• The year 2013 is for dealing with rebellion, resistance and revolution.• The devil is bent on fueling divisions, disagreements & dissensions.•We must therefore emphasize reconciliation.•Women will play a vital role in dealing with rebellion & facilitating the ministry of reconciliation

•Why? • They are vulnerable to sexual violence & neglect during conflicts.•By 1998 there were 20 million refuges in the world. • 80% were women• There are an estimated 35 million refugees in the world by 2010.

•Nearly 70% of the world refugees is in Africa & the Middle East.• 43.3 million - Forcibly Displaced People. (FDP)

•Most refuge camps were death camps for women.•While all refuges are vulnerable girls & women are more.•During flights they are usually•Physically abused & raped by border guards, the army, bandits & male refuges.

• The facilities in camps are not convenient for women• In camps where men are in charge of food women are blackmailed to get food in exchange for their bodies.•More than 70% of women in police or military custody are sexually abused (Rights of Women p.52)

• Police records show that cases of domestic violence have been on the rise in Uganda: •More than two thirds of Ugandan women experience violence from their partners • 68% were harassed or beaten by their partners in 2006.• This included: beating, pushing, dragging, forced sex, arm twisting, threatening, insulting & choking

• Rural women suffered more violence than urban women. • Uneducated women suffered more than their educated colleagues. • 7 in 10 women agree that it is justified for women to be beaten by their husbands when they make certain mistakes. • indicating that women in Uganda generally accept violence, since traditionally, a woman must be submissive to her husband.

• The most accepted reasons for wife battery, according to the report, are neglecting children (56%) and going out without informing the husband (52%). • Acceptance of wife beating was found to

be common in the rural areas, while in the urban areas, women were generally against it. • According to sociologists, it begins with

dependence on a man. “When he is the one providing everything, you barely have a say on anything. And a no to anything means a slap, or two,” says Laura Aryijuka, a sociologist & counselor at Kyambogo University
