1 Ramps Are Rolling In By: Sarah Ingerson Through the gracious assistance from volunteers of First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Oswego, and funding through a grant from Senator Wright, ARISE has been able to in- stall 8 ramps so far this year. FUMC volunteers have met almost every Thursday since May 3 at the church to construct and prefabricate sections of the ramp. The first ramps were installed in Fulton on May 5 and May 12. Both of the ramps were a big success. June was also a suc- cessful month with four ramps built and installed this month. One in Oswego, one in Central Square, and two in Fulton. Two ramps were installed in July, one in Oswego, and the other in Parish. As for August, so far two more ramps are scheduled to be built and installed in Parish and Fulton. Depending on the amount of fund- ing that is left over, we are anticipating building another two ramps for our consumers. ARISE has already secured funding for next year’s ramp project through another grant by Senator Wright. We are hopeful that we will again be able to build another 10 ramps with the assis- tance of FUMC. Without these ramps, many of our consumers would not be able to leave their homes, or come home from facilities and hospi- tals. The ramps allow individuals to be able to live independently and stay in their homes which without the ramps would not be pos- sible. The Big Dipper: A Shining Star in Fulton By: Rhiannon Mulverhill

As a person with a disability, I have a strong determination to educate businesses and the community about accessibility issues. Recently I paid a visit to a local business who would need no education. The Big Dipper Ice Cream Parlor in Fulton, NY is ran by Pat and Dean Burdick. From top to bottom, this new establishment was great! Parking was fully accessible. There are two desig-nated spots in the front of the parlor and next to the ramp that are accessible. If you are or-dering ice cream outside, the counter is at a low level for individuals who utilize a wheel-chair for mobility, like myself. Although there are not automatic doors, they are easy to open and the staff are eager to help you as you come in the door. The counter inside is again at wheelchair level. The space is open and easy to maneuver around. The bathroom was above and beyond ADA (America Disabilities Act) standards. The area is large enough to maneu-ver around comfortably Even the soap dispensers and paper towels were at an accessible level. Above all, the accessibility was superb. The staff were courteous and friendly and the ice cream was GREAT! So if your looking for an accessible tasty treat and your in the area, I suggest The Big Dipper Ice Cream Parlor.

Come Visit the Learning Tree Learning Tree is an opportunity for individuals 18 years and older who have an MR/DD diagnosis to learn new skills. Indi-viduals that have participated in the past have experienced learning new skills, socialization, and have developed peer re-lations while getting out in to the community. Individuals have the option of choosing what they would like to partici-pate in based on the class schedule. The Learning Tree holds three semesters a year: Spring, Summer and Fall. The next one will be held in the Fall (approx. October.) So be sure that you are looking for fun and exciting learning opportunities in our brochure. We hope to see you there.

Emergency Preparedness

Topic at

Hearing Loss Support Group

Emergency preparedness should be on the minds of everyone. At the August meeting of the Hearing Loss Support Group, Terry Bennett, who works for the Emergency Manage-ment Office of Oswego County, will talk about what information might be helpful to know if you have a hearing loss or live with someone who has. Most information is distributed through the radio, which not everyone can hear. Find out what options are open to you. Please come to the presentation on August 8 at 6:30pm at ARISE in Oswego.

For those attending the hearing loss support group we have a loop system assisting those with a T switch on their hearing aid. In addition we just purchased pocket talkers, which may be used by individuals who need the sound amplified that do not have a T switch. They are lightweight portable units that feature a large easy—to—use volume control, full range frequency response, and are compatible with telecoil coupler, or direct audio input hearing aids.

Recently four ARISE employees attended a training by Don Meyer regarding Sib-shops. Sibshops celebrates the contributions made by brothers and sisters of children with special needs as well as provide peer support and education in a recreational setting. Sib-shops are recognized in 8 countries and there are currently over 200 Sibshops worldwide demonstrating the commitment and expertise and curriculum these workshops are known for. Plans have already begun to launch a Sibshop in the Oswego area beginning in Sep-tember meeting every other month. Each Sibshop would consist of 15 siblings in grades 3—8 with Kearie Alguire, Steve Wilton, and Vanessa Simpson facilitating the workshops. Lisa Seguin, ARISE, as well as Donna Jones from Parents of Special Children (PSC) will work collaboratively and to assist with planning and publicizing the workshops. IF you have any questions or interest in the program feel free to contact Lisa Seguin at 342-4088 ext. 208.

Celebrate July! By: Sabine Ingerson

July is not just Harborfest, but also a time to celebrate the anniversary of the Ameri-cans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Oswego County issued a proclamation affirming their support of the ADA. This year Russ Johnson, Chairman of the Legislature presented the proclamation at the July meeting of the Oswego County Visually Impaired luncheon.

Geary, Laura Smith, Betty Jaekle)

Another reason to celebrate was the assurance that the Call-N-Ride service will continue. This is made possible through a $16,000 donation from Constellation Energy to ARISE on behalf of the Vision Network. This committee has been instrumental in advocating for ser-vice for those with visual impairments especially the Call-N-Ride service.

Diabetic Recipe

Red, White, and Blueberry Tart

Filling: 1/2 c. Splenda granular 2 tbsp. corn starch 1 pinch salt 1c. Reduced fat milk 2 lg. eggs beaten lightly 4 oz. Neufchatel cheese 1tsp. vanilla Glaze: 1 tsp. flavored gelatin 1/2c. water 1 1/2 tbsp. Splenda granular 1 1/2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1 pint fresh strawberries 1/2-3/4 fresh blueberries For the crust, preheat oven to 425 degrees, fit the crust into a 9-inch tart pan. Trim the edges to top of tart pan, line with foil and fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake 10 minutes; remove the weights and foil, continue baking an additional 5 minutes or until crust is golden. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack. For the filling, combine the Splenda, cornstarch, salt, milk and eggs in a heavy saucepan; wisk until the mixture is smooth. Over medium heat, bring to a boil while stirring constantly; reduce heat to low and cook for 1 minute or until mixture thickens. Beat the Neufchatel cheese until light and fluffy and gradually add the hot custard mixture to beaten cheese, beating until well blended. Stir in the vanilla and spoon filling into cooled tart shell. Lightly press plastic wrap on pie surface; allow to cool completely. While the filling is cooling, sprinkle the gelatin over cold water in a small saucepan; stir and let stand 1 minute. Stir in the Splenda and lemon juice; bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until gelatin dissolves. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Cut the strawberries in half and arrange in 2 rows from the outside of tart in, spoon the blueberries in the center. Lightly spoon the cooled glazed over the berries, chill for a minimum of 1 hour before serving.
