Message from President Carolyn Another month almost gone – not quite as busy as our previous one but that is proba- bly not a bad thing as the next few months promise to be quite busy. Please read this Bulletin thoroughly because Paula will have made note of every event that is coming up and there are times when we will need peo- ple in two places. Don’t forget that by log- ging onto our website (www.armidaledumaresq.nsw.lions.org.au) and going to the calendar under event tab then double clicking on the event you are looking for you will have access to maps that will show where an event is being held. (I am not sure how Bob does this but it is very handy.) You don’t need your member number, (your password), access this. It was great to have Adam Marshall as our guest speaker at our last meeting. Adam is a member of our club but unfortunately we have to share him with his electorate and his parliamentary responsibilities. I am al- ways in awe of his seemingly effortless ability to speak without any reference to notes. I guess that that is what happens when you are passionate about what you do but it is not surprising that he was a Youth of the Year Public Speaking Champi- on. Our Youth of the Year team has started contacting schools for entrants in this year’s contest and I know that November will be here before we know it. Please plan to support our club function on 4 th Novem- ber. It is always a special night and goes a long way to reaffirming your faith in today’s youth. We are luckier than most clubs be- cause we have a team of Lions who take responsibility for the organisation involved but it is important for our members to sup- port the event by attending. The Region 4 YOTY final will be held in Glen Innes in February 2016. We have offered to host the District final on 9 th April but have not heard whether or not we will be needed. Our Community Clean-up on 26th Septem- ber will be at the Arboretum. This has some significance for the history of our club as we were involved in setting up the sensory garden that is accessible for people in wheel chairs and also interesting for those who have problems with their vision. It will be worthwhile to make sure that it still stim- ulates the senses. The first week of the school holidays will see two girls enjoying a week at Camp Elim near Forster courtesy of our club. I know that they are both very excited to be going and that their fathers are grateful to the Club for the opportunity given to their daughters. Lion Ros is negotiating for us to run a Mel- bourne Cup Calcutta at the Bowling Club probably on the Sunday before the first Tuesday in November. This will be one of those instances where we will need Lions in two places but our club is big enough to do this. The idea of running a Calcutta was first raised by the “Ideas and Innovations” Group who are charged with investigating new avenues for fund raising and other projects so it is good to see the idea being taken to the next step. Message from President Carolyn Another month almost gone – not quite as busy as our previous one but that is proba-bly not a bad thing as the next few months promise to be quite busy. Please read this Bulletin thoroughly because Paula will have made note of every event that is coming up and there are times when we will need peo-ple in two places. Don’t forget that by log-ging onto our website (www.armidaledumaresq.nsw.lions.org.au) and going to the calendar under event tabthen double clicking on the event you are looking for you will have access to maps that will show where an event is being held.

I am al-ways in awe of his seemingly effortless ability to speak without any reference to notes. I guess that that is what happens when you are passionate about what you do but it is not surprising that he was a Youth of the Year Public Speaking Champi-on.

Our Youth of the Year team has started contacting schools for entrants in this year’s contest and I know that November will be here before we know it. Please plan to support our club function on 4th Novem-ber. It is always a special night and goes a long way to reaffirming your faith in today’s youth. We are luckier than most clubs be-

cause we have a team of Lions who take responsibility for the organisation involved but it is important for our members to sup-port the event by attending. The Region 4 YOTY final will be held in Glen Innes in February 2016. We have offered to host the District final on 9th April but have not heard whether or not we will be needed.

Our Community Clean-up on 26th Septem-ber will be at the Arboretum. This has some significance for the history of our club as we were involved in setting up the sensory garden that is accessible for people in wheel chairs and also interesting for those who have problems with their vision. It will be worthwhile to make sure that it still stim-ulates the senses.

The first week of the school holidays will see two girls enjoying a week at Camp Elim near Forster courtesy of our club. I know that they are both very excited to be going and that their fathers are grateful to the Club for the opportunity given to their daughters.

Lion Ros is negotiating for us to run a Mel-bourne Cup Calcutta at the Bowling Club probably on the Sunday before the first Tuesday in November. This will be one of those instances where we will need Lions in two places but our club is big enough to do this. The idea of running a Calcutta was first raised by the “Ideas and Innovations” Group who are charged with investigating new avenues for fund raising and other projects so it is good to see the idea being taken to the next step.

I know that members are not keen on selling raffle tickets (except to other club members at dinner meetings) but we do have to look very seriously at other ways of fund raising or we will not have money to disburse when peo-ple and organisations ask for our help. Our “I and I” groupbelieve we need to aim for $30 000.00 per year to be able to continue to support our favourite causes and Bun-nings barbeques alone will not achieve this. Your ideas are welcome!

It is not too late to book into Convention – especially if you travel with your own accommodation. Attending Con-ventions certainly gives you an opportunity to get a big-ger picture of “Lions” and the social activities are always fun.

Thank you to Julie for taking on the role of “One Shot” Ambassador and to Paula for offering to assist her. I am sure that Julie will come up with one of her creative fund-raisers for this project. Eliminating measles in third world countries is certainly a worthwhile goal for the project.

Don’t forget our DGs visit on 7th October – it would be great to have as many members and partners as possi-ble present.

Keep looking for opportunities for us to reach out and serve our community.

Carolyn

A golfing Parson, badly beaten by an elderly parishioner, returned to the clubhouse badly depressed. “Cheer up” said his opponent, “you will win eventually as you will be burying me one day”. “Yes”, said the Parson. “Even then it will be your hole”.

Australian Leo, Joel Cashman, has been awarded the prestigious International Leo of the Year Award for 2015.In 2014, Joel won the Australian Lions – Leo of the Year AwardThe medallion and certificate award is given out annually by the Lions Clubs International Board of Directors to high achieving Leos. Lions Clubs International at Work.

The dead and wounded lay strewn across the battlefield – young man cut down during a bloody engagement in the recent war between El Salvador and Honduras. A lone medic, a member of the Honduran Red Cross, hurried from man to man, giving what aid he could to the wounded. The sound of gunfire still filled the air and the all too familiar smoke of war hung over the field. The medic paid no attention to the battle raging close by, but continued to try and save the lives of the men who surrounded him. Suddenly a young soldier of the El Salvador army bounded out of the mist, his rifle at the ready. The medic, though wearing Red Cross identification, was still a member of the Honduran forces. For a moment, they stood silently face to face, enemies in a bitter struggle. But the soldier’s expression quick-ly changed and he slowly lowered his rifle. His eyes were trained on the medic’s lapel which bore the pin of Lions Clubs International. The medic, Dr. Jorge Gomez Andino, was a member of the Tegucilalpa Lions Club. Instead of assaulting his “enemy”, tears welled in the eyes of the young soldier. He grasped the hand of the doctor and told him that he was member of a Lions Club in El Salvador. Silently, the two embraced and just as silently, the soldier wended his way back to El Salvador lines to rejoin his unit. This small drama had lasted less than a minute.Dr. Gomez was president of the Honduras Red Cross National Council and he related this experience at a meeting of the Miami Florida Lions Club, where he was a guest. His voice shook with emotion as he said how he returned to treating his causalities and, with the flash of gunfire coming from both ranks, “gave thanks for the dominant spirit of Lionism’ that had just scored a victory over war.
