Become involved run or nominate for an office

This article was emailed to me by Ralph Fern from Homewatch caregivers It has some great advise that Irsquod like to share it with you It was written by Harvey Mackay

A few months ago I wrote a column about what they dont teach you in school From the positive re-sponses and suggestions I received it became quite apparent that formal education is a good beginning but real world experience is necessary as well to get ahead The prior list included concepts such as taking respon-sibility for promoting yourself maintaining a positive attitude the importance of a smile and handling rejec-tion Heres my additional list

Life isnt fair - How many times do you hear this phrase especially from young people Its true and you still have to deal with it

Think outside the box - There is no substitute for creativity Take stock of your usual practices and look for new and better ways to do things When something has been done the same way over a long period of time sometimes its a good sign that its being done the wrong way

Exercise is good for you - Ive always been active in sports but one of the best decisions I ever made was when I became a runner over 50 years ago Being in shape keeps my energy high and my attitude positive Studies show that companies that promote exercise have decreased absenteeism greater productivity better performance and improved morale

Be nice to everyone - Its nice to be important but more important to be nice You dont know who your top customers will be five years from now or where you will be in ten years You may have a fancy title but you will always need help from the people around you

You do not get what you want you get what you negotiate - One of the skills that has made the biggest difference in my career is negotiating It applies to selling purchasing hiring firing expanding downsizing and every other phase of business you can name

Good manners never go out of style - Whether its responding to an invitation answering the phone or email or showing simple respect we expose our own weaknesses when we display thoughtless or boorish be-havior One of the nastiest names that someone can call you is rude Especially because it doesnt take any more effort to be polite - and it takes a whole lot of work to restore your good reputation

Visualization I believe that visualization is one of the most powerful means of achieving personal goals Many people especially athletes and celebrities have discovered the amazing power of visualization and have used it to enhance their careers and achieve their goals and dreams They visualize that they are not quitters They will not allow circumstances to keep them down If seeing is believing visualizing is achieving

Practice humility Humility is becoming a lost art - in an era of self-promotion and making sure you get all the credit you deserve Humility is not difficult to practice It doesnt involve downplaying your achievements It doesnt mean that you wont be recognized for your contributions It does mean that you realize that others have been involved in your success and you are prepared to be involved in theirs

Encouragement is oxygen for the soul - People love us not for who we are but for how we make them feel People appreciate sincere recognition and praise People tend to live up to the recognition they receive Encouraging words have tremendous power

Enthusiasm is the spark that ignites lives - If you arent excited about hitting the pavement every day it will show in your performance Pros are always enthusiastic about doing their job to the best of their ability

Teamwork is not just important in sports -There are few human endeavors that are truly solo acts I have been on all sorts of teams and those that yielded the most successful results recognized the contributions of those at every level A capable team captain plays on the strengths of all the team members - and under-stands the value of a well-delivered pep talk

Mackays Moral An old dog can learn new tricks and a new dog can learn old tricks

Mackays Moral An old dog can learn new tricks and a new dog can learn old tricks

Lessons They Donrsquot Teach you in School

drums ldquoShe can keep a better beat than merdquo says Leslie Anne

Leslie Activities staff at the Village Elsa enjoys watching resi-

dents play pool down in the pub and has good pointers for

them She speaks her mind and has a quick sense of humor

During World War II she was a ldquoGray Ladyrdquo a reference to American Red Cross volunteers who

assisted with personal services to those in need

Elsa is a late riser and loves her sweets In fact a flyer was put out by Leslie asking staff and resi-

her dining table she helps with two other residents by pounding on the table with her silverware

or ringing on her glass to get them to eatrdquo

Elsarsquos advice is to ldquobe happy smile love everyone and have a good sense of humorrdquo ldquoeat

sweetsrdquo and of course ldquonever stop chasing the firemenrdquo

Elsa has received over 350 cards from our local residents in Fountain Hills fellow residents at

the Village our sister communities of Senior Lifestyle Properties throughout the US and other As-

sending Elsa ldquo105rdquo birthday cardsrdquo says Leslie Anne ldquoI appreciate the outpouring of wishes and

the fantastic responserdquo Elsa loves the handmade cards especially the ldquoKitty Catrdquo ones

Tired of the pre-cut foam crafts from the craft store or cheap crafts from those mail or-der catalogs Why not try Pinterest There are plenty of new up-to-date and easy craft ideas

For those of you that donrsquot know what is Pinterest it is a virtual pin board that lets you organize and share the things you like on the internet (A board is where you organize your pins by topic) Everything is image-based so its great for visual people such as myself You can pin and search for ideas for special events holidays crafts hobbies recipes etc (the topics are truly endless) You can even search the certain categories such as ldquoActivity Directorrdquo or ldquoNursing Homerdquo and find wonderful ideas This is a great way to find new activity ideas and to re-invent your activity calendar I encourage you to try it out
