WHY POOR LISTENING ?
Do you know…
People can think faster than they can speak.
People speak 125 words per minute. However we have mental capacity
to understand someone speaking at 400 words per minutes. But we
are using only 25% of our mental capacity.
• Listening is one of the best gift we can offer
• People are more happy and free when they are listened to.
• When we are listened to, ideas begin to grow
• Break up the barriers between people
• Listening forms a bond of respect
“If speaking is silver, then listening is gold” – Turkish proverb
The R.E.H.E.A.R Technique
• Repeat
• Empathize
• Help with questions
• Empty your mind
• Attend to speaker
• Read between lines
Overcoming Listening Distractions
• Engage yourself. Ask questions/take notes
• Replace emotions with empathy
• Listen more than just your ears
• Separate facts from feelings
• Non-judgemental while taking in information
• Acknowledging speakers in ways that encourage them to
continue speaking
• Attempting to advance the speaker’s ideas to next step
In Fact, bosses spend about 40% of their time
listening, but only 25% on effective listening.
“ Studies have shown that immediately after listening
to a 10-minutes oral presentation, the average listener
has heard, understood, and retained 50% of what was
said.
Within 48hours, that drop off another 50% to final level 25% efficiency ”
Gail Miller – Washington State University
• Ignore: No effort to listen
• Fake listening: Pretending to listen
• Choices of listening: Listen only if you want
• Focus listening : Focus to what other said and compare it with your own
experince
• Emphathy Listening: Listen and respond to what other said fully with heart and interest
Strategies for Effective Listening
• Decide what your goals are for the conversation
• Be aware of your options
• When to speak and listen
• Planning what to say when you speak
• Active listening
Practice getting whatever you want to say said in 60 second or less… if someone is interesting in what you say they will ask a follow-up questions.
• Beyond ‘Open Door Policy’
• Steps of Listening:

- Speak and listen – eye to eye
- Resist the urge to interrupt
- Listen without bias
