The ARMADA SUR Diaries To celebrate 20 years of Armada Sur here’s aseries of glimpses into our finest moments.

"Footballs a funny old game" someone said, but I hope we are not sayingthat at the end of this match. I suppose if QPR can win at Chelsea, anythingis possible, so we have to stick to our gameplan today and keep up thesuperb home form. To concede only three goals at home so far this season, shows great concentration.Players who have come up trumps recently are Suso and Cristo Martin, bothTenerife lads. In fact slowly but surely the club are bringing through the localyouth, which is good for the future (as long as we can keep hold of them!)Our top scorer Aridane although, has slowed up in recent games, and it hasbeen said that the Fred Olsen ferry turns quicker than him. And the otherforward Guillem Marti is a bit of a headless chicken. Nevertheless, we are top! However, It looks as if CD Marino are heading straight back to the Tercera. They have failed to capture the imagination of the football fans in the south, and if they have been poor on the pitch they have been worse off it. It is agreat shame, as I am sure the south has the population & money to sustaina team in Segunda B.Today some fans will protest about the kick-off times and coverage of homegames on local tv. Three out of the last four have been live on TV, and thearmchair fans seem to have more respect than the people that actually goalong to matches. Enjoy it today, I am sure it certainly will not be a thrashingas many predict. This is a derby after all, although our onlyreal derby is against that mob from across the water!!

A bar just a few doors before ourTorrelaguna hotel kidnapped us andmade us drink beer and eat freelavish tapas before we could check inon the day before the match. A quietsophisticated night in the centre ofMadrid followed – except for bucketsof Coronita, friendly professionalladies at Gran Via, an anti fascistdemo in Sol plaza, and Tolf dancingin a salsa bar. The General hadadjourned to see Brit band Ghostcatacross the city after losing Gordonand Kirsty. A 3am hotel returnensured we slept well despite beinghaunted by the thought of what ElGeneral had in his small plastic bag!We were full of beans when we aroseon match day (that explains thesmelly rooms) a few of us headed tothe La Latina market and a bar crawlinto Plaza Mayor for some sunkissed beers as we watched a headlessman, Mickey Mouse, and CharlieChaplin and got blessed by Jesus –

another of the street artists.Converging on our usual Irish sportsbar our group was swelled by the Kenthouse party ravers before we werescraped into taxis for the stadium. Our Primera life was slipping away.A back page programme ad forerectile disfunction seemed an omenthat we wouldn’t stay up. The 500CDT fans made some impact on the50,000 crowd but with Hector havinga mare we slipped behind and despitea Roman goal, Forlan set up Agueroto round off a 3-1 home win. We got abit separated on a walk and taxi tripback to Madrid centre but severalbeers eased the loss and a sporadicreturn to our hotel led to x-ratedsnoring and an early rise for the4am airport taxi. Happy days.
