OUR GYM IS CLOSED :(

But not for long! We are excited to be reopening in November with much needed upgrades, including a new floor and window tinting to reduce glare.

Whats going on?During this closure, our gym floor is going to be removed and replaced with a special sealant to prevent future warping.

Did you say party?YES. The pickleball mixer held in August was great fun, and when we reopen you can expect a cele-bration with a lot more than coffee and donuts. Stay tunned for more details.

Questions?Please call (703) 228-7369

ON THE COVER: On August 11, Arlington Mill held the second in what could possibly be a future art series entitled “Origami for Beginners.” Led by Yoshi Hazen, an experienced Origami Artist from Japan, students of the class learned basic shapes as well as some of the history and culture of the art. “On rainy days, my mother would show us how to create these wonderful works of art,” explains Yoshi, “It teaches patience.” Arlington Mill Senior Center is thankful to Yoshi for volunteering her time for this wonderful class, and we are excited for more classes to come.

Arlington Mill Senior Center recently launched a new program entitled “Knitting at Night” , a social group that welcomes anyone interested in crochet, knitting, or any other needle craft. There are many knitting groups throughout the county, however none of them meet in the evening. Group members range from beginner to experienced, and volunteer Kim Luberto is happy to welcome and assist any newcomers. The group started strong on Thursday, July 5 with about 5 members, and hopes to grow. The group meets every Thursday evening at 6:30pm.

We are so excited to welcome a new Line Dancing class to its new permanent time frame of Thursday Afternoons, 1-2pm. Line Dancing is a popular recreational activity among the 55+. It is easy for beginners, lots of fun and no partner is needed. Suzie Pratt and Judi Garth will welcome and instruct, and there is no fee associated. We will see you out on the dance floor!

Arlington Mill is excited to welcome a group of Nursing Stu-dents from Georgetown. These students will spend every Thurs-day with us throughout their fall semester. Their goal is improve public health by getting to know the older adult population, and discover what is needed. Towards the end of their stay, they will provide presentations and education material that best suits our participants at Arlington Mill. In addition to their health support, we are excited for them to get to know us by participating in our programs and having some fun alone the way. Please help us in making them feel welcome to our wonderful center.

September is Senior Center Month, and we are celebrating! This year, each center will be hosting a special event. From health fairs to talent shows, there is going to be a lot to do in September. At Arlington Mill, we are celebrating with a Downsizing Fair - See Page 4 for details. Note that we will be hosting an Appraisal Road-show, which is sure to be a lot of fun, so remember to drop by!

Spanish Conversation has moved to Monday at 11:45am! The new home will be room 413.

Volunteer Spotlight

If there is a person’s name that is ever synonymous with Arlington Mill, that name would have to be Jose Paz. Since before most of us can remember, Jose has been an instru-mental part of the senior center’s programs and duties. For the past 9 years, he has been assisting with the transportation of the Social 60+ Cafe (formerly Congregate Meal Program,) helping seniors to and from taxi’s, as well as some behind the scenes key administrative tasks.

Aside from being Emma’s “Right-Hand-Man,” Jose has a number of hobbies that he has enjoyed since retiring. When he isn’t vol-unteering, you can find him in the Senior Lounge putting together puzzles with friends, and one you might not know of; his impres-sive stamp collection. But the one

thing we all know Jose is best at; tell-ing jokes. “Is your camera still work-ing?” he asks after having his photo taken. Jose is always having fun with the staff and seniors, and keeps the mood positive. Ask any staff mem-ber at Arlington Mill about him, and you are guaranteed to get a unique funny story about Jose Paz.

“I like to help out and stay active, it’s what I

enjoy most.”

Originally from Columbia, Jose has been a resident of Arlington for quite a while. Like many se-niors in the area, Jose has seen alot of change come to Arlington. One example of that change is Arling-ton Mill Senior Center itself, which Jose remembers used to be an old

Safeway building. In a couple months, Jose will be going on vaca-tion back to his hometown in Co-lumbia. “I am really going to miss him while he is gone,” says Emma Valencia, Program Coordinator at Arlington Mill, “he is the glue that keeps this place together.” We are wishing Jose a safe voyage, and we look forward to him returning to Arlington Mill Senior Center soon.

No matter what capacity, we are very thankful for all our volunteers here at Arlington Mill, because without them, we would not be able to offer such quality programs.

If your interested in finding out more information about the Social 60+ Cafe (formerly Congregate Meal) please call the main center line at 703-228-7369 or stop by the senior room.

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer? There are many oppor-tunities available here at Arlington Mill. Whether you are interested in leading a program, or would just like to roll up your sleeves and help out, please be sure to contact Nick En-glund, Center Director to express your interest.

We are now taking submissions for stories and articles for “The Mill” Se-nior Newsletter. Stories can include happenings in Arlington County, Parks and Recreation, Senior Pro-grams, and activities at Arlington Mill. If you would like to be given a specific story, we are happy to share ideas. For more information, please call (703) 228-7369.

Movies and CriticsThursday, September 21, 1-3pm

Ever wanted to be a movie critic? Now you can. Arlington Mill is now offering Movies & Critics, an interactive movie experience. Come just to enjoy the movie, or take notes during the film for a critical discussion afterwards.
