THE ARGUS Volume 74, Issue 1 First Month Edition July 2013 “S” Winners Declared! Throughout the summer at Camp Shohola, there are a few campers who shine above the rest. These men are recognized through an award called the “Shohola S”. To win this award, you must surpass regular camp standards set in the cabin, be a leader amongst other campers, and be the person who makes camp more enjoyable for everyone else. The “S” winners have been chosen for their optimistic view around camp, as well as for their kindness towards others. Not only must these campers stand out in a family of amazing campers and be recognized by their peers, they must also catch the eye of their counselors. To win the “S”, a camper must receive an 80% staff vote agreeing that he should win. This honor is greatly cherished, and the recipients should be congratulated thoroughly. These campers are recognized as being the best of the best on camp, and are a true representation of the Camp Shohola spirit that we all truly look for in a friend and a camper. A great battle ensued instantly with the Elephant Sealʼs putting up a heavy resistance but Sir Santiago unleashed the Lion within and swept them aside to clear his path to the princess. All kingdoms let our a cry of cheer as Sir Santiago carried the princess of into the sunset. In light of this festive occasion, the kingdom was split into four families: The Eagles, Bears, Lions and Wolves, all bearing their own signature color. Someof the activities arenew-comb, volleyball,kickball, dodge-ball,capture the flag, andhandball. That is onepart of why outdoorgames is such a greatclass. Another part isthe counselors thatteachtheclass,Brett,

Evan, Ryan, Alex andNoah. Another reasonthat makes outdoorgames so fun is thatthere are so manycampers in the classwhich makes the classfull. The only classperiodis1A,butIthinkthere should be moreclasses because somany campers want tosign up. Second monthIthinkyoushouldsignup for outdoor games,itissomuchfun!

MMAMarcusLucasCabin2At Mixed MartialArts/ Wrestling welearn moves and howto defend ourselves.During classes westand on the mat andwe watch moves beingperformed in front ofus.MMA is fun, and asyou have fun, you arelearning as well. I love SkateboardingclassatShohola!Icanskate during 2B classin the park or aroundcamp. But sometimeswhen it rains I skatearoundthecabin.Ilikeskaleboarding becauseof the cool jumps andtheamountoffunthatihavewhenI’mskating.Iwishmorekidswouldsign up because I’msure theywould enjoyitasmuchasIdo.

In swimming at campShohola we have somuch fun. You playgames, and do relays,and we always stayand hang out and talkafter we are finishedswimming. The relaysyou swim are eitherMedley’s,breaststroke,butterfly, back strokeorfreestyle.Thegamesyou sometimes play areshark and minnows orwaterpolo.Youhavetotake swimming, but ifyou are really good atit, you can try to passthe swimming test, andif you do, you do notneed to go anymore. Inthe beginning you alsoneedtotakeatest,itiscalled the deep watertest.Ifyoucannotswim2 laps and stay abovewater for 5 minutes,youmust alwayswearalifejacket. It is really

important,nottoforgetabout your buddytag!Thereisnothingbetteron a hot sunny dayto head down to thewaterfrontandgetintothelakeandhavesomefun! Maybe, one morething...SNOWBALLS!

Shohola fishing is oneof the best classesoffered at camp. Thereis such a variety offish in the lake suchas Bass, Pickerel andShiners. What I love isthateveryonecanhaveagoandparticipate,andalotofthetimeeveryonecatches a fish. Theteachersthemselvesareamazingandknowexactlywhat they’redoing.TheShohola fishing classisanamazingexperienceandonethat isfullonfunandenjoyment.

Riding is an activitywith different levels.As a beginner youcan learn how to getyour horse to walkwith you on his back,as well a sitting trot.The next level up isintermediatewhereyouhavetheopportunitytolearn how to do andperfectapostingtrot,as well as canteringwhichisalittlefasterthan trotting. Andfinally there is theadvanced class whereyou can learn how to

getyourhorsetojumpover different sizedobstacles like walls,as well as perfectingregular trot, jumpingtrots, cantering andthe jumping canter.In the advanced class,as well as perfectingyourridingtechniques,you also learn how totack up your horse.Riding is one of myfavorite classes atCamp Shohola and onethatIwouldrecommendtoanyone!

Waterskiingisawesome,itisaspecialactivityatcamp, and it is one ofthe best sports in theworld.Thecounselorsare really cool and Ilike them a lot. OscarandEmmaareawesome,it is even fun just onthewaytothelake,welistentomusicandtalk.When we get there,safety is first, so you

putonalifejacketandthen you are ready togo! The boat is reallynice, and is alreadywaiting for you. Thefirsttimeyoufeelthebreezewhenyoustart,with the heat of thesunisthebestfeeling,anditevengetsbetterwhen you get on thelake.Afterwaterskiingyou get a popsicle.If you do not trywaterskiing, you surearemissingalotoffun.

When I first cameto Shohola in 2012i had no interest intheatre based on thefalse pretenses thatthe class was “girly”,despite having aninterestinthesubjectelsewhere. Twoweeks passed withoutme giving theatre asecond thought. ThenI experienced my thirdcampfire. Though onlytwoweekshavepassed,campfire was alreadymy favorite part ofcamp. That specificcampfire completely

For example,I made a slingshot, aplaque for cabin 8, aradio and a tomahawk.Attheendofyourstayatcampyougettobringyourprojecthome.Thecounselors who teachitarealwaysveryniceand cool. They alsoassist you at any timewhenyouneedit.There

classbroughtmoreandnewfun.WhenIfinallyperformed I was metwith endless laughterand earth-shatteringapplause. Not onlywas theatre fun,but it also providedme a creative outletand forced on newrelationships. To say‘there is no judgment’is understatement. Ifyou join theatre youtoo will have the timeofyourlife.

Rearing upfrom the ground thistwo-sided behemothhas proved quite thechallenge this year.When talking to PeteChaplin, head ofropes, he said that hedesignedthewallwithspecific challengesthat require uniqueskills to overcome.On the side closest tothe rock shed there

is a split incline soyou can conquer yourbackwards movementeither suddenly orslowly.Ontheflipsideonthewallthefaceisevenmorechallenging.The holds start outplentiful and easyto grip but slowlybecome harder to gripand sparser. All inall thenewtowerhassomethingforeveryone,be you a newbie or anexperienced climber.

This year if you signedup for the theatre trip,you had the chance tosee the musical. YoungFrankenstein, a play byMel Brooks, is a hilariouscomedyaboutthegrandsonof Dr. Frankenstein. Atfirst, he wants nothing todowiththefamilybusiness,but after his grandfatherpasses away,he makes aquest from the bustlingstreets of New York City,to a castle the foothillsin haunted Transylvania.With the help of hisassistantandhiscompanion,Igor, he creates the mostintelligent monster ever,andeventhevillagerscannot complain. Today, July 12, campShohola history wasmade. Our beloved twotime working senior, JohnMulbergerleft.WhatwillhappentoShoholawithouthim? I guess we just havetofindout,One thing forsure,wearegoingtoneedmoreswag.
