Texas, My TexasThe third special session of the Texas Legislature is finally, sine die, over, done with, ended. Ol’ Slick Rickand company rammed malfeasant legislation that couldn’t get into law during the regular session. Notehowever, S/R did strike with a veto the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act (a.k.a. Texas Lilly Ledbetter Act), which managed to get through the legislature during the regular session. Add to this list S/R’s turning downfederal money to implement the Affordable Care Act, expand Medicaid, signing into law the most restrictiveabortion laws in the nation and ending women’s healthcare for most poor women. With the new laws ineffect, 37 women’s health clinics either will close or have closed. Within minutes of the Supreme Courtdecision gutting the Voting Act, Texas announced the implementation of the previously passed, andadjudged to be discriminatory, Voter ID law was in force. A small amount of funds have been restored toeducation, (as I remember it is $3.2 million of the $5.4 billion stripped out during the last session). Thelegislature and S/R did approve using some of the Rainy Day Fund to improve roads. God bless you, Texas!

Although it was printed in March of 2013, a copy of Texas on the Brink; A Report from the Texas LegislativeStudy Group on the State of Our State,* popped up on my screen today. This group of 28 Democraticmembers of the Texas Legislature (24 House members and 4 Senate members) published a “state of thestate” Texas journal, which contains well-documented facts (10 pages of endnotes) about Texas.

Here are a few items I would like Ol’ Slick Rick and buddies to answer about the state of Texas:

Texas Standing among the 50 states and the District of Columbia:

1. Public School (K-12) 2 in public school (K-12) enrollmentnd

31 in teachers’ salaryst

35 in percentage of revenue from the stateth

26 in pupil-teacher ratioth

50 in percentage of population with high school diplomasth

2. Women and Children 2 in the number of births nd

4 in teenage birth rateth

19 (tied) in low birth-weight babiesth

50 percentage of women getting 1 trimester prenatal careth st

2 in uninsured childrennd

1 in uninsured populationst

1 non-elderly uninsuredst

48 (tied) percent of low-income population covered by Medicaidth

46 in number of registered nursesth

23. Environment 1 in CO emissionsst

4 total amount of toxic releases into waterth

4 amount of known cancer-causing carcinogens into the airth

1 in hazardous waste generatedst

4. Democracy 47 percent of voting–age population registered to voteth

51 percent of voting–age population that votes st

These are just a few of the items I’d like explained. Once explained I want — demand — answers as to how we can fix these statistics. Electing the slimy Greg Abbott, whose donors benefitted from the CancerResearch Institute of Texas (CPRIT) money [http://us7.campaign-archive2.com/?u=824cb3251abbeba9dfdf52496&id=793ab1f988&e=12a340b173 ], orPerry-puppet Lt. Gov Dewdrop, who blatantly flaunts changing electronically produced vote date and timestamps won’t help. Though I count on Sen. Wendy Davis in the senate, I believe she could get things doneas governor.

My final thought concerns point 4: Democracy. This cannot be taken or legislated away from me, unless Ipermit it. I will vote in every election. I will do everything in my power to encourage others to vote. I willregister voters and help folks get their proper ID’s starting today. Will you join me?

The Wonderful World of Rafael!— Charles E. Ford, Jr.

Raphael Edward Cruz was born December 22, 1970, in Calgary,Alberta, Canada, but is a citizen of the United States because hismother was a U.S. citizen at the time. His parents wereworking in the oil business. Raphael attended high school inKaty, Texas, but graduated from Second Baptist High School in Houston. He graduated cum laude from Princeton, where hewon the National and North American DebatingChampionships. Rafael later graduated magna cum laude fromHarvard in preparation for an impressive career in law. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Cruz

When Rafael took the oath of office as a U.S. Senator in January 2013, he became an instant expert on the military and the qualifications for the position of Secretary of Defense. He opposed the nomination of Chuck Hagel for that position but

was publicly opposed by Sen. John McCain, AZ-R and others. Soon after, he tried to lecture Sen.Dianne Feinstein CA-D on the Second Amendment but was quickly and quietly put in his place bySen. Feinstein.

www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2013/01/07/chuck-hagel-ted-cruz/1816031/ www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/14/ted-cruz-dianne-feinstein_n_2877307.html

The bumbling start did not phase Rafael. He became an instant expert on immigration. Again he is inopposition to the majority of the Senate, the majority of the American people, and the RepublicanParty. His current “cruzade” is to defund Obamacare. Never mind the people who are uninsured, have pre-existing conditions, or no health insurance. Rafael has threatened to filibuster the continuingresolution to fund the government if it includes spending any federal money on Obamacare. Thisaction could result in a government shutdown, a serious bump in the road to the country’s economicrecovery, and create an additional burden with an increase in unemployment and assistance to theadditional unemployed.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2013/06/19/ted-cruz-oppose-immigration-reform-in-name-of-our-humanity/

http://www.politico.com/story/2013/07/ted-cruz-republicans-obamacare-94950.html

In a modus operandi typical of Republicans for the past five years of President Obama’s tenure, Rafaelhas offered no solutions to increase the number of jobs available to the unemployed, offered noproposals to bring manufacturing jobs back to this country, offered no proposals to improve thelifestyle of people living below the poverty level, or offered no proposals to reduce our militaryintervention around the world. Rafael has initiated a campaign to eliminate the IRS without a decentexplanation of why and without an explanation of how you fund any of the government without anorganization to perform the same functions as the IRS no mater what you call it.www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2013/06/03/ted-cruz-abolish-the-irs/

One would think, with credentials like Rafael’s, he would understand economics, understand governingrequires compromise, understand the value of education, especially for young children, and havecompassion for people in desperate circumstances. Unfortunately, he hasn’t lived up to his potential.

As you have probably already figured out, most of us know Raphael as Ted Cruz, the junior senatorfrom Texas. His name is Rafael Edward Cruz. Ted is a nickname. Rafael Edward “Ted” Cruz pictureshimself on the stage with self-proclaimed prophet Rick Perry. He is partially correct. He stands on thenational stage with Rick Perry and Louie Gohmert as the three stooges from Texas.

Coalition to Stop Gun Violence

A special message from a young survivor of the recent massshooting in an apartment building in Hialeah, Florida. The

shooting was carried out by a concealed handgun permitholder: (Open Letter posted 8/6/13)

Aug 1, 2013,

Dear Mr. President Barak Obama,

My name is Adriana Gabriela Gavilanes, and I am 13 years old. My family and I have been through a lot these past couple ofdays! My half brother just passed away in the Hialeah shooting. Everyone has been very supportive and helpful and I’m verygrateful for that, but still that doesn't mean we are going to gethim back.

Now the reason why I'm writing this letter is because I need youto do whatever you can to make sure that our generation hasnone of these problems. The pain that my family is goingthrough nobody should ever go through. I need you to doeverything that you can to advocate gun control and stop gunviolence. Now, I’m not saying to eliminate guns but please dosomething whether that means to make a tax or make laws. There are so many examples of gun violence; ConnecticutShooting (Sandy Hook Elementary), Aurora Shooting, HialeahShooting, Tucson Shooting, etc. Sadly, these are very commonin News Papers and News Channels these days. Everyone thinksthat if everybody has a gun then everyone is protected, but thatisn't the way everyone should think. Instead they should thinkthat if nobody has a gun no one needs a gun to defendthemselves. I know that you’re an advocate for gun control, so Idecided that I was going to write this letter to tell you that ournew and up coming generation, do care! You need to knowthat you’re not only doing this to help your country now, butalso you’re helping your country for the future. I know thatyou’ve tried passing a gun law and the Senate has turned youdown, so I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get them on ourside. If I need to go to Washington, D.C. and personally talk toeach and every member in the US Senate then that is what I willdo, and I realize it may not mean anything to them, but it meanseverything to me. It would make my family and I feel betterknowing that my brother died for a reason.

My parents taught me that everything happens for a reason andI believe this was Carlos’ reason. He loved us so much and hehad an influence on everyone that he met! He always lit up theroom. If every family felt this way about their lost loved ones weshould do something about this problem. I can’t explain howmuch everyone misses him and it doesn’t feel real, it feels like amovie. I feel as if we can just go to his house and see him again, but we can’t.

A lot of people came to America for the American dream, butwhat all these families are living today is the AmericanNightmare.

“Even the Koch Brothers Drink Water.”

— Willa B. Kulhavy

I said to cheer myself up during a discussionwith Voice editor Rachel about the droughtand the threat of a spill from the Seawaypipeline polluting our dwindling source ofwater. Two minutes later, I realized the Kochbrothers are probably never going to bedrinking from the same puddle from which Idrink. Why would the Koch brothers care ifall Texans desiccate? You can’t extractenough of anything from humans to make aprofit unless they are the Governor orAttorney General of Texas.

Later, I drove along Renner Road past theconstruction site of State Farm’s massive newoffice to come. State Farm’s employees therewill definitely drink from the same puddle asdo I and the other 1.6 million or more peoplein the North Texas Municipal Water District(NTMWD), won’t they? They’ll probablywant to flush the toilets too. Hmn.

Does a company like State Farm, whose movewill bring 5 or 6 thousand jobs and hundredsof new apartments to Richardson, ask aboutwater when they are deciding where torelocate? If State Farm asked would theRichardson folks wooing them have said,“We’re having a Texas drought with no endin sight. Lake Lavon, our primary watersource is down 9 feet, and we hope theSeaway pipeline which will be carrying tarsands crude back and forth across the Trinitydoesn’t spill here but the state of Texas hasnothing to prevent spills and no one else hasany power over pipelines?”

Does State Farm have drought insurancewhich will pay to pipe water from the Kochbrothers’ pond to Renner Road inRichardson? Or has State Farm beenpromised water rights which trump the waterrights of residential customers of the NorthTexas Municipal Water District?

Doctor, Doctor, My Legislator Says...— Charles E. Ford, Jr.

There appears to be a new path to a medicaldegree, much shorter and easier to obtain: run forcongress, particularly at the state level. You candictate medical procedures or prohibit themwithout all the fuss and expense of going tomedical school and being an intern. The best partis you don’t get all that nasty blood on you or yourclothes and you work shorter days with longervacations. Of course, as a legislator you will haveto decide for women and their doctors what theywant and what they can or cannot do. You knowthey are not capable of making those decisions forthemselves.

You may have one problem gettingelected. The approximately 1.2million women who get an abortioneach year do not appreciate yourinterference in their medicaldecisions. The millions of peoplewho depend on clinics you areforcing to close will not see thebenefit of your actions.

While we were asleep at the wheel,Republicans took over statelegislatures and many of thegovernors offices. They havecircumvented the Supreme Courtruling in Roe v. Wade by restrictinglate-term abortions, requiringunnecessary medical procedures, and placingunreasonable requirements on the facilities whichprovide healthcare primarily to women withoutany consideration of the consequences.

The recent law passed by the Texas legislature isexpected to close all but four to six of the 42abortion clinics in Texas because of unnecessaryregulations and restrictions on the facilities andprocedures. The Texas Department of StateHealth Services reports between 72,000 and82,000 abortions in Texas every year from 2000 to 2011. Many of the 70,000 plus womenrequiring abortions in the future will either travellong distances or find alternative methods ofaborting the pregnancy. Women who can’t affordhealthcare elsewhere will suffer the sameinconveniences, long waits, or long travel times.

The consequences can be predicted by the lookingat the Prohibition era and the time before Roe v.Wade. Prohibition, when the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcohol was prohibited, produced many negative affects. An undergroundculture lead by organized crime was created thatburdened the law enforcement system includingpolicemen at all levels of government and the courtsystem. Individuals were enticed to break the lawjust to have an alcoholic drink. The quality andpurity of the product suffered and the governmentlost a significant revenue source. Prohibition was a

social and economic disaster.

The restrictions on abortion will havea similar affect. Before Roe v. Wadehome remedies and back-alleyabortions were all too common. Dr.Waldo L. Fielding, MD reported inThe New York Times on some of thehome techniques used in attempt toabort pregnancies. Darning needles, crochet hooks, soap solutions, turpentine, Lysol, soap and bleachdouche, catheter and wire, slipperyelm bark, aloe, ergot of rye, and thelist goes on. These pathetic attemptsthat endanger the mother’s life don’tinclude the back-alley abortionsperformed by boyfriends orstrangers.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/03/health/views/03essa.html?pagewanted=print&_r=0

Why on earth would our legislatures want to returnto the period before Roe v. Wade and subject womento this level of frustration and danger? Do we wantmedical decisions made by politicians worried abouttheir own jobs or by a trained medical expert withtools and knowledge to analyze the individual caseand prescribe the appropriate course of action forthe individual? Do you trust Louie Gohmert tomake your medical decisions?

It will take a long time to undo the damage alreadydone but the time to start is now. Women are thelargest voting block. Women have the powerbecause women actually turn out at the polls. Women are leading the movement to show theworld the days are gone when they can be taken for granted.

Garland Democratic VoiceMore Guns in GISD

August 20, 2013 Garland, Texas Edition 47, Page 8

“GISD Implements armed security policy”“District ramps up student safety” Hannah DeClerk, editor

*The Dallas Morning News: Neighbors: “Protect and serve” Published: August 16, 2013

The Garland Independent School District school board voted to arm all school security officers. [GISDsuperintendent Bob] “Morrison said it was important to arm the guards because 31 of the district’s SchoolResource Officers ... are already armed.” At district expense, six of security officers must undergo rigoroustraining and take additional training to stay current once certified.

In January of 2013, Chris Moore (GISD director of communications) with Officer Bob Jackson (GISD security coordinator)

and Officer Joe Harm (communications director for the Garland Police Department) gave a comprehensive presentation onEmergency Preparedness in GISD for GADC members. In edition 40 of the Voice, we published theinformation given about the incredible safety plan in GISD.

In the article, “Armed Presence” in the same Neighbors section, the requirements for the new armed officers aregiven and are seemingly thorough. Maj. Nidal Hasan, the self-confessed Fort Hood shooter, certainly couldhave passed the reading comprehension written test, the 250-question test, the psychological test and shootingtest. He is a major in the Armed Forces with three service medals; a psychiatrist, having received all of hiseducation while a member of the Army. Are there any safeguards for the GISD scenario?

Where is the logic, given the measures in place and working, the futility of an officer being in the “right place atthe right time” and reports of the effects of Stand Your Ground Laws [yes, in Texas], coupled with our cash-starved schools to arm even six more men? — Rachel Baker Ford, editor

GREENVILLE, Texas — On Tuesdayboth TransCanada and thoserepresenting the Crawford familyargued whether the company haseminent domain rights for the landused for the pipeline. ...

The Crawford family takes a differentview on the pipeline being built fromCushing, Oklahoma, to the Gulf ofMexico. “If you can’t comply with allthe provisions necessary then youdon’t have an eminent domain right,”said Crawford’s attorney WendiHammond. “You can still build it, youcan still be a common carrier, but youdon’t get to take people’s land for it,you actually have to get theiragreement.”

TransCanada argues that the creationof thousands of jobs gives them theright of eminent domain, butPresident Obama recently said that thepermanent jobs would be closer to 100when construction is complete.” Full text of article at:www.kxii.com/news/headlines/Lamar-County-landow

Hello Democrats, Inform your friends andrelatives the Voter ID Law is ineffect. PLEASE recheck your

voter registration to see if it “really” matchesyour photo ID exactly. I checked mine abouttwo months ago, and my driver’s license has mymaiden name. My current, up-to-date voterregistration card does not. I have reapplied fora new, revised voter card, so I can vote at thenext election. Please do it now, it will soon be time to vote! : ) http://votetexas.gov/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/VoteTexas-11x17.pdf
