• Designed to be both effective and durable, the basket or screen is the heart of an Armstrong® strainer.
• Armstrong® supplies baskets for simplex and duplex strainers, and screens for Y strainers, in standard and heavy-duty designs.
• Standard design baskets meet the needs of most applications.• Armstrong® recommends the heavy-duty design in cases when
straining an extremely high viscosity material or experiencing a high solids load.
• Baskets and screens are available in many materials. • These materials cover nearly all corrosion resistance levels
needed in strainer services. • A wide range of perforations and mesh provides removal of
solids to as low as 20 microns.
Basket Construction
• Each style basket includes a perforated sheet induction welded to a rigid top ring and solid bottom cap. Special attention to the welds along the perforated sheet seam, prevent the possible bypass of solids and maintain the basket’s strength.
• A handle, welded to the I.D. of the top ring, facilitates easy removal.
Screen Construction
• Y strainer screens, rolled to form a perfect cylinder, are induction welded along the seam.
• A neat weld, applied along the perforated sheet seam, prevents the possible bypass of solids and provides a seam of acceptable strength.
• Y strainer screen seats to specific dimensions and, accordingly, both the O.D. and length of these screens have a closely tolerance.
Perforated Plate Specification
• Armstrong® baskets utilize perforated sheets because of their greater inherent strength and resistance to stress cracking.
• The objective is to select a perforation with the best open area, hole arrangement and sheet thickness.
Wire Mesh Specifications
• Armstrong® strainers are available with woven wire mesh screens.
• Wire mesh provides smaller openings for very fine straining applications down to 20 microns.
• Baskets and screens use monofilament mesh possessing equal wire size and wire count in both directions to produce square openings.
• As with perforated sheet, the best wire mesh selection is a balance of open area and wire diameter.
CONICAL StrainersTypical service:
• Armstrong® CONICAL Strainers fabricated are designed to remove particles during the start-up operation.
• Temporary strainers are not manufactured to be used instead of permanent strainers.
• Temporary strainers must be removed after initial start-up.
Design:
• Available with special lengths providing straining ratios of many times the pipe area.
• The ring is machined to meet ANSI B16.5 requirements for RF and RJ flange gaskets.
• Different shapes are available to meet pressure drop requirements.

DUPLEX StrainersTypical service:
• This strainer serves to protect valves, pumps, meters, spray nozzles, and various other equipment. It is often used to ensure product purity in such industries as gas, petroleum, biofuels, and power plants.
• A duplex strainer is used in applications where fluid flow cannot be interrupted when the basket is removed for cleaning.
• A duplex strainer maintains a continuous flow by utilizing two separate basket chambers with integral valves to direct flow into one of the basket chambers.
• ANSI/ASME are standard, with the capability to supply larger pipe size.
• Basket can be tailored to hold sufficient solids for the required time between clean-outs.
• Flange size can be selected to fix existing piping, or to achieve the required clean pressure drop.
• An exclusive software can calculate the pressure drop for any design condition.
• Maintenance reducing features include hinged cover with or without davit assembly.
