Type of Manual. This manual willshow you how to use the M291 SkinDecon Kit to decontaminate exposed skin,

The official nomenclature is DecontaminatingKit, Skin: M291. The NSN is 4230 -01-276-1which identifies a box containing 20 kits.

Model Number and Equipment Name.

Purpose of Equipment. The M291 SkinDecon Kit allows you to completelydecontaminate your skin through physicalremoval, absorption, and neutralization of toxicagent with no long-term harmful effects.

M291 Skin Decon KitNOTE: This kit should be used both for actual combat and for training purposes.

1-2. MAINTENANCE FORMS AND RECORDS. No maintenance forms orrecords are required for use of the M291 Skin Decon Kit.

1-3. REPORTING EQUIPMENT IMPROVEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS (EIRS),If your M291 Skin Decon Kit needs improvement, let us know. Sendus and EIR, You, the user, are the only one who can tell us whatyou don’t like about your equipment. Let us know why you don’tlike the design or performance. Put it on an SF 368 (QualityDeficiency Report). Mail it to us at Commander, US Army anent,Munitions and Chemical Command, ATTN: AMSMC-QAD(R), Rock Island,IL 61299-6000.

NOTE: Air Force personnel will submit SF 368 according toT.O,00-35D-54. Navy personnel submit SF 368 according to NAVSUPP-485.Marine Corps will submit ElR’s in accordance with MCO 1650.17,

1.3.1. REPORTING ADVERSE REACTIONS, If you experience any adversereactions to the use of the M291 Skin Decon Kit it shouldbe reported immediately. An adverse reaction should be reportedon an SF 380 (Reporting and Processing Medical Materiel Complaint/Quality Improvement Reports) and mailed to “Defense Personnel SupportCenter, DPSCRQ, 2800 S. 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19101-8419.

1-5. CORROSION DATA FEEDB ACK. Corrosion Prevention and Control (CPC) ofArmy materiel is a continuing concern. It is important that any corrosion problemswith this item be reported so that the problem can be corrected and improvementscan be made to prevent the problem in future items.

NOTE: Use of key words such as “corrosion”, “rust ,“ “deterioration”, or “cracking” willassure that the information is identified as a CPC problem.

a. Definition. While corrosion is typically associated with rusting of metals, itcan also include deterioration of other materials such as rubber and plastic.Unusual cracking, softening, swelling, or breaking of these materials may be acorrosion problem.

b. Reporting. Such problems should be reported using SF 368 (QualityDeficiency Report). Send the form to: Commander, US Army Armament,Munitions and Chemical Command, ATTN: AMSMC-QAD(R), Rock Island, IL61299-6000.

1-6. EQUIPMENT CHARACTERISTICS, CAPABILITIES AND FEATURES.

a. Contentst Each Skin Decon Kit consists of a wallet-like carrying pouchcontaining 6 individual decon packets, enough to do 3 complete skindecontamination. Each packet contains an applicator pad filled withdecon powder.

b. ACCOUntability. Skin Decon Kit is expendable. Discard carrying pouchafter packets are all used

c. Storage. Skin Decon Kit can be stored over a wide range of temperaturesfrom severe cold to hot: -60° F (-51 0 C) to 160o F (71oC).

CHAPTER 2OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

SECTION I. EQUIPMENT INSPECTION

2-1. GENERAL. You, the operator, must be sure your Skin Decon Kit is ready for useboth before your mission and after. The following inspection must be performed tomake sure you can accomplish your mission.

2-2. PROCEDURE:

a inspect kit for loose black powder. If no powder is detected, kit is missionready.

b. If powder is detected, inspect each packet for leaks.

c. Discard all leaking packets.

d. Reinsert good packets into carrying pouch with TEAR LINE at bottom.

NOTE: If there are fewer than 4 skin decon packets in your kit, request an additionalkit. Continue to use your kit until all packets are gone.

WARNING

Use water to wash toxic agent out of eyes, cuts or wounds.

The complete decontamination of the face and other areas of exposedskin must be done as quickly as possible, 3 minutes or less.

2-3. OPERATING PROCEDURE. When you find or suspect agent on your skin or abuddy sees it and tells you, act immediately.

a. Put on your mask and hood. Do not zip the hood. Do not pull the drawstrings. Do not fasten the shoulder straps.

b. Seek overhead cover or use a poncho for protection against furthercontamination.

c. Remove one skin decon packet from carrying pouch.

NOTE: Although any notch may be used to open packet, opening at TEAR LINEwill place applicator pad in a position that is easier to use.

d. Tear open quickly at notch. e. Remove applicator pad frompacket and discard empty packet.

f. Unfold applicator pad and slipfinger(s) into handle.

NOTE: For the following decontaminationprocedures, use entire surface ofapplicator pad.

Thoroughly scrub exposed skin orback of hand, palm, and fingersuntil completely covered withblack powder from the applicatorpad.

Switch applicator pad to otherhand and repeat procedure, stepg, above.

NOTE: Do not discard applicatorpad at this time.

NOTE: If, when you were contaminated, youwere masked with the hood zipped anddrawstring pulled tight, stop. Discard theapplicator pad, put on your protective gloves andgo to paragraphs (p. 2-14). If, however, youwere masked, but the zipper and drawstringwere not secure, go to paragraph n (p. 2-13).

The stars in the drawing show areas of the facethat should be scrubbed with an extra strokebecause they are hard to decontaminate.

NOTE: Procedure is the same regardless ofprotective mask type. In case of use with NavyChemical Protective Overgarment, which hashood attached to protective jacket, ignoremention of hood.

i. Thoroughly scrub exposed skin of face untilcompletely covered with black powder fromthe applicator pad.

(1) Hold breath, close eyes, grasp maskbeneath chin and pull hood and maskaway from chin enough to allow onehand between the mask and your face.Hold mask in this position during steps(2) through (6).

(5) Turn your hand out, and quicklywipe the inside of mask thattouches your face.

(6) Discard applicator pad.

(7) Immediately seal mask, clear itand check it.
