AGENT STORY

We have so many charitable Agents that it’s hard to choose who to feature in Parklife. But following on from Kirsty Price’s story about fundraising for cancer charities in the last edition, we’re featuring Natalie Lammert who helps raise money and awareness for her local hospice.

Natalie was so inspired by Kirsty’s story that she felt she had to get in touch. And she hopes her own tale will encourage others to give a helping hand to a hospice close to them.

The busy mum-of-two from Caerphilly works as a bakery assistant in her local Sainsbury’s store, and in her spare time she selflessly raises money for Cancer Research and for nearby St David’s Hospice.

Natalie says: “I have found helping them helps me. I lost my grandfather to lung cancer in 2008. He was the centre pin of the family and losing him took half of me with him. He was always there when I needed him.

My mission is to make more people aware of St David’s and to make them aware of the work the hospice does. People never know when they may need the charity. They support those with life threatening illnesses and their families when faced with the challenge of reaching the end of their lives.

AGENT STORY

Every year the charity needs to raise £5million so that they can continue to offer free care to over 3000 patients. I am just glad I can do my part and raise as much money as possible.

I started raising money by putting on special events at my local rugby club, Pontllanfraith RFC. Several people at the club had come

into contact with St David’s Hospice in the past so they were just as keen as me to make sure the events were a success and raised lots of money.

Our first event was a ladies night last December and it was a huge success. We had some fun party games, a disco and an auction – with some of the rugby players being auctioned off to be servants for the night.”

Since then Natalie has put on several more events, including a family fun day which was a huge hit with her local community and raised lots of money for the hospice. She is currently planning another ladies night for November.

As well as doing her own events for the hospice Natalie has taken part in events to raise money for Cancer Research.

She says: “I decided to take part in Cancer Research’s Race For Life in Cwmbran in June. It felt amazing to be standing shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of women who had lost someone to cancer or suffered themselves.

I had done a bit of training but it wasn’t about seeing who could do it in the fastest time it was all about raising money and telling cancer ‘we’re coming to get you!

It was a lovely route around the park and the atmosphere was fab. My partner Nathan and my children Eva Hannah (4) and Morgan (1) were there to cheer me on. There were bouncy castles, refreshments and music too - which gave it a party feel.

I would certainly recommend Park Agents to take part if they can next year. There are almost 300 events around the UK and Northern Ireland to choose from.”

As a mum-of-eight and nan-of-ten, Karen Lynch could have found Christmas a nightmare because of the expense. But thanks to Park, she finds it so easy to manage.

Karen first started budgeting with Park after she saw our TV advert seven years ago. She knew that it would allow her and husband Mick to afford everything their children and grandchildren wanted for Christmas.

Her grandchildren are Lexus (10), Riley (8), Demi-Lee (5), Brayden (5), JJ (4), Connor (4), Jenson (1) and Jaelan (7 months). Plus step-grandchildren Tobias (15) and Theo (8).

Christmas wish listKaren and Mick love having a full house at Christmas and holding lots of family parties in the weeks leading up to the big day. They make sure they have enough food and drink by stocking up in Iceland as soon as their Love2shop Vouchers arrive.

Karen says: “My grandkids all want what they see on the TV and the pressure is always on. I can’t buy them everything they want but I try to treat them to a few special gifts.

She explains: “It was like a dream. The makeup and hair artistwas lovely and she talked me through what looks I wanted.

“We chatted about different colours of eye shadows andlipsticks and discussed hair styles. I’m getting married nextApril and the makeup artist gave me some useful tips I’ll beable to use on the day.

“I had taken three of my favourite outfits with me and thephotographer’s assistant came over and discussed what towear for each part of the shoot. The photographer Beverleywas so down to earth and friendly. She explained how topose and what to do for each photo which helped loads.

“Being ill for two months really made me feel down inthe dumps but when I read my Parklife magazine andsaw how gorgeous the winner of the last makeoverlooked I felt I had to enter.

“I knew winning a makeover would put a smile back onmy face. I wrote my entry from my sick bed – hopingthat I would be chosen.

“The next day I put the competition to the back of mymind and concentrated on getting better. Weekspassed and by the time the call came through to saythat I had won I was taken off guard.

“I couldn’t believe it. I was so shocked because I’dnever won anything before. It was like a reward forgetting better.”

PHOTO CORNERI just had to get in touch with you to tell you how proud I am of my brother Brendan. He has just been named Slimming World’s Man of the Year 2014 after losing a massive 11st 3lb.

He has worked so hard and he has inspired so many people to follow his example and lose weight. I think I’m going to treat him to some new clothes for Christmas this year with my vouchers!

Handy Hint 1 Don’t throw away empty plastic bottles, save them up and when you’ve got six your kids can use them as skittles.

Handy Hint 2 Gravy tubs make great pots for pens or moneyboxes for your kids. They can paint them any colour they like and decorate them with stickers.

Handy Hint 3 You can make a new peg bag from an old kid’s top. You just need to sew along the bottom of the top and add a coat hanger. You can use the neck hole to get the pegs in and out.
