GRE Analytical Writing Argument Essay Topic - 1

A recent study shows that people living on the continent of North America suffer 9 times more chronic

fatigue and 31 times more chronic depression than do people living on the continent of Asia. Interestingly,

Asians, on average, eat 20 grams of soy per day, whereas North Americans eat virtually none. It turns out

that soy contains phytochemicals called Isoflavones, which have een found to possess disease!

preventing properties. "hus, North Americans should consider eating soy on a regular asis as a way of

    preventing fatigue and depression.

    #ample #olution ! 1

"he aove argument tries to estalish a direct lin$ etween soy consumption and chronic fatigue and

depression. "he underlying asis of the argument is that soy protein contains phytochemicals called

Isoflavones, which are found to possess disease!preventing properties.

%owever, disease is a much larger term, which does not cover only fatigue and depression, ut also a

host of other medical conditions. &oreover, it is seen that chronic fatigue and depression are also the

results of high profile life, which leads to insomnia and stress. 'hronic fatigue and depression can e the

symptoms of some other diseases also. "he weather conditions, economic stature and wor$ environment

of Asia and North America are very different from each other. (eople in these continents have different

lifestyles. "heir attitude towards life is also very different. "hese health related prolems could not e

certainly related with the inta$e of a certain $ind of food that is soy foods. "herefore, it is very important to

estalish a direct relation etween soy foods and chronic fatigue and depression efore arriving at any

    conclusion.

"he second point is that fatigue and depression are totally different from each other as scientifically they

are treated differently. )ou cannot categori*e them in the same group. )ou need to consult a psychologist

to treat depression and a doctor for fatigue related prolems. %ence, there cannot e the same solution

for two different prolems. Aove all, according to the author, chronic fatigue is 9 times and depression is

31 times more in North Americans as compared to their Asian counterparts. "here is a huge difference

etween 9 and 31. "herefore, you cannot relate or treat them together. "here are definitely going to e

different reasons for the two diseases.

According to the author, soy foods contain a chemical called Isoflavones, which have disease preventingproperties. %owever, there is no study, which reveals that it is relevant for all types of diseases. %ence, a

research has to e done to estalish that the drugs used to treat these two diseases contain Isoflavones.

%owever, it is a $nown fact that soy foods are good for human health as soy foods contain many nutrients

re+uired for the human ody. Again, there is no solid evidence that eating soy foods on a regular asis is

a solution for chronic fatigue and depression. "he author has not even mentioned aout any side effects

of Isoflavones. %ence, the suggestion to ta$e soy foods daily, without any detailed study aout soy food,

    does not hold any ground.

%ence, it can e said that one should ta$e soy foods for overall health. It is a possiility that soy foods can

e helpful in treating or preventing some diseases, which further have chronic fatigue or depression as its

symptoms. "hat way one can lin$ these two diseases with Isoflavones. %owever, there is no direct

relation etween soy proteins and chronic fatigue and depression it is not -ustified in the given argument.

"he author should have provided a few proofs and data to estalish this relationship.

In order to save a considerale amount of money, /oc$inghams century!old town hall should e torn

down and replaced y the larger and more energy!efficient uilding that some citi*ens have proposed.

"he old town hall is too small to comfortaly accommodate the numer of people who are employed ythe town. In addition, it is very costly to heat the old hall in winter and cool it in summer. "he new, larger

uilding would e more energy efficient, costing less per s+uare foot to heat and cool than the old hall.

4urthermore, it would e possile to rent out some of the space in the new uilding, therey generating

income for the town of /oc$ingham.

    #ample #olution ! 2

According to the conclusion of this editorial, the new and larger uilding of town hall in place of the old

one will help in saving money and energy. %owever, many points given in support of the views of the

writer are not very convincing. Although, there is no dout that the new proposed uilding will have manyadvantages over the old town hall, ut the author has ignored to mention many important points. %e has

completely failed to provide evidence for his reasons to uild the new uilding. "he points given y the

author have no relevant relation among themselves. 4or e5ample, the cost effectiveness and the fact that

the old uilding is not ale to accommodate its employees are not related anywhere. %e has tried to

e5plain the need of the new town hall ut has neglected to suggest the alternative measures that can e

ta$en to solve the prolems faced y the old town hall.

"he author has tal$ed aout the larger and the energy efficient new uilding. According to him, it would

cost less per cuic foot to heat and cool the new uilding as compared to the old town hall uilding.

%owever, he has easily forgotten to mention the overall cost of heating and cooling the much larger new

uilding. "his cost might e much higher than the current e5penses. In addition, there will e the costs of

constructing the new uilding and installing new systems. "he author has not even mentioned the option

of installing new heating and cooling systems in the old uilding. "he upgradation of the old system might

e more cost effective. 6esides, the new uilding might also need some maintenance fee to maintain the

new facilities added to the uilding.

  • 7/23/2019 Arguments Sample

    3/12

"he second point on which the author is insisting is that the current uilding cannot comfortaly

accommodate all the people who wor$ in it. "his point is anyways not related to the money saving

measures the author is tal$ing aout. %ere again, the author has ignored other more effective solutions

for this prolem. 4or e5ample, adding another structure for the employees.

Another point is aout the renting out of the parts of the new property to generate some income. %owever,

the views of the author are contradictory as on one hand, he is e5plaining the need of a larger uilding

and on the other hand, he is tal$ing aout the renting out some part of property. %ence, if the new and

larger uilding is the need of the hour then there is no scope of additional income. "he author has failed

to give enough and strong evidence for the re+uirement of the new uilding. %e has also forgotten to

consider the heritage value of the /oc$inghams century old town hall.

%ence, the author has to collect more information aout the old uilding. "he author must search for

some solid evidence. %e should do a complete and detailed study of comparing the cost effectiveness of

oth the options including the initial cost of setting up the new uilding and replacing the old heating

system in the old uilding. "he author has to wor$ towards ma$ing his editorial logically more correct.

/ Analytical riting Argument ssay "opic ! 3

'laitown 7niversity needs oth affordale housing for its students and a way to fund the uilding of such

housing. "he est solution to this prolem is to commission a famous architect $nown for e5perimental

and futuristic uildings. It is common $nowledge that tourists are willing to pay money to tour some of the

architects uildings, so it can e e5pected that tourists will want to visit this new uilding. "he income

from the fees charged to tourists will soon cover the uilding costs. 4urthermore, such a uilding will

attract new students as well as donations from alumni. And even though such a uilding will e much

larger than our current need for student housing, part of the uilding can e used as office space.

    #ample #olution ! 3

"his argument is aout hiring a famous architect to uild a cost effective uilding to house the students of

'laitown 7niversity. %owever, it seems from the authors statement that the 7niversity does not have

enough funds to construct this $ind of uilding. "he authors line of thought is not very convincing. %e has

not een ale to give logics for his reasons. %e should have gone in details of the cost of the new uilding

and other costs and the source of this money.

"his argument has many loopholes as the author is tal$ing on the asis of his assumptions. 4irst of all, he

is tal$ing aout commissioning a famous architect, who might charge a heavy amount for his wor$. It will

add a heavy urden on the 7niversitys udget. "he author has simply s$ipped this line of reasoning. %e

has not included this e5penditure in the cost. "he author is assuming that all the e5penditure related to

the uilding will e ta$en care of y the funds coming from the students fee, donations coming from the

alumni and the amount paid y tourists to visit the new uilding.

  • 7/23/2019 Arguments Sample

    4/12

%owever, all these are -ust assumptions. "he author has not considered the possiility that the tourists

might not e interested in visiting a uilding that is meant for students housing. 8nce the students start

using the uilding, tourists will not e attracted towards the uilding or they might e happy y watching it

from outside only. "hat way there will not e any income from the tourists. %ence, the arguments claim

fails to prove that a famous architects wor$ will generate income for the alancing of costs.

"he author has not even e5plained the source of money to construct the uilding. "he uilding will receive

the funds from students in the form of fee and other funds only when the uilding will e in use. %ence,

this argument holds ase only if the architect agrees to ta$e his payment later on and the supplier also

supplies the construction material without ta$ing any advance.

4urther, the author has tal$ed aout attracting new students and the old students who can ma$e

donations. %owever, he has not provided any evidence to support his views neither he has given any

e5ample of some other university. It might e possile that the old alumni are more attached to the

e5isting uilding. "herefore, one cannot accept this conclusion without any proof.

In short, we can say that the author could not support his argument. %e has not supplied any evidence to

prove his point. %e should have studied similar cases of other college uildings that were designed y

famous architects and tourists are interested in visiting and paying to watch them. "he author should also

have emphasi*ed on the detailed e5planation of the financial aspects of the uilding pro-ect. A survey of

old students and alumni also would have een a good idea as then we will $now how interested students

    are to ma$e donations.

As a result of numerous consumer complaints of di**iness and nausea, (romofoods re+uested that eightmillion cans of tuna e returned for testing last year. (romofoods concluded that the cans did not, after all,

contain chemicals that posed a health ris$. "his conclusion is ased on the fact that the chemists from

(romofoods tested samples of the recalled cans and found that, of the eight chemicals most commonly

lamed for causing symptoms of di**iness and nausea, five were not found in any of the tested cans. "he

chemists did find that the three remaining suspected chemicals are naturally found in all other $inds of

    canned foods.

    #ample #olution !

"his argument is ased on the complaints of nausea and di**iness from the consumers who have used

canned tuna. Although (romofoods had recalled eight million cans of tuna and also some samples of tuna

to la for testing, it concluded that the cans did not contain any chemical, which can cause any health

    ha*ard.

"he results of the tests done y chemists from (romofoods do not hold any ground, as these results are

not supported y any strong evidence. As per the chemists from (romofoods, there are eight chemicals

responsile for di**iness and nausea and five of them were not present in the tested cans of tuna.

  • 7/23/2019 Arguments Sample

    5/12

%owever, they have not considered the possiility that certain chemicals in contact with other chemicals

can also cause di**iness and nausea. "he results of this testing can also e iased as the testing has

een done only on a few samples. %ence, it cannot e said that five chemicals not present in the tested

samples were not present in the cans consumed y the affected uyers. (romofoods should have

collected the cans from where tuna was consumed and that caused health ris$ for many people. It might

e possile that those cans contained these chemicals. hen it comes to testing, you cannot generali*e

    the results.

According to (romofoods, five suspected chemicals were not present in the tested samples and the other

three are present in the other canned foods and do not cause any ad effect. %owever, this is again

without any strong evidence. It is -ust an assumption that the chemicals, which do not cause any ad

effect in one canned food, will not cause any ill effect in canned tuna. It might e possile that one of

these chemicals causes health ris$ when e5posed to some specific chemical present in tuna. %ence, it is

not right to say in general that tuna cans were not responsile for the symptoms of di**iness and nausea.

It can e said the whole conclusion of (romofoods is ased on wea$ evidence. "he results of the tests

done y the chemists are not very convincing.

(romofoods should have done tests on a large numer of canned tuna. It should have gathered more

results to ma$e its study more convincing. %owever, it cannot e said that the study done y (romofoods

is aseless. It is entirely possile that there are some other chemicals, which are responsile for the

symptoms of nausea and di**iness and it is not found yet. (romofoods should also ta$e this possiility

    into account.

In the end, it can e said that the entire study of this argument is ased on assumption that the eight

chemicals responsile for nausea and di**iness were not present in the tuna cans. "his is an important

study and (romofoods should wor$ on providing stronger evidence. "hey have to prove that there was no

iased sampling and the testing was correct. "he chemists have to prove that the three chemicals, which

are normally found in other canned foods, do not cause any harmful effect in tuna.

"his argument is aout the two competing products, 'olde5 and 'old!Away. 6oth the medicines are cold

medicines availale over!the!counter. 6oth the rands compete with each other and accuse each other

for some side effect. According to the author, 'olde5 is responsile for causing high lood pressure and

'old!Away causes drowsiness. %ere, the author seems a little iased as without providing any evidence,

he is suggesting that as 'old!Away is in the mar$et for a longer period, it is more effective and it should

e the clear choice of customers.

"he logic provided y the author is very duious and unconvincing. "he author is simply trying to oost

the consumers ego y saying that the choice should e clear for most health!conscious people. "hough it

is a good advertising tactic used y the company, it cannot e considered as enough proof of 'old!Away

    eing more effective.

"he author is giving one more logic that 'old!Away is in the mar$et for a longer period. %owever, this fact

also does not add any effectiveness to the argument. "he new medicine might have new effective

ingredients. It is not necessary that well!estalished products are etter than newer ones. &oreover,

latest medicines often ma$e use of new pharmaceutical developments than the e5isting products. Insteadof this, the author should have concentrated on the plus and minus points of the two medicines.

According to the author, 'old!Away is used y more hospitals than 'olde5, that is the reason enough to

consider 'old!Away more effective. "his is again an advertising gimmic$ and not a proof that it is more

effective. "here might e some other reasons for hospitals using 'old!Away. It is -ust an assumption of

the author that the hospitals are recommending 'old!Away ecause it is etter than 'olde5. It might e

that doctors are using this medicine ecause of its drowsiness inducing effect to calm their patients. 4or

that matter, perhaps hospitals use 'old!Away primarily for this effect rather than as a cold medication.

8ne more prolem with this argument is the side effect of 'olde5. If 'olde5 is the cause of high lood

pressure then, oviously no doctor will recommend it. %owever, people who do not suffer with the

prolem of high lood pressure can still use it. "hus, 'olde5s side effect is irrelevant in choosing etween

the two products. &oreover, if a person without high lood pressure wishes to avoid drowsiness during

the treatment of cold, 'olde5 would seem to e the preferale medication than 'old!Away.

"he author has not offered convincing evidence to support his views. %e should have strengthened his

argument y providing the evidence that the doctors and hospitals use 'old!Away ecause of its

effectiveness in treating cold. A data of clinical research or a reliale data of general survey would have

supported the argument in a etter way. It should not e ased on assumptions. In the present form, it

-ust loo$s li$e an advertisement tactic to increase the sale of one product. It is -ust trying to persuade

    people to uy 'old!Away.

"ypically, as people age, their one mass decreases, ma$ing them more vulnerale to one fractures. A

recent study concludes that the most effective way to reduce the ris$ of fractures in later life is to ta$e

twice the recommended dose of vitamin = and calcium daily. "he three!year study followed a group of

4rench women in their eighties who were nursing home residents. "he women were given daily

supplements of twice the recommended dose of vitamin = and calcium. In addition, the women

participated in a light weightlifting program. After three years, these women showed a much lower rate of

hip fractures than is average for their age.

    #ample #olution ! >

"he asis of this argument is the fact that people lose their one mass as they age and therefore, they

are more prone to fractures. According to the conclusion of this argument, old people should ta$e twice

the recommended dose of vitamin = and calcium. %owever, there are many loopholes in this study. "he

evidence used y the author is very vague.

4irst of all, this study is only on a group of 4rench women. "his cannot e true for the people from all

other continents or even countries. (eople from different places have different food haits and different

life styles. very place has different climate and geological conditions. (eople from plain areas and

people from hilly areas cannot e placed in the same group. #imilarly, persons with active lifestyles

cannot e merged with the not so active people. ven, males and females should e studied separately

as they are very different from each other in terms of their physi+ue and hormones. "heir level of

asoring vitamin and calcium is different. "here is also a possiility that the 4rench people have

something in their diet that prevents or reduces fractures. &oreover, the author has not mentioned the

numer of women in the group. If the group is too small, then it does not even represent all the 4rench

women. "he author has assumed so many things and generali*ed the data, which cannot e possile.

#econdly, this study is done on nursing home residents, which in itself +uestions the study. "here might

e a possiility that these women had led an active life in their career and ta$en various precautions

related to their health, hence they are less susceptile to fractures. It is highly possile that the other

women, who are not the residents of a nursing home will suffer the same numer of fractures in spite of

ta$ing the recommended vitamin = and calcium.

  • 7/23/2019 Arguments Sample

    9/12

"he third point is that this study is done only on the women who are in their eighties. %ence, the results of

this study do not hold true for all age groups. &oreover, the author has also mentioned in his study that

these women also participated in some lightweight e5ercises. "he author has not ta$en care of this

aspect while concluding the argument. It is highly possile that these lightweight e5ercises had actually

strengthened the muscles of these women. "he author has not mentioned or e5plained the relation

etween vitamin = and calcium and the strength of ones. %e should have e5plained in details the

relation etween the fractures and the inta$e of vitamin = and calcium.

"he lowest point of this argument is that according to the author, the women have shown a lower rate of

hip fractures. %e has not even mentioned the effect of increased dose of vitamin on the other types of

fractures. %ence, the results cannot e true for other types of fractures. "he author should have also

considered other fractures. %ence, it can e concluded that this study is incomplete and deprived of

enough evidence. %ence, this conclusion is not very convincing.

#ome studies conducted y 6ronston 'ollege, which is also located in a small town, reveal that oth male

and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the

same geographic area. "herefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to

our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at (ierce 7niversity should offer employment

to the spouse of each new faculty memer we hire. Although we cannot e5pect all offers to e accepted

or to e viewed as an ideal -o offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly e well spent ecause, if

their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will e more li$ely to accept our offers.

"his argument contains a suggestion given y the chairperson of a department to the president of the

(ierce 7niversity that is ased on a study conducted y 6ronston 'ollege that is located in a small town

li$e (ierce 7niversity. "his study concludes that if the university is interested in attracting gifted teachers

and researches, then the university should give -o offers to the spouse of each new talented teacher.

"his study concludes that the teachers will e happier staying in small towns if their spouses will e in the

same geographical area. %owever, this argument seems a little doutful as it is not supported y

evidence and the author has not ta$en care of all the situations.

4irst of all the study is done y 6ronston 'ollege and not y the university itself. "he (ierce 7niversity

and the 6ronston 'ollege have only one thing in common that oth of them are situated in small towns."he author has not tal$ed aout the environments of the two places, numer of students, and the

reputation of the two institutions. A teacher will also consider all these things while accepting a -o offer.

%ence, whether the study done y 6ronston 'ollege will wor$ for the (ierce 7niversity or not, has to e

    ta$en care of.

"he second reason that the author has mentioned is that the teachers are happier staying in small towns

when their spouses are in the same geographical area. %ere again, the author is -ust assuming the case

of teachers in the small town. "he same may e true for the teachers in the cities. "his possiility can also

e true. "here is also the possiility of teachers eing happier ecause of the good and peaceful

environment of the small town where the 6ronston 'ollege lies in. "he author has overloo$ed all these

factors, hence, the argument cannot e concluded on the asis of these statements.

Another factor is that the chairperson has mentioned is that the 7niversity should ta$e this measure to

attract the most gifted teachers. %owever, that is also not guaranteed as if a person is more talented then

most of the times that person is amitious. In this case, they would e more interested in getting -os in a

etter university li$e %arvard or &I". "hey would also give preference to the conditions of the laoratory

and the salary given y the 7niversity. All these factors ma$e the chairpersons recommendations less

    valuale.

ven if it will attract the most gifted teachers and researchers and improve the morale of their entire staff,

the chairperson has not provided any evidence that the results of the new policy will e profitale. %ence,

even though the recommendations of the chairperson are true, they are not well supported. "he

chairperson should have provided evidence to ensure that the 6ronston 'olleges study is wellappropriate for (ierce 7niversity. "here should have een strong reasons for the most gifted teachers and

4or the past five years, consumers in 'alifornia have een willing to pay twice as much for oysters from

"he argument is ased on a trend, which is running for the last five years that the consumers in 'alifornia

are ready to pay more for oysters from the northeastern Atlantic 'oast than for ulf 'oast oysters.

According to the author, this started when some harmful acteria were found in a few raw ulf 'oast

oysters. %owever, as per this argument, now the scientists have invented a new method to $ill these

harmful acterial, hence, the value of ulf 'oast oysters will increase again.

%owever, this argument is not very acceptale, as many important points have een ignored. 4irst, the

author has not mentioned the +uantity of ulf 'oast oysters in which the harmful acteria were found.

"he whole lot of ulf 'oast oysters cannot e re-ected -ust ecause of a few affected oysters. "he author

has not tried to e5plain this aspect. &oreover, there does not seem to e any relation etween the price of

oysters from the northeastern Atlantic 'oast eing twice high as ulf 'oast ones and harmful acteria

found in a few raw ulf 'oast oysters. It might e that the ulf 'oast oysters are more easily availale

than the northeastern Atlantic 'oast oysters. "here might e some other factors that can affect the prices

of the two types of oysters. "hese factors cannot e ruled out without any research. %ence, the author

should have studied the data carefully and logically to e5plain the lin$ etween the two things.

#econdly, the author has mentioned aout a process devised y scientists to $ill the acteria, ut he has

not tried to e5plain the procedure. In fact, the author has not mentioned aout the success ratio of this

method. "he author has tal$ed aout the increased safety of ulf 'oast oysters ut he is not very sure.

"here are chances that this procedure can only inhiit the growth of the harmful acteria or can $ill a
