President’s Message

Arizona Greyhound Rescue welcomes the New Year and new opportunities in 2013!

It is hard to believe 2012 is over. AGR

saw 45 dogs adopted into responsible forever homes. These adoptions would

not have been possible without you - our adopters, donors, grant

organizations, supporters, foster families, home checkers, adoption coordinators, fundraising support team, meet and greet team, thank you card writers, record keeper, communications team,

advisory board members, grant writers, animal care team, kennel volunteers, volunteer coordinators, and board members. You all

have our undying gratitude. 2012 event highlights include about 150 clean dogs from 2 dog

washes, United Days of Caring, Animal Fair, Earthday parade, Girl Scouts, Second Saturdays, Seize the Day, Holiday Open House, and a new wine fundraiser.

AGR had the first fundraiser of its kind, Spay-getti and No Balls. A fun time was had by all and a delicious spaghetti dinner was

served by Trident Grill to raise money for the hounds. It was a successful fundraiser and we look forward to doing it again this year.

AGR also participated in fundraiser sponsored by TROT (Therapeutic Riding of Tucson) and the Stuff the Hummer toy

drive with Team Up for Tucson. All hounds are dear to our hearts, but there are 2 very special

hounds that were placed into 2 special programs.

Mac was AGR’s first greyhound placed as a service dog. He was placed in a program called Operation Wolfhound, who trains sighthounds as psychiatric service dogs for veterans diagnosed

with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stess Disorder). Mac was a candidate

for this program because he needs human companionship all the time, which is a great match to a veteran who needs the security

of a service dog to alleviate the emotional distress that comes with PTSD.

Mac has been successfully matched with a Vietnam veteran. This veteran could not leave his house due to his PTSD. Now that Mac lives with him, he is able to leave his home. Together, Mac and his

veteran will be able to get back to a healthy way of living.

Mr. Fry is the other special hound. He has been through therapy dog training, assisted by an AGR volunteer. This means he provides comfort to those who spend time with him. Like Mac, Mr.

Fry has separation anxiety and requires human companionship most of the time. Mr. Fry’s story started when AGR was put in contact with Sunrise Senior Living, who were looking for a resident

dog. Turn to the “Community Involvement” section of this newsletter to get an update on Mr. Fry.

AGR will continue to receive sighthounds and place them in the best possible forever home, whether through adoptions to conventional homes or in special programs.

Want a seek peek into 2013? How about Hounds vs. Horses?! This is a bowling fundraiser planned with TROT. Winner gets

bragging rights and a trophy! Check AGR’s online calendar, Facebook, Twitter, and your emails for the upcoming events.

AGR will continue to find homes for our lovable hounds, raise funds for their medical care, and actively engage our community.

Wishing you a wonderfilled, healthy, and prosperous New Year!

Roofully yours,

Jean

Our Valuable Volunteers

AGR was fortunate to have 2 volunteer coordinators help us in 2012. Sarah Wassermann and Erin Carpenter worked to involve our volunteers and organized our successful events.

Erin took over when Sarah moved to California and did a great job with both of our dog washes and fall/winter events. Erin and her husband will be moving from Tucson soon, so we will

be looking for another volunteer coordinator. AGR appreciates the time and effort Sarah and Erin gave to help us, and we wish them nothing but the best.

Volunteer Coordinator

In 2013, we are welcoming Tracy Wunderlich as a new adoption coordinator. Tracy adopted Rory, now Ozzie, last year. With her help, we can find more adoptive homes for our hounds.

Welcome to the team, Tracy!

Adoption Coordinator

While our hounds are waiting for their forever families, some stay at At-Home Kennels. We count on our kennel volunteers to give them some play time. The hounds enjoy running and

playing outside. Thank you Bob Mittan, Bob Weigel, Marsha & Kenny, Karen & Jim Carson, At-Home staff, and all our kennel volunteers.

Kennel Crew

Lynn Tonkin has graciously volunteered to be our merchandise coordinator. She adopted Ebony last year and co-owns borzois for Operation Wolfhound. Lynn has been very supportive of AGR

and we welcome her with open arms!

7 Community Involvement AGR is powered by 100% love for the hounds by our volunteers,

sponsors, and community supporters. With this teamwork, AGR is able to find adoptive homes, receive help from the community, as well as give back to our community. It takes a village to help the hounds!

In late 2012, AGR was put in contact with Sunrise Senior Living about a resident dog,

and AGR suggested Mr. Fry. Mr. Fry was introduced to the staff, as well as the residents at the facility. Everybody that

met Mr. Fry loved him, and he loved all the attention. It was a match!

Mr. Fry has visited Sunrise on a regular basis since and soon had a routine. He would go down the hallway and say hello to his favorite person, Dr. Edgar, before going into the backyard to greet the residents sitting in their patios. He would then go to the lobby to meet 2 more of

his friends, before checking the hair salon for anyone that he missed. Mr. Fry would then roam the hallways and poke his head into the apartments to say “hello”. Lastly, he would go downstairs and share the

dog bed with Sunny, the receptionist’s therapy dog. Mr. Fry always has a perpetual smile on his face while there!

Sunrise and AGR are currently working on finalizing Mr. Fry’s living arrangements. Mr. Fry already has a long list of people

volunteering for his morning walk, as well as visits to a nearby dog park. He will receive training to keep him away from

the front door, as well as keeping out of the dining area.

There will be an open house scheduled at Sunrise and AGR invites everyone to come see Mr. Fry’s new place, meet the friendly staff, and experience what Sunrise has to offer. Date

to be announced and more details to come! AGR is excited about this new opportunity for Mr. Fry and we can’t wait

to see him move in as a permanent resident!

As Members of the AGR Family...

We like to keep track of our adopters, the name of their fur kids at the time they were adopted, or if a beloved fur kid has crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

If you have moved, or changed your email address or phone number, please contact Terry Baker who maintains our records and provide him with this information. When a greyhound is lost or found, it is vital to have the most updated contact information in order to locate the owners. Don’t wait until your hound is lost to find out there is no way to find its way back home.

Available Dogs Spotlight

YoYo

Color: Red Brindle Age: 2 years

Cats: No Small-Dogs: No Small-Children: Unknown

Yo is a sensitive, sweet boy! His mellow nature will calm the most frenzied day. Yo seeks comfort from his human companions and will do well in a home that can nurture and grow him into a confident boy!

RaiderRaider

Color: Black Age: 3 years

Cats: No Small-Dogs: No Small-Children: Unknown

Raider loooves his toys! His favorites are rubbery and bouncy. He does a celebratory romp when he wins at the game of tug. Raider is a boy looking for someone to play with.

AshleyAshley

Color: Black Age: 5 years

Cats: No Small-Dogs: No Small-Children: No

Ashely is an affectionate dog and only wants to be by your side. She loves hugs and will nuzzle your arm for one. She will give a growl at strangers, only to protect the people that she loves. Ashley has the sweetness of a greyhound, but also the instincts of a pointer - so a home without small animals would be the best.

11 Update to Orbit’s Ordeal Orbit, or “Orbie” as his foster family affectionately calls him, has had a

whirlwind of a year! Orbit came into the AGR family in June 2012, looking relatively healthy.

Orbit developed happy tail shortly afterwards, and was put into foster care. While his tail was healing, his foster family noticed that he would eat like a horse, have many accidents in the house, pee for long

periods of time, and drink excessively. He was evaluated and diagnosed with diabetes inspidus. The medicine prescribed to him helped with his bathroom breaks, but highlighted Orbit’s other odd

behavior - which xrays would reveal parts of a remote, bits of wood, and other non-edible items in his belly. Orbit was eating everything!

Orbit ate 6 cups a day, but was still loosing weight and his coat was in terrible shape. The doctors were baffled and Orbit went through a gamut of tests, but all came back normal. Finally, Orbit was diagnosed as having inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS) and put on a

prescription diet. The food worked wonders! Orbit’s coat was transformed and he was looking and feeling healthy again.

Orbit was able to overcome his ordeal with the love from his foster family, support from donors like you, and the vets who monitored his progress. Without your help, Orbit would still be in pain - battling

untreated diseases that would have wreaked his body and surely decreased his quality of life.

Please donate and make a positive difference in a hound’s life today.

Thank You !
