A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar
Our children are like the Samaritan woman in today’s gospel.
They need more than material things. They need the “living wa-
ter” only the adults can give. It will teach them how to make deci-
sions, take responsibility, respect themselves and other and live
their commitments. With this “living water” they will “never
thirst.” Liturgy Schedule for Immaculate Conception New Cumberland Sunday: Mass 8:30am Wednesday: Mass 8:30am First Saturdays: Mass 8:30am Reconciliation available on Sundays at 8:00am.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. What does this mean and what biblical basis is there for it?
A day of abstinence is a day on which Catholics four-teen years or older are required to abstain from eating meat (a food which has historically been symbolic of feasting and festivities because it could not be eaten every day in most historic cultures for economic rea-sons). By abstaining from this festive food on Fridays, we symbolize our sorrow for our sins on the day on which the Lord Jesus died because of our sins.
Under the current discipline in America, fish, eggs, milk products, and condiments or foods made using animal fat or meat are permitted for members of the Western Rite of the Church. Only the eating of meat itself (beef, poultry, pork, etc.) is forbidden. (However, all animal products are forbidden for members of the Eastern Rites; but, the requirement of abstinence is not man-dated by law in those rites).
A biblical basis for abstaining from meat as a sign of penance for our sins is found in the book of Daniel, where the prophet mourns over the sins of Israel:
“In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia . . . ‘I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.’” (Daniel 10:1-3).
Stations of the Cross We will have Stations of the Cross at
6:00pm with Mass to follow at 6:30pm on Fridays during
Lent. At Immaculate Conception Mass will be at 5:00pm
with Stations of the Cross to follow at 5:25pm. There is a
sign-up sheet at the back of the church for those who would
like to lead the Stations of the Cross or carry the cross.

comprise a list of nominees for the Vicariate Council voting
on Monday, March 16th, @ 7:00pm.

will be Holy Hour & Reconciliation for all CCD students

regular bingo games. There will be 4 Special games at $5
each, 50/50 Raffle, Paint Stick Raffles $5 each and Conces-
sions available for purchase. Doors open at 1:00pm and Bin-
go starts at 2:00pm. Tickets are available at: the parish of-
fice, Marlene’s A Cut Above & Davis Pharmacy or see any

all the information. Please come for an afternoon of fun!
The first reading describes how God provided water to the ungrateful complainers of Israel, thus placing Jesus’ promise within the context of the Exodus account of water coming from the rock at Horeb. The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 95), refers both to the Rock of our salvation and also to our hardened hearts. It reminds us that our hard hearts need to be softened by God through our grace-prompted and assisted prayer, fasting and works of mercy which enable us to receive the living water of the Holy Spirit, salvation, and eternal life from the Rock of our salvation. In the second reading, Saint Paul asserts that, as the Savior of mankind, Jesus poured the living water of the gift of the Holy Spirit into our hearts. In the Gospel, an unclean and outcast Samaritan woman is given an op-portunity to receive the living water. Jesus awakened in the woman at the well a thirst for the wholeness and integrity which she had lost, a thirst which he had come to satisfy. This Gospel passage also gives us Jesus' revelation about himself as the Source of Living Water and teaches us that we need the grace of Jesus Christ for eternal life because he is that life-giving water.
