I am very excited for the Area Development Partnership to roll out the digital edition of The Navigator. This is a great opportunity to reach more readers and grow our customer base. In light of COVID-19, the ADP continues to adapt and remain relevant during difficult times. From hosting informative Zoom webinars to creating a Re-Opening Guide for local businesses, we strive to provide as many resources as possible for our membership, especially during challenging times. As Chair of the ADP, I would like to thank you for being a member with this wonderful organization. I encourage you to keep utilizing all of the many benefits we provide.

Welcome to our first digital edition of The Navigator. During the crisis, I challenged our team to pivot and stay relevant and visible. I am proud to say that we have achieved that goal and trust that you have been enjoying our programs and services, albeit in a new delivery format. In this issue of The Navigator, we will be highlighting our team’s tireless efforts during the crisis to be a valuable resource for the business community in maneuvering through these challenging times. While we still have a ways to go in figuring out all the nuances of the new normal, our community is beginning to reopen, reorganize, and move forward together. Our team moved swiftly in developing a COVID-19 resource page on our ADP website along with producing executive summaries of all the federal and state legislation geared toward helping businesses get back on their feet. Countless businesses have relied on these documents to get oriented with the various aid programs.

Our chamber of commerce and economic development divisions worked as one unified team to deliver meaningful content to guide your business, and we have been relentless in promoting our member businesses. The ADP has always had a strong social media presence, but we just took our efforts to another level for you because we are all in it together. When things get tough here, Hattiesburgers just work harder and smarter to be there for each other so that we all rise together. The healthcare crisis turned into a horrific economic crisis, but by working together, we will recover and be stronger for it. The ADP’s mission of enhancing the quality of life through economic progress has always been important, but it is now even more crucial to our region than ever before. We stand ready to answer the call. Our team is talented and capable of meeting today’s challenges with a strategic, collaborative approach with all of our public and private partners.

I know that you will enjoy reading a recap of the many things that we are doing for our members and for the community in general. I hope that you have benefited from our numerous webinars, panel discussions, videos, and social media posts geared toward helping your business grow and prosper. Be sure to join us Friday, July 17th for our virtual Membership Appreciation event as we thank you profusely for your continued investment in our organization. Congressman Steven Palazzo will deliver our keynote address. Moving forward, The Navigator will be arriving digitally in the first month of each quarter, so be on the lookout to stay current and engaged. Call on us if we can ever be of service. Our team is eager to help!

VIRTUAL MEETINGS & EVENTS

Through a collaborative effort between our business community and healthcare providers, the ADP team served on the City of Hattiesburg’s Community Working Group and assisted with the creation of The Hattiesburg Way Forward Guide providing useful information and guidelines for private sector businesses looking to reopen amidst the pandemic. The guide contains best practices on cleaning, disinfecting, hygiene, sanitization, communicating with staff and the public, personal protective equipment, and more. You can view this guide on the ADP’s website under the COVID tab.

RE-OPENING GUIDE

As the COVID-19 pandemic truly set in, your ADP quickly realized that clarity on all the information surrounding small business resources was going to be extremely valuable. The team quickly pivoted by summarizing complex legislation such as the Paycheck Protection Program and Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act into easy to understand means of communication providing much needed clarity to area businesses. All of this rapid flow of information was assembled on to the ADP’s COVID-19 Resources webpage, assisting business owners with a one-stop location for all relevant information. This valuable service continues currently as new legislation is passed in order to help our members navigate this unprecedented challenge.

CLARITY ON SMALL BUSINESS RESOURCES

CREATIVELY ADAPTINGNavigating a New Normal

The ADP is known for its extensive events calendar. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we were unable to host the multitude of events we had planned for 2020. Upon canceling, our team worked together to plan webinars and virtual networking opportunities to fill that void. From informative events about Human Resources and Wellness in midst of the crisis to Legislative Forum, the ADP made every effort to connect and inform our membership during this time.

Membership 101 is a program the Area Development Partnership has hosted for several years for current and new members of the organization to learn more about the programs, services, and benefits that we offer. In response to COVID-19 and to reach more people about the advantages of being a part of the ADP, we had several members of our team create informative videos about our organization. The videos covered everything you need to know about what we do here at the ADP. If you’d like to watch these videos, check out our social media pages.

MEMBERSHIP 101 SERIES

With a combined reach over nearly 7,000 on our social media platforms, exposure is one of the many benefits of joining the Area Development Partnership. We made sure that we promoted our membership in any way that we could to ensure their success with the many regulations of COVID. From informing the community of new hours, curbside pick-up, and the many ways they were adapting to the crisis, we advertised relentlessly through our social media platforms and our weekly e-blast, The Rundown.

MEMBER PROMOTION

Your economic development team has continued to work several projects during these challenging times and has also leveraged this opportunity to better prepare the community for when the economy does come roaring back. Site development work has continued at the I-59 Supply Chain Park near the Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport, and the Community Development team achieved “Work Ready” certification for Forrest County during the quarantine, and only lacks a few more tests for Lamar County to achieve this status as well. One unique opportunity the crisis provided was being able to host numerous Site Selection Consultants from around the country on virtual video conferences and keep Greater Hattiesburg and its assets in front of them and their global clients.

CONTINUING ECONOMIC PROGRESS

In the midst of a pandemic, the ADP’s mission is still to improve the quality of life for its community. PBYP partnered with Vitalant and Lake Terrace Convention Center for an Emergency Blood Drive in May to help during the pandemic. The ADP also donated meals to AAA Ambulance Service, Forrest General Hospital, and Merit Health Wesley as a reminder of our continuous support and appreciation to our first responders. The ADP also worked closely with Green Bay Converting, Baldwin Transfer, United Way of Southeast Mississippi, and Christian Services to distribute a donation of over 27,000 rolls of paper products to area families in need.

LENDING A HELPING HAND

$

We know the value of strong Career Technical Education (CTE) programming in our local high schools - they are preparing our future workforce and leaders! So when schools closed, we created a series of webinars to develop, connect, and inspire the CTE students of Greater Hattiesburg. We had 100 participants from five districts tune in as we used ADP staff and partners to share insights, tips and knowledge on the local economy, leadership, first jobs and more! It was awesome having Nelson Haskin (Blu Jazz), Misha Newell (Sofidel), and Sheriff Charlie Sims (Forrest County) participate in a lively panel discussion on their first jobs and professional journeys.

CTE COLLABORATE

Since 2017, the ADP and multiple partners in Forrest and Jones Counties have collaborated on a 400-acre distribution-focused park at the Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport. By tapping resources from the local and state levels, we have polished the I-59 Supply Chain Park into a gem among distribution sites in the Gulf South. Work completed includes clearing of trees, planting grass, and repaving the entrance road. During COVID-19, we turned our attention to completing a master plan and creating a marketing video to share with global site selection consultants. Logistical advantages will make this park a top candidate for warehousing and distribution projects as the economy resurfaces from the coronavirus pandemic.

ADP: What are the most fulfilling or gratifying aspects of your role as a Representative in the U.S. House?

PALAZZO: There have been so many gratifying and fulfilling aspects of serving as a member of Congress. It’s not easy to choose what one or two things that stand out as most gratifying. I am coming up on a decade of service to South Mississippi. Over the past ten years, I have had the opportunity to accomplish a lot, and during the past ten years, I have worked on building relationships. These relationships led me to the privilege of serving on the House Appropriations Committee. As the senior appropriator for Mississippi, I have the opportunity to make a direct impact on allocating federal discretionary spending and that is a unique role in Congress. Whether that’s seeing first hand a National Security Cutter being built at HII, the impact of an Economic Development Administration grant has on the development of the Regions Mortgage Center, a Department of Transportation grant improving access in Downtowan Hattiesburg, driving important research dollars to USM, or funding to the US Army Corps of Engineers which can then work collaboratively with Chad’s team in making Eagle One South Mississippi’s premier mega site. My role in Congress is fulfilling and I am honored to serve the great people of South Mississippi.

Service to our country is very important to you - what inspires you to serve and what would you tell a young person considering a future in public service today?

I come from a family of service members. My grandfather served as a Marine in World War II, my mother was a teacher, and we all hail from Mississippi. Being a Mississippian all my life, I was raised to put others before myself and show hospitality to everyone. Some people have an experience that is a life-changing moment, but that was not the case for me, serving others is in my blood. I would tell a young person who sees a future in public service to pursue it. There is nothing so fulfilling then lending someone a helping hand, and sometimes that can be life-changing for both the public servant and the constituent.

Membership Appreciation

PROGRAM CONGRESSMAN STEVEN PALAZZO

What do you see as the most challenging issues the country faces today?

I believe it is my responsibility as a member of Congress to Preserve the American way of life. I strongly believe in protecting our values strengthening families. The American way of life as we know it is under attack.

As a current member of the National Guard, how does your membership and past military service to our nation uniquely impact the work you do in Washington?

Being a Congressman and a Guardsman, I have the chance to hear from so many Mississippians about issues they face through both of my roles. I’ve been able to transform concerns into change and assist people in such a unique way which is really what it all boils down to. However, my service in the military has been able to provide me a unique perspective on policy and how Congress operates. I am able to apply the skills and mentality I’ve come to know in my military service to the work we do in Congress.

Where do you hope to see Mississippi in the next 10 years?

Disasters such as the BP oil spill have provided an opportunity through the Gulf Coast Restoration Fund to generate increased economic activity over the next ten years. Mississippi must choose projects wisely, identify ones that will help grow our economy throughout the state, allowing us to focus on workforce development and infrastructure. Capitalize on our unique geographic resources like ports to roads to rail inititiaves. I also believe small businesses are the backbone of our economy. Over the next ten years Congress’ interest in small business must continue to remain high. We must continue to support programs that assist in recovery from this global pandemic along with creating a favorable tax environment that attracts more companies like Kohler Engines and Sofidel to do business in MS.

In place of the April Off the Clock, Pine Belt Young Professionals held a Virtual Happy Hour via Zoom. Several PBYP memberscame together during the pandemic to enjoy a night of trivia and networking.

Over the first quarter of 2020, PBYP collected items for Give & Take Kitchen's Weekend Backpack Program. This program was held in partnership with University Baptist Church in which they delivered 40 packs of weekend food to Thames Elementary.

In light of the pandemic that has impacted our local restaurants, PBYP has chosen to highlight them through its #TakeOutThursday campaign. Over the summer months, they will highlight 5 ADP member restaurants each Thursday and encourage Greater Hattiesburg to eat local.

The next PBYP Blue Plate Luncheon will be held on Thursday, July 23rd on Zoom at11:00 a.m. Dr. Joe Paul will be speaking on "How to Stay Motivated" and will discuss setting goals, having a positive mindset, and capitalizing on your strengths during unmotivating times.
