Clinic Tips Joy Jones, R.N., BSN The cold and flu season is already upon us! Here are some simple things to help prevent the spread of viruses:

• Do not share drinks or eating utensils with friends.

• Frequently wash hands with warm water.

• Dress appropriately for the cold temperatures.

• Get enough sleep. • A healthy diet can help ward off viral

infections.

I know it can be a struggle for parents to figure out if their child has the flu or just a cold? Should they be sent to school or kept home? Hopefully this information will help you when deciding. Please remember if your child does run a fever, they need to stay home.

STAY HOME WHEN SICK: Those with flu-like symptoms should stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or greater) or signs of a fever, without the use of fever reducing medicines. They should stay home even if they are using antiviral drugs. Students who do not feel well should stay home. When students come to school ill, they not only are unable to participate fully in class, but they may also infect other students with their illness.

MEDICATIONS: As a reminder, LCPS no longer provides Tylenol (Acetaminophen) to students.

As Thanksgiving quickly approaches, I would like to thank The River Bend community for being so generous and supportive. Thanks to your generous donations, we had many warm and wonderful winter coats and clothes to distribute at our Potomac Fall's Cluster Free Clothing Sale on November 16th! So many local families will be well clothed and warm this season thanks to all of you! THANK YOU!

In the coming months let's continue our culture of giving and sharing at the Bend as we prepare for the Holidays this winter. The Raven Holiday Giving Tree is a tradition we will continue. This year, instead of collecting unwrapped specific gift items, we will collect $25 gift cards to specific stores. This is a wonderful way to share the joy of the season with those less fortunate in our River Bend family. Our students will receive gifts that were personally selected by their parents, thus giving our families the joy of giving AND receiving! Here are a few of the various programs and organizations that may be able to offer needed assistance - please contact them for specific details:

• Loudoun Hunger Relief: When you visit, we supply enough food to prepare three nutritionally-balanced meals for three days for every member of your family. See this link: (http://www.loudounhunger.org)

• LINK (http://www.linkagainsthunger.org) has a Mobile Food Pantry on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. Visit website or call 703-437-1776. In December (Saturday, Dec. 14th), LINK will distribute food and new toys (children newborn - 16 years of age) to clients who have signed up. For more information, click here.

River Bend Middle School Quarter 2 2019

The second quarter of the school began November 6th. First quarter report cards will be available in ParentVue on Monday, November 11th. If you need a print out of your child’s report card or you would like to arrange a conference with your child’s teachers, please contact your child’s school counselor. If you have questions about specific grades on the report card, please contact your child’s teacher directly. Counseling groups have been organized in each of the grade levels to address areas of improvement for students. Additional groups will be developed as the need arises. October was National Bullying Prevention month. On October 23, students and staff wore orange to show that we are united in kindness and respect. Students participated in a circle with their counselor during resource, where we discussed how to recognize what bullying looks like, why someone might be a bully, and how to deal with bullying behaviors. In November, we will be doing circles on the topics of Digital Citizenship & Cyberbullying. The course selection process for classes to be taken during the 2019-2020 school year will begin in mid to late January. The first step is for all academic and world language teachers to make recommendations for each student suggesting what level of classes they should take next year. Once that is completed, students will have the opportunity to choose their electives. The list of your child’s recommendations and elective choices will be available for viewing in ParentVue/StudentVue later this school year.

Chick-Fil-A, Sterling locations Bungalow Lakehouse, Sterling Cheesecake Factory, Dulles Town Center Choolah, Cascades Overlook We appreciate the generous donation and support from Mathnasium in Countryside. Dimitrios Tzoumas funded and participated in our 1st quarter Dreambox/Divide & Conquer Math Celebration for achieving and improving students.

We are also continuing our "Pavilion Project" with our Tech Ed Department and MQ & Associates. We are looking to partner with local licensed building contractors on this project. If you are interested in hearing more, please email carolyn.mccormick@lcps.org.

October and November were very big months in the Library, with lots of fun and engaging activities happening on nearly a daily basis. Students were engaged with reading through our annual Harry Potter and the Reader’s Cup Challenge. (congratulations to the winners - 6th grade!) We have had great fun and success with our Makerspace Mondays with a variety of activities such as Keva blocks, Spheros and making cards for Veterans. Which leads to another collaboration with the history

department on the Veteran’s Day display, honoring our school family of veterans. Our school book fair was another success, earning our library additional funds to help pay for author visits and materials to provide our students with extended experiences in our space. Both librarians were away at different times, attending library specific conferences to learn more about enhancing our space to meet the needs of our 21st century learners. Watch for more new and exciting activities and collaborations coming from these conferences! The River Bend MS library continues to be the heart of the school!
