Staff wellbeing and health is not a high
priority for employers, research revealsMORE than half of leaders and heads of HRdo not believe that their organisation has aduty of care to protect employee health, astudy has found.
The research, conducted by leadershipdevelopment specialist Morgan Redwood, showed that only 46 per cent of fir ms re-garded staff health as an employer’s respon-sibility.
The limited proportion of leaders who rec-ognise their responsibility for staff health isin stark contrast to the specialist’s 2009 study, which showed that 95 per cent of businessesbelieved they did have a duty of care for thehealth of their workforce.
Such a huge swing in attitudes is surpris-ingly in light of the findings that 26 per centof respondents believed that business perfor-mance was ‘very closely connected’ to staff wellbeing, with a further 57 per cent seeingthem as ‘quite connected’.
Only seven per cent of the business leadersin the survey felt performance and wellbeingwere ‘not at all connected.’
The research also found that helping staff to achieve a better work-life balance was lowon the list of HR priorities, ranked tenth byrespondents, with only six per cent viewing itas a key aspect of their HR strategy.
Employee well-being was rated even lower, with slightly under six per cent of employers
considering it to be a priority, placing it 12thon the list.
The top priority was ‘attracting better tal-ent to the business’ with 39 per cent, followedby ‘reducing staff churn’ with 37 per cent andin third position ‘reducing staff costs’ with 35per cent.
Janice Haddon, managing director at Mor-gan Redwood, said: “The latest findings reallydo indicate a startling shift in employeropinion.
“A swing from 95 per cent to 46 per cent is ahuge difference. What has caused such a seachange?
“In 2014 the CIPD reported that 40 percent of employers are seeing a rise in stressrelated absence and reported mental healthproblems, such as anxiety and depression,so the fact that companies are less inclinedto see well-being as within their remit of responsibility is perplexing.”
She asked whether the rise in reportedhealth issues, revealed by the CIPD, couldbe caused by a change in employer attitudeand said it would be tempting to blame anincreasingly held conviction that work-lifeintegration is more appropriate than work-life balance.
“Our report findings indicate that a poorwork-life balance is regarded as [having] themost adverse impact on morale,” Haddon
said.“Perhaps employers are putting recruit-
ment ahead of the need to tend to existingemployee needs, which means they’ve takentheir eye off the well-being ball.
“Burnt out, poorly treated emploend up becoming detrimental in thso employers need to ensure theyficient resource to cater to the fulof employee needs.”
