The Armenian Genocide
Dear President,
Over the many years, Turkey continues to deny the armenian genocide has occurred. Although
they are indeed close allies, we can not do the same. This is the day we recognize and
commemorate those that have lost their life. The first reason we should call it the armenian
genocide is because the armenian deserve the respect. You, Mr.President, your self have already
called it “Meds Yeghern”, the word for genocide in armenian. It started at the beginning, when
the Turks growing nationalism lead them to the motto “Turkey for Turks”. They saw the
armenians as a liability in their culture. On April 1914, the Turks rounded up all the Armenian
leaders were slaughtered. As the Nazi’s did, they deported the victims on a train to extermination
camps. 90 % of all Armenians were killed in the span of 8 years. So why wont be call this a
genocide? If Germany can admit to their mistakes why can’t Turkey and why can't the United
states call it one? The answer is simple, we are scared to lose Turkey as an ally. They provide an
access for us to reach Afghanistan and Iran. The United States must take a step forward and call
it a genocide. If we do not do so, we are cowards. The people that have fallen deserve to be
honored, their innocent lives lost because of their religion. The second reason we should call it a
genocide is to help Turkey accept their past. If Turkey does not accept what has happened, they
will not learn from it,potentially leading to another mass killing. As the article from
foreignaffairs.com says, “[the slaughtering] was accompanied by frequent instances of rape,
pillage, and murder, turning into massacre.” which shows the burtaility, acts which were
inhumane. In the archives of America, two reporters, Captain Emory Niles and Arthur
Sutherland went to see the situation of Anatolia. While they were there they heard that muslims
were also killed at the hand of the armenians. Turkey has used this report to defend against what
has happened. The words of two men against the accounts of the few survivors is not enough
evidence to prove that the armenian genocide never happened, or that it was justified. I am not
advocating only for the armenians, but everyone in the world for you to officially recognize the
Armenian mass killing as a genocide. As the great Bruce lee said “Mistakes are always
forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them.”
