PETS WERE BLESSED - AND RAINED ON
AT OLW PET-BLESSING Umbrellas were a necessary accessory as
about a dozen OLW parishioners brought
their pets to the Church for the annual Bless-
ing of Pets October 6.
OLW Deacon Pete LeTourneau, accompanied
by his wife (and umbrella-holder) Jan
LeTourneau, administered the blessing to a
variety of dogs (and at least one cat - barely
visible in the rear of the group photo).
PARISHIONERS REMINDED OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
October is Domestic Violence Awareness
Month and OLW parishioners have been re-
minded of it by signs, such as this one on a
tree in the Court Yard last weekend.

Our Lady of the Wayside’s newest Associate Pastor,
Father Vinod Kumar, celebrated his first Mass at OLW
Sunday, October 7, less than a week after arriving in the
USA from his home in India.
Actually, Father Kumar has been seen and met by many
OLW parishioners since his arrival as he has been assist-
ing in the daily 8:30 a.m. Masses with OLW Pastor
Father Ed Fialkowski and he has been meeting parish-
ioners as he gets settled on his first trip to the United
States.
Father Kumar, who is 39, is making his first visit to the
United States. His family lives in the Village of
Vanchanagiri in the Diocese of Warangal. He has an
older sister and younger brother, both of whom are mar-
ried and reside in India.
Father Kumar was ordained in April, 2009. He was the first from his village to be ordained.
The OLW Bulletin will have a much detailed story about Father Kumar in coming weeks.
In the meanwhile, say, “hello” when you see him. He has a smile that will warm your heart.

Too Young for Breast Cancer?
KATHY O’NEILL, R.N. Parish Nurse
Cancer treatment is “less scary” than most patients thought it would be, according to a survey address ing radiation therapy fears. Ninety percent of patients responding to a
survey between 2012 and 2016 reported the actual experience of breast radiation therapy was less scary than anticipated. Nearly all of them said they initially fearful of the treatment, mainly because they previously read or heard frightening stories about side effects. Dr. Catherine Park, a radiation oncologist at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, IL, says many patients come in with fears about radiation. “This may be due to the fear of the unknown but also can be related to hearing stories from patients who were treated with older techniques,” she says, adding that some patients remember their parents experiencing radiation burns after being treated with radiation therapy years ago. Since then, radiation therapy has improved a lot. “We are treating more patients with shorter courses of radiation, which are just as effective at treating the tumor but have fewer side effects,” Dr. Park says. It’s important to start treatment with a positive attitude. Fortunately, breast radiation is generally well tolerated, and most breast patients are able to continue working during their course of treatment. Prayer: God, give me courage to face the unknown with the confidence that you will be with me, whatever may come. Amen.
By Danielle Garland for Advocate Health Care Health Enews. In June 2015, I began to notice a difference in my breasts. While doing a self-exam, I felt a lump in my left breast that didn’t appear in my right one. I’m a healthy, young adult, so I didn’t worry myself about it. Instead, I brushed it off and went about my daily routine. That September, I took a vacation to Cancun. My left breast had suddenly become excruciatingly painful, and I was having trouble sleeping at night. I took Advil for relief, but I knew something wasn’t right. In early October, I went in for a breast exam at Advocate South Suburban Hospital and left with a referral for an ultrasound. The ultrasound came back abnormal and I had a biopsy. It was that day that I received the worst news of my life: I had been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at the age of 22. My heart dropped and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. How could I possibly have breast cancer so young? Routine mammograms aren’t recommended until I reach 40. There was no history of breast cancer in my family, so how could this be? I eventually had genetic testing done, and the results showed that I have a gene mutation, which leads to an increased risk of developing cancer.
Now, I encourage young women to perform breast self-exams and talk to their doctor if anything doesn’t feel right or if the appearance of their breasts changes in any way. Many young women like myself don’t realize the many symptoms of breast cancer. Women may also consider genetic testing if they are worried. It can help you make decisions about your health before problems come up.
Cancer has no age limit, and I share my story to spread awareness. By educating women, I hope to save lives by helping them to tackle this disease during the early stages before it even develops.
Breast Cancer Treatment Doesn’t Have to be Scary
