Sunni with limited showing won her second major under Breeder/Judge Barbara O’Neill. Sunni has represented Borzoi at the last two AKC Meet the Breeds events in New York City during Westminster. With her bubbly and sunny personality, she has been one of the favorites for both kids and adults. One young child informed me she wanted to return to the event to hopefully see Sunni again!

Started in 2016 was the offering of an OVERALL #1 dog in rally. Same rules apply to rally as to obedience. A minimum of 3 scores are needed to be the OVERALL #1 dog. All of the dogs scores from rally are averaged so if a dog competes in more than level all of his scores are rolled into one. Just like obedience, only 1 score is required to be #1 in any given class. PLEASE NOTE that my e-mail addy as listed under coordinator in the membership book is incorrect as it is missing an ‘l’ on the end of my name.

BCOA Trophy Supported Entry Gonzales, Louisiana
We had a nice turn-out (majors in both sexes for 3 of the 4-day cluster) with fanciers who hailed from TX, LA, MS, AL, FL, TN, and MI. A couple of Borzoi finished championships or grands. It was especially fun to gather for a traditional Louisiana meal Saturday evening. OFA Cardiac Screening – The Advanced Cardiac Databaseby Nancy Hopkins
Those of us who have been doing OFA cardiac screen-ings on our dogs are familiar with the one-page Application for the Congenital Cardiac
Database and the auscultation that was required. As of April 2016, there is a new cardiac database offered by OFA: the Advanced Cardiac Database (ACA) which will eventually replace the old single-page application and the Congenital Cardiac Database. The ACA will include certifica-tion for both congenital cardiac diseases as well as adult-onset cardiac diseases. It is important to understand how the ACA compares to the Congenital Cardiac Database so you understand how this change will impact you and your dogs.
Before we compare the two different types of OFA clearances it is important to under-stand the difference between congenital cardiac disease and adult-onset (develop-mental) cardiac disease. Congenital cardiac diseases are those that are present at birth
and may worsen with age. They include malformation of any of the heart’s cham-bers or valves, or the blood vessels going from and coming into the heart. Examples of congenital cardiac defects include: pat-ent ductus arteriosus (PDA), pulmonic stenosis (PS) and subaortic stenosis (SAS). Adult-onset (developmental) cardiac dis-eases are those that are seen later in life. These include endocardiosis (mitral valve disease/myxomatous valve degeneration), dilated cardiomyopathy and arrhythmo-genic right ventricular cardiomyopathy.
Based on the Borzoi health survey at OFA (https://www.ofa.org/about/educational-resources/health-surveys) we see Borzoi suffer from both congenital cardiac defects and adult-onset cardiac disease. This means that both types of OFA cardiac certifica-tion—congenital and adult-onset—have value for Borzoi breeders.
OFA considers a careful clinical evaluation with auscultation of the heart as ideal for
congenital heart defect screening due to its low price and convenience. Auscultation is useful because almost all congenital heart problems commonly found in dogs are associated with murmurs. One will miss a portion of congenital malformations because they are sometimes hard to hear. Some dogs will also be found to have a murmur that with further investigation will be found to be physiologic (functional or innocent) murmurs. No dog should be con-sidered to have a congenital malformation based on auscultation alone. Any abnormal finding should always be further investi-gated with an echocardiogram to identify the nature of the murmur and its relevance to your dog.
However, once a dog has passed an auscul-tation and received an OFA congenital car-diac clearance through the ACA, the dog should move to evaluations focusing on adult onset diseases. OFA certification for congenital cardiac defects is not sufficient

This was Kachina Story Book Love, “Desiree”, owned by Carol Enz. She finished her NOFCA Coursing Championship (CC) and Courser of Merit (CM) on December 3, 2017. Make a PlanThe best way to protect your pets from the effects of a fire is to include them in your family plan. This includes having their own disaster supplies kit as well as arranging in advance for a safe place for them to stay if you need to leave your home.
Invest in Flameless CandlesThese candles contain a light bulb rather than an open flame, and take the danger out of your pet knocking over a candle. Cats are notorious for starting fires when their tails
turn over lit candles.
Smoke Alarms Save LivesAccording to the US National Fire Protection Association, the risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.
The United States NFPA code requires smoke detectors on every habitable level and within the vicinity of all bedrooms. Habitable levels include attics that are tall enough to allow access.
Extinguish Open FlamesPets are generally curious and will investigate cooking appliances, candles, or even a fire in your fireplace. Ensure your pet is not left unattended around an open flame and make sure to thoroughly extinguish any open flame before leaving your home.
Practice Your EvacuationWhen you practice your
escape plan, practice taking
your pets with you. Train them
to come to you when you call.
In the event of a disaster, if
you must evacuate, the most
important thing you can do
to protect your pets is to
evacuate them too. A well
trained and socialized pet will

Much to the relief of exhibitors and Meet the Breed participants, the AKC National Championship returned to its regular venue at the North/South Concourse of Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center. No parking drama! No blistered feet from
round-trip half-mile hikes between vehicles and ringside! No fights in the grooming area! Even the blue carpet was back in many rings. In its 17th year, the ANC drew record entries with the addition of yet another event: the inaugural AKC Royal Canin National All-Breed Puppy and Junior Stakes, held on Friday before regular breed judging. Although no Borzoi were entered by BCOA members in this competi-tion, member Patti Neale judged the individual hound breeds.
The Invitational Finals for the AKC National Owner-Handled series were also held on Friday. Hearty congratulations to the seven BCOA members whose Borzoi qualified for this competitive event! Unfortunately none were able to attend this year but Stephanie Shelton Steele, owner/handler of the NOHS Finals BOB winner GCH Sylvan Dreamweaver, has applied for BCOA membership.

Beginning on Friday and throughout the weekend, BCOA member Lou Avant and Whimsy (Ch Hemlock Hollow’s Journey to Rule Sixty-Two, BN, RN, JC, AX, AXJ, CGCA, TKA, DJ, DN) burned up the obstacle course during the National Agility Invitational with qualifying scores each day. The multi-talented Whimsy also earned an invitation to the Dock Diving Finals held concurrently (although Lou decided to keep her dry for the weekend). Bred by BCOA members Christine Danker and Lorrie Scott (by Ch Aashtoria Aruzia Java Chip x GCG Ch Borscana Melissa Loveletter, BN, RE, OAJ, OJP, JC) Whimsy earned the coveted BCOA #1 Versatility award for 2016 by competing suc-cessfully in conformation, obedience, rally, lure coursing and agility. According to Lou, on a dare, a friend asked that she prove Whimsy’s true versatility by entering her in a dock diving trial. Proving that she’ll do anything asked of her, Whimsy finished as the #3 Dock Diving Borzoi for 2017. Before turning three years of age, Whimsy earned
invitations to two AKC national performance events in 2017: agility and dock diving. She has also earned an invitation to the 2018 AKC Agility Invitational. Currently she is the #1 Agility Borzoi in the coun-try in both speed and MACH point rankings. When not competing, Whimsy loves hiking and playing in her lake. She also has a cameo appearance in the soon-to-be-released movie Pitch Perfect 3. Lou adds:
“The joy Whimsy exhibits as she continues to per-form and learn new things is contagious, making her an incredibly fun dog with which to share a life.”
After the competitions, we set up our eye-catching BCOA Meet the Breeds booth and by late Friday evening we were ready to
welcome Borzoi and guests. The stunning larger-than-life photos by Patti Neale attracted attention from all passing by but as always, the Borzoi were the major attraction.
Borzoi breed judging, under William Sahloff, began Saturday at a civilized 12:30pm, allowing plenty of grooming time for handlers to make their Borzoi shine. Despite the fact that BCOA member

At what age will an OFA certification be awarded?

for clearing a dog as a breeding prospect due to the significant presence of adult-onset cardiac disease in our breed.
According to the Borzoi health survey at OFA, the top adult-onset cardiac disease impacting Borzoi is cardiomyopathy. Endocardiosis may be a significant issue for our breed as well, though this is not clear from the statistics. A review of rec-ommendations for large-breed dogs, that are known to have a high incidence of cardiomyopathy, shows that echocardiog-raphy is recommended for screening breed-ing animals, usually starting at the ages of three or four years. Because of this, echo-cardiography should be sought whenever
possible for screening Borzoi for adult-onset cardiac disease, as auscultation alone will be insufficient.
The benefit of the new ACA will be better data collection to support breeders’ efforts toward improving Borzoi health. One improvement is the triplicate format of the ACA application. One of the pages will be mailed to OFA by the cardiologist whether or not the owner elects to send in the form for OFA certification. This is critical as the statistics provided by the Congenital Cardiac Database is incomplete because it depends on owner mail-in. Also, the ACA application provides much more information
about both the auscultation findings and the examination details of the echocardiogram. This improves the quality of information gathered for the benefit of Borzoi.

BOS and Best Bred by Exhibitor went to BCOA member Kay Cassella with Ben (GChS Konza-Plum Creek Bugatti at Elance). Ben’s half-brother Max (GCh Sylvan Dreamweaver, JC CGC), owned by BCOA applicant Stephanie Steele, was awarded Select Dog and all three of member Jean Durdin’s Specials received recognition. Select Bitch was awarded to Jean’s Valentina (Ch Crown Jewel Valentina of Majenkir CA) with Awards of Merit presented to Valentina’s dam, Tatiana (GChP Crown Jewel Tatiana) as well as to her grandsire, Nicholas (GChG Promises Crown Jewel Nicholas). Henri Goldner’s lovely
“Flame,” (GChB Echovesna’s Keeper Of The Flame). rounded out the BCOA member entries.
All BCOA member-owned Borzoi awarded this year boast impressive show records. BOS Ben, according to Kay, easily finished his AKC championship from the puppy class and has gone on to a consistent win-ning record, quickly attaining his Canadian Ch, then returning to the US to embark on a Specials career and reaching the GChS level in record time. Ben’s notable wins, in addition to his recognition at this year’s National Championship, include a Best in Futurity win at his first BCOA National Specialty, BOS at the National Specialty in 2017, BOS at the Westminster Kennel Club in 2018 and multiple group wins and placements. “Team Ben” (Cherie Hunchak, Robert Bates and Kay Cassella) could not be more pleased with his success!
Jean Durdin’s Borzoi have also regularly attained recognition throughout their show careers, particularly Tatiana, the #1 ranked Borzoi all systems in 2015 and 2016. In 2015 she also won the Breed at Westminster and is the first Platinum GCh Borzoi bitch in history. Tatiana is also a successful producer, with an up-and-coming litter that includes one grand champion, two champions, one dog only three singles shy of the Ch title and one with a hound group win at only eight months old. Tatiana’s daughter, the young Valentina, finished her championship in a flash and at barely 18 months of age was consistently awarded Select Bitch over mature competi-tion throughout this year’s Orlando circuit. Last but not least, the multi-group placing Nicholas, sire to Tatiana and grandsire to
Valentina, has also clearly made his mark. Nicholas was ranked among the Top 5 Borzoi in 2013 and 2014, as well as in the top
10 Borzoi for 2016 and 2017. He is a sire of an all-Grand Champion first litter and only 36 points away from his Platinum Grand.
While not in the ribbons this year, Henri Goldner’s Flame also has a notable show record with multiple BOB wins, hound group placements and specialty recognition. With only moments to
spare following Borzoi Breed judging, we made it to the Bred-By-Exhibitor Hound ring just in time to watch Kay present
Ben for examination by judge Dr. James W. Edwards. In this extremely competitive group, we were thrilled to see our BCOA representa-tive awarded a Group 2 over many of the top hounds in the country. Certainly a breeder’s dream come true to be honored at such a pres-tigious event.

We had 10 Borzoi to represent our wonderful breed. The Aristocrat is the official publication of the Borzoi Club of America and is published quarterly in order to inform, educate and entertain the members by providing historical and current information on the Breed and issues affecting the well-being of our Borzoi.
Statement of Intent:It is the intent that the Aristocrat:• Serve as a record of BCOA and its activities• To provide a convenient forum for the reporting of statistics on the accomplishments of the members in conformation and performance
