    NIGHT The Sun descending in the west,

    The evening star does shine; The birds are silent in their nest And I must seek for mine.

    The moon, like a flower

    In heaven‟s high bower, With silent delight Sit sand smiles on the night.

    Farewell, green fields and happy grove,

    Where flocks have took delight ; Where lambs have nibbled, silent move The feet of angels bright;

    Unseen they pour blessing And joy without ceasing

    On each bud and blossom, And each sleeping bosom.

    They look in every thoughtless nest Where birds are covered warm;

    They visit caves of every beast, To keep them all from harm:

Read the passage given below : Jack was always tired when he woke up in the morning. “I really can‟t understand it,” his brother said. “You go to bed earlier than I do and you get up later. I know that you sleep well because you snore a lot! So why are you tired in the morning? It doesn‟t make sense!” “Perhaps because I dream so much,” Jack suggested. But dreaming is good for you. “All the doctors agree about that.” “Maybe,” Jack replied. “The trouble is that I always dream about working hard throughout the night. Last night I dreamt that I was a miner and I was digging coal all night long. I am exhausted in the morning! Then a few nights ago I was a sailor. I was on one of those old fashioned sailing ships. We were crossing the Atlantic and there was a terrible storm. We had to struggle for hours to stop the ship from sinking. It‟s always like that. In the past few weeks I have dreamt that I was a waiter, a lorry driver and a football player. I never have a cushy job.” “I was reading an article about sleep in a magazine the other day,” his brother said. “The writer‟s advice was to try and relax before you go to sleep.” “How should I do that?” Jack asked. “Well, why don‟t you listen to some music? Something pleasant.” Jack was willing to try anything. But what sort of music? He liked pop but that was too noisy. So, he decided to play some soothing classical music. He put on the music but and in fifteen minutes he was fast asleep. “Well?” his brother asked him at breakfast next morning. “Did it work?” Jack yawned. “I didn‟t dream about hard work for once. I dreamt that I was conducting a choir. The trouble was that the singers weren‟t very good and they had keep on singing the same piece again and again. We ended up practicing all night. I can tell you that I feel more tired today than I usually do!” Answer the following questions:

    i. Why did Jack‟s brother think that there was no reason for Jack to be so tired in the morning?

    ii. What reason did Jack give for being tired in the morning? iii. According to the article in the magazine, what was the best way to

    get good sleep at night? iv. To put himself to sleep, why did Jack prefer classical music to pop

  • Read the poem given below. THE WASP AND THE BEE A wasp met a bee that was just buzzing by, And he said, “My dear cousin, can you tell me why You are loved so much better by people than I? Why my neck is as bright and as yellow as gold, And my shape is most elegant too to behold; Yet nobody likes me for that, I am told.” Says the bee: “My dear cousin, it is all very true. But indeed they would love me no better than you, If I were but half as much mischief to do. „ You have a fine shape and a delicate wing, And they know you are handsome but there is one thing Which they cannot put up with, and that is your sting. „Now put it at once in your own common sense, If you are not so ready at taking offence. Though my dress is so homely and plain as you see, And I have a small sting, they are not angry with me, Because I am a busy and good-natured bee,‟ From this, pray let the ill-natured people beware; Because I am sure if they do not take care, They‟ll never be loved, if they are even so fair.

    Read the following passage carefully:- There was a time when hills, mountains and even plains were covered thick forests. As the population grew, trees were cut down to meet the demand for fuel and timber. The trees cut were usually very well developed trees that had broken many years to mature. When they were cut, they broke down many younger trees around them as they fell to the ground. Thus, our wonderful forests came to be destroyed. Now we don’t have enough trees to give us fire wood. So, people forced to burn cattle dung, which ought to be saved for use of manure. Cattle dung is required to maintained the fertility of the soil. Chemical fertilisers can’t help. In many areas where only chemical fertilizers are used, crop yields have started falling. There is another serious problem. Now we don’t have enough trees to absorb all the carbon dioxide that is being produced in our homes, factories and by vehicles. The air remains polluted and it can give us a number of serious diseases. Trees are

    Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:- The Unsung Heroes—That’s what they are. Uniformed men and women who protect our country from danger and foreign intrusion; day after day, month after month, year after year Countless are the sacrifices they have made, risking their lives for the safety of our nation. Their call of duty sometimes brings them far away from their loved ones for long periods of time, to areas ravaged by war and famine and inflicted with disease. Often, then are unable to join their family members for birthdays, anniversaries, and other festive occasions, like Dussehra, Diwali, Christmas or New Year. Yet sadly many a time we fail to appreciate their deeds and sacrifices we tend to be blind to the fact that everyday, the members of the armed forces are playing their part to ensure that the peace and stability of our country is maintained. They patrol our seas and skies, and guard our borders against foreign intrusion. We have the marine police protecting our waters, looking out for pirates and smugglers who bring in illegal immigrants or smuggle goods in or out of the country under the cover of darkness; the air force protecting us from the air raids and helping out in rescue missions; the police who see the smooth running of traffic and security in our towns and country side , and members of the Federal Reserve Unit who prevent riots and fights. We do not have to wait till Warriors’ Day to remember them. In fact for every new day that we are blessed with peace, we have to thank them.
