Outline
JCOMM in situ Observations Programme Support Centre December 2016
Argo is doing very well but some substantial gaps are anticipated and challenges remain to optimize and sustain the array:
• Making deployment strategy and planning more cooperative• Address the upcoming gaps in the Pacific Ocean• Distribute excess of North Atlantic Ocean floats in Gulf Stream, South
Atlantic and possibly in South West Indian Ocean• Making data distribution more automatic (and reach 4000 by AST#18)• Keep delayed mode data distribution on track
We can note additionally that:• Iridium is now the major telecommunication system on use • All float models do not perform equally
Open questions for next AST: Could more AST members commit to chartered ship time for 2017?

Implementation – Intensity of deployments(this KPI had some errors – now corrected)
• Global array deployments slightly low – continued decrease for a year
• Atlantic Ocean optimal (over seeding in North Atlantic)• Pacific Ocean too low – continued decrease for a year • Indian Ocean over seeding – was required• Southern Ocean too low

JCOMM in situ Observations Programme Support Centre December 2016
HistoryOcean is well shared by Argo partners.
But do we see still too much color patches ?
JCOMM in situ Observations Programme Support Centre December 2016
HistoryRegions sometimes unnecessarily over sampled and regions never visited.
Logistics sometimes drive implementation
JCOMM in situ Observations Programme Support Centre December 2016
HistoryRegions never visited show however some observations from floats that
drifted in, but still show some regular gaps.

Biogeochemical Argo
JCOMM in situ Observations Programme Support Centre December 2016
Biogeochemical Argo needs to double the effort to reach its target and implement the full package (6 sensors) on all floats.
IMPLEMENTATION• Activity stabilizing at 30%• Intensity of deployments 45% to be doubled• 1000th BGC float will be soon deployed …DATA FLOW• Optimize real-time distribution and delays, in cooperation with existing
Argo National Data Centres• Metadata improving (SENSOR_MODEL critical to track capabilities)INSTRUMENTATION• Sensor diversity progressing (data availability by sensor to be checked)• But 45% of the network is Oxygen only• Life expectancy of BGC floats is lower than others (2.5 years in 2015 vs
4.8)
