Grande’s music is generally pop and R&B, and has el-ements of funk, dance and hip hop.[48][141] Grande saidshe grew up mainly listening to urban pop and 90s mu-sic.[141][142] Her music was originally aimed at young au-diences with the bubblegum pop single “Put Your HeartsUp,” which was recorded amid plans for a teen pop debutalbum.[32] Yours Truly is described as being half a “throw-back” to the R&B music of the 1990s; Grande describesthe second half as “something that is very unique and veryspecial that I've sort of written” that is completely orig-inal. In summation of the record, she stated: “So halfof it is a throwback and like very familiar feeling, feelgood, and then half of it is something that I've createdthat’s sort of special and unique and refreshing and won-derful and I love it.”[143] Her doo-wop-inspired debut al-bum was complimented for recreating the R&B “vibe andfeel of the 90s” with the help of nineties R&B hit makerBabyface.[144] The follow-upMy Everything (2014) is de-

Mariah Carey, one of Grande’s vocal influences

scribed as an evolution from her first album with a newsound exploring EDM and electropop genres.[80]

“I love Mariah Carey. She is literally my favorite humanbeing on the planet. And of course Whitney [Houston] aswell. As far as vocal influences go, Whitney and Mariahpretty much cover it. I love Fergie as well. She’s just sofun and passionate. I love that she raps as well. Like, shehas a fantastic voice and she can belt Gs and As and shedoesn't have to do it all the time. She just has swag and Ithink that’s really cool.”— Grande, on her musical influences.[145]

Grande has cited Cuban-American star Gloria Estefan asthe person who inspired her to pursue a career in the mu-sic industry, after Estefan complimented a performanceshe saw Grande give on a cruise ship when she was eightyears old.[146] Grande cites Whitney Houston as a majorinfluence on her career, stating that Houston has inspiredher “endlessly” since she was a child.[147] Grande also de-scribed Houston as the reason why she began singing, aswell as citing Brandy Norwood as an influence, noting her“riffs” in particular.[148]

She has also cited Madonna, Destiny’s Child, Fergie,Christina Aguilera, India.Arie, Imogen Heap, and AmyWinehouse as influences.[142][145][149][150] Grande’s de-but album was inspired by artists like Amy Winehouse,Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, ChristinaAguilera, Katy Perry, and Madonna, with unreleasedcollaborations with SkyBlu of LMFAO, 3OH!3, Kool

Kojak, and Pebe Sebert.[151][152][153] She named Keys,Carey and Beyoncé as female artists she tried to chan-nel during the three years it took to create the record.[154]

Grande described Imogen Heap as one of her influences, noting Heap’s “intricate” song structure. She also citesIndia.Arie as an influence, calling Arie’s voice “heaven”and praising her lyrical content.[148] She has described ac-tress and singer Judy Garland as being one of her child-hood influences, stating that she grew up watching andlistening to Garland, as well as praising her ability to tell“a story when she sings”.[148] Grande has stated that BigSean, whom she dated from 2014 to 2015, is her favoriterapper and collaborator.[141][155]

3.2 Voice

Grande possesses a four-octave and a semitone sopranovocal range,[156][157] and the whistle register.[158] With therelease of her debut album, Yours Truly (2013), Grandehas been deemed the “mini Mariah Carey” and the “newMariah Carey” by critics because of her wide vocal range, sound and musical material.[159][160][161] Speaking on thecomparisons, Julianne Escobedo Shepherd of Billboardwrote that both Carey and Grande “got the talent tolet their vocals do the talking.”[162] Shepherd continued,“that’s not where the similarities end. [...] Grande is sub-verting it with cute, comfortable, and on-trend dresseswith a feminine slant.”[162] Grande expressed her feelingstowards being compared to Mariah Carey as a “huge com-pliment” and a “blessing”,[149][163] and often cites bothMariah Carey and Whitney Houston as influences for herwork.[16][142][145] In another interview, she said: “I mean,it’s a huge compliment, but when you hear my entire al-bum, you'll see that Mariah’s sound is much different thanmine.”[149] Her vocal display at the 2013 American MusicAwards, earned praise from celebrities like Kelly Clark-son and Lady Gaga, which saw Grande singing a cappellato her hit “The Way” and a Motown-style performanceof “Tattooed Heart.”[164] During an interview with SiriusXM, American pop singer Katy Perry praised Grande, saying she has “the best female vocal in pop music today. She has literally the best voice, the best voice live.[165][166]

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Coldplay's front-man Chris Martin also commended Grande’s vocal abilitywhen he was asked if a duet with her was a possibility, towhich he said “I would man, but she can sing so muchbetter than me. I don’t want to be humiliated in that fash-ion, I was in the car yesterday and “Problem” was on, Iwas like, ‘I just can’t do that.’"[167] Steven J. Horowitz ofBillboard feels that it is time to stop comparing Grandeto Carey stating, “With her sophomore album, the “Prob-lem” singer no longer resembles the elusive chanteuse –and that’s okay.”[161]

Grande’s modest look early in her career was describedas “age appropriate” compared with other pop stars whogrew up in the public eye.[162] Jim Farber of New YorkDaily News wrote that Grande receives less attention “forhow little she wears or how graphically she moves thanfor how she sings.”[168] In contrast to other young fe-male artists like Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea, and Rihanna,Grande stated that she wants people to listen to her mu-sic “instead of look and judge": “I don't feel confident inmy sexuality – or in my fashion. It’s just not in my mind.I think of music first.”[168] By 2014, however, she optedto wear short skirts and crop tops with white knee-highboots in performances and on red carpets.[169]

Although Grande drew criticism for allegedly impolite in-teractions with reporters and fans in 2014,[170] she dis-missed these reports as “weird, inaccurate depictions” ofher personality.[171] After considering the incidents mostfrequently mentioned in the press and the available evi-dence, PopSugar concluded that Grande’s behavior was“just normal star behavior” and “not the most ideal sit-uation, but ... not exactly the sign of a diva”.[172] Shewas praised in the press and by female celebrities likeTaylor Swift, Rita Ora and Selena Gomez for an “empow-ering” 2015 essay posted on Twitter decrying the dou-ble standard and misogyny in the focus of the press onfemale musicians’ relationships and sex lives, instead of“their value as an individual”.[173][174] Grande noted thatshe has “more to talk about” concerning her music andaccomplishments.[175][176]

Grande was seen on surveillance video in a doughnutshop, in July 2015, licking doughnuts that were on dis-play and saying “I hate Americans. I hate America.”[177]

She responded, writing that she is “extremely proud to bean American” and that her comments related to Amer-ican obesity.[178] She later released a video apology for“behaving poorly”, saying that she felt “disgusted” withherself.[179] The incident was parodied by The Mup-pets[180] and featured in Miley Cyrus' Saturday Night Livesong cover of "My Way", about the regrets of summer2015.[181]
