Argus Leader Lend-A-Hand Raises $50,000 for The Banquet The Banquet is blessed to have been chosen as the recipient of the 2018 Lend-A-Hand. Each year, Argus Leader Media picks an organization to support through human interest stories and promotional resources. Staff writers and photographers have spent the past couple of months getting to know some of The Banquet guests and volunteers. They have highlighted the importance of this ministry in the lives of people who come to eat and come to serve. Through these stories they have asked their readers and subscribers to join them in supporting The Banquet financially. “It has been our pleasure to work with the Argus Leader staff and to watch our guests and volunteers describe how important The Banquet is to them,” said Tamera Jerke-Liesinger, Banquet Executive Director.

Over the past decade, Lend-A-Hand has raised more than $1 million dollars for local charities. This is the first time The Banquet has participated in this fundraising event.

Lent - A Season of Renewal With the Lenten season just around the corner it’s the perfect opportunity to renew our thoughts of mercy and grace to those around us. During the months after the holidays, The Banquet is in dire need of volunteers to prepare, serve and make a financial donation toward the cost of meals. Please call or go online to set up a date. The Banquet Needs You Now More than Ever It’s 2019. Many of us make New Year resolutions of improving self-care and giving and accomplishing more. If we’re describing you, volunteering at The Banquet could be just what you’re looking for! Volunteering decreases stress and anxiety, helps combat depression, and gives you a sense of purpose, all while benefiting someone else. We have jobs for everyone! Here are some examples of what you can do at The Banquet:

• Receptionist - answering phones, sorting mail and filing • Sorting and organizing - school supplies, books, magazines - working on special projects• Newsletter mailings• Data entry• Lawn care & landscaping• Cooking, serving meals• Cleaning• Children’s Room volunteer

Farewell Jody! Jody Morrow is leaving The Banquet after working as a part-time Kitchen Coordinator for 13 years. Thank you, Jody for your dedication to the volunteers and guests of The Banquet. You will be missed!

Marvella Shatter served much more than hot, nutritious food to The Banquet guests for the past 20 years. While some guests needed a reassuring nod, a grandmotherly hug and prayers, others sometimes got a heaping helping of tough love. Either way, The Banquet guests would come back and know Marvella would be here in the kitchen, waiting with the day’s food ready when the door opened for guests.

When Marvella was hired at The Banquet in 1998, volunteers served six meals each week, providing food for about 300 guests per day. Shortly thereafter, a 7th meal was added, the first breakfast meal on Monday mornings.

While no one wanted to see the numbers of people seeking meals increase, that’s exactly what happened.

“In the span of 20 years, The Banquet totally changed. More meals, more people, a different location and the expansion of Banquet West. All changes that were exciting. I remember the first night that we served 400 people…oh, my gosh…then it got be if we didn’t serve 400 people it was like, where was everyone at?”

Marvella retired just before Christmas, a decision she said was not easy because she looked forward to stepping through the doors each and every day. “Who am I going to meet today, who’s going to impact my life today, whose life am I going to impact today. The meal is just a small part of the picture,” said Shatter.

While life has slowed a bit since retirement, there are a lot of perks, “I don’t have to get up to an alarm clock. I have the ability now to ponder, what is next? I can travel, I can volunteer, only time will tell.”

But she is certain of one thing. “I’m going to live at the lake all summer, I know that. As soon as the weather is warmer, we’ll be living at the lake.” Marvella, her husband Doug, and dog Murphy are spending much needed time together. Murphy is getting a whole lot of attention and getting to go for a mile walk each day.

Marvella lives by the saying that hung in her office for many years “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

20th Annual Festival of Men’s Voices Raises $13,000!Music filled the air in the Tom and Penny Lorang Theatre when the seven all-male choruses took the stage. The Festival of Men’s Voices celebrated their 20th year of singing with all proceeds benefitting The Banquet! A huge thank you to the following choruses: First Reformed Church Men’s Chorus, Minnehaha Mandskor, Singing Legionnaires, El Riad Chanters, Maplewood Men, Sioux Emperians and the Norse Glee Club. An additional thank you to our Masters of Ceremonies, Adam Catangui and Nick Maxwell as well as Kevin Humke for volunteering his time as Technical Director.

New Location Attracts More Participants to the Thanksgiving Day Run for Food Change can be scary, so The Banquet staff approached a location change for its Thanksgiving Day “Run for Food” with some apprehension. The move from downtown Sioux Falls to the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds provided more parking and a great running/walking surface, which created the perfect venue for the annual event. The change, combined with beautiful weather, attracted almost 800 participants and raised nearly $50,000 for The Banquet!

Optimist Shopping Day

You must be an Optimist to take more than 100 kids shopping! We had great weather for the Sioux Falls Morning Optimist Club members to set up their Christmas “store” for the children to choose gifts for their parents and grandparents. After “shopping” with the help of Optimist members, volunteers wrapped the gifts chosen by the excited children!

New Christmas Sweatshirts and Socks Warm Bodies and Hearts

We had a tremendous response to our request to provide a Christmas gift for a guest of The Banquet! Our project “Hoodies and Footies” was an overwhelming success! The guests chose a brand-new sweatshirt and socks to help stave off the chill of winter. The generosity of people living in South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, and as far away as Kansas is amazing! The Banquet and our guests thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Weber Cleaning, Inc. of Mitchell Gives The Banquet an Early Christmas Gift

Santa came early to The Banquet, not armed with a big sack but with elves wielding scrub brushes, mops, brooms and especially big hearts! The Banquet was gifted a cleaning day by Weber Cleaning, Inc. of Mitchell. They deep cleaned the entire dining room and kitchen. Thank you so much!

Hundreds of Sioux Falls families benefitted from the warm coat, mitten and shoe distributions through KELO-TV.

KELO Media Group partnered with Lewis Drug and Montgomery’s Furniture to collect and distribute warm winter clothing to people in need in our community.

On November 1st guests “shopped” for the perfect coat, hats, gloves and scarves for themselves and their children. The clothing is set out by size and people are able to pick and choose their size, favorite color and style. The Banquet was one of six distribution sites for the Keep KELOLAND Warm event.

In December, forty children paired up with officers from the Sioux Falls Police Department, Minnehaha Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Game, Fish and Parks, Tea Police Department,Highway Patrol and Sioux Falls Animal Control. They were chauffeured by School Bus Inc. to Target East and Target West where they met their officer and shopped with a $50 gift card graciously donated by Target! After shopping, their gifts were wrapped by officers and Target employees while the children enjoyed Christmas cookies. It was great fun for all involved!

Come Serve a Meal with Us!

The Banquet needs almost 400 volunteers each week to serve the 13 meals we provide to hundreds of guests each day. Groups of 20-40 people are needed for each meal, but groups of as few as 5 are welcome to sign up! They will be paired with another small group to fill our volunteer needs. We have many open dates over the next few months, and groups of all sizes are encouraged to come and check us out!

Our website, https://thebanquetsf.org/serve-a-meal offers a way for your group to book a serving date online. To serve a meal with a group of 5 or more, click on the “serve a meal” tab on our website. The days marked in red on the calendar indicate the days we need groups. Pat Smith, Volunteer Handyman

Meet Pat Smith, one of The Banquet’s newest volunteers. He is doing handyman and maintenance work for The Banquet. He’s been touching up paint, and adding some much needed TLC to The Banquet. Pat is retired and decided to put his construction and carpentry skills to work volunteering. We’re so pleased he chose The Banquet!

When Todd came in to check his mail, he asked to borrow a shovel, so he could scoop the front sidewalk. This shows how much our guests appreciate the support they receive at The Banquet. Wish List for The Banquet The Banquet has several onging needs: poker chips for meal count; coffee, sugar and flour; oils and vinegar; salt, pepper and spices (large sizes); napkins, kitchen sanitary gloves; large coffee filters; stamps for postage; travel size toiletries; feminine hygiene products. We could use clean plastic containers with lids for leftovers-cottage cheese, sour cream, Cool Whip and margarine containers are the perfect sizes! We suggest used clothing and toys go to places such as St. Vincent de Paul. The Furniture Mission accepts furniture and kitchen items.

Behind the Scenes Work Underway for Banquet West

The Banquet’s building committee is working to get all the pieces in place for a spring groundbreaking for a new 7,000 square foot building at the corner of 5th St. and Marion Road in northwest Sioux Falls. Banquet West will serve families living in northwest Sioux Falls in the Hayward Elementary School neighborhood.
