based on current tariffs and are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. While we will do everything possible to maintain the listed prices, if it is necessary to levy a surcharge, we reserve the right to do so and will notify you at the time of final invoicing. TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc. reserves the right to cancel any trip because of inadequate enrollment that makes the trip economically infeasible to operate. In such a case, a full refund of the expedition cost will be made.
