I hope you and your families are safe and well,

I am writing to you as your Head of Year in our May

news bulletin of the lock down. Over the last few

difficult months the true community spirit at Bourne

End Academy has been clear to see and I have

never been prouder to call myself a Key Worker and

to be affiliated with a school which has true heart

and spirit. I look forward to our weekly assembly and

hearing your thoughts on the lockdown as I believe it’s crucial to stay in touch, keeping moral high

and enhancing our well-being as a year group.

Furthermore, weekly phone calls from the sixth form pastoral team have shown you’ve all been busy

at home combining work life with school life. Students have mentioned that they’re still working in

shops and supermarkets helping to feed the country and I commend you on your actions.

The INTERACT TEAM has been working with The Rotary Club in supporting various charities across

Buckinghamshire and it has been inspirational to see their work within this area. Students have also

raised money through the Virgin Media 5K run for the NHS and have set up Pub quizzes on a Friday

night to support others.

It is crucial that we all Stay Alert and Stay Home, helping us as a community and a nation, in moving

forward. As difficult as it is, please continue to abide by these rules. I look forward to seeing you all

back at Bourne End Academy where your studies will continue in preparation for the next part of

your academic journey. Stay safe.

WHAT DID YOU DO? THE LOCK-DOWN-LOW-DOWN

The average day in lockdown as a student, is different to being in school. My day starts at 9am where I log onto ClassCharts and Microsoft Teams, to see that no work has been set. At 9:04, it appears. Most of the tasks set by teachers are booklets or PowerPoints, which take me longer than average for the amount of lessons I have a day, resulting in my desk chair to lose its gas! I’m also amused by how fast teachers reply, but I think

they are getting annoyed by the amount of times I am emailing them. It’s not all bad. Regular breaks and lunch consist of fitness through TikTok! Scrolling & staying in regular

contact (through TikTok). At the end of every week, Friday at 4pm, the Snapchat group known as ‘Nyle and Ryan’s Affair’ meet at the Virtual Zoom Pub. Each week, a new quizmaster takes centre stage at the ‘Cavern Club’ in Liverpool (this is unessential travel and I ask you not to take this seriously!). I have also done an array of activities in the household. The list is as follows:

Painting and Decorating the house.

Interior design

Car mechanic

Baking; Baking; Baking ;

Singing and TikToks

Watching ‘Gangs of London’ every day.

ChairboysLive! (those that know me should expect me to continue to follow my team).

Reciting lines from ‘Come Fly with Me’ and ‘Little Britain’.

The coronavirus will not stop me being me. Being locked inside will not stop me being me. As Miranda Hart said: “It’s been 26 hours, and I’ve done everything. All the films, but not all the films, naughty! I have had 6 baths. Most room service meals. It’s like all the best bits of being ill, but you’re well”. I hope everyone is keeping well and following government guidelines.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION NEWS

students within each grade for each subject, in order

to help exam boards with their very challenging job of

Start by getting to know yourself. What are your strengths? What kind of person are you? What job might suit you? Activity 1) Take the 5-minute fun Buzz Quiz to find out which ‘animal’ you are and which area you

might like to work in. Activity 2) Inspired? The 15-minute Prospects Career Planner Quiz continues the search for your perfect career. Activity 3) Which path from school into work might suit you? Listen to 3 very different stories from

Find out what jobs are out there. There are loads you’ll never even have heard of – and plenty of exciting opportunities to discover. Activity 1) Listen to real-life stories on iCould.

Activity 2) See where your favourite subject could lead on BBC Bitesize Careers. Activity 3) Chat to

your family about jobs. What got your parents/carers interested in their first job? How did their

interests change over their career?

3 What skills are

employers

looking for?

We hear plenty about how important qualifications likes GCSEs are, but skills are equally vital. But what actually are skills? Activity 1) Watch this quick introduction to the skills that employers want, followed by this clip predicting the skills needed by 2030. Activity 2) List all your hobbies and interests (at school and outside). Write next to each one the skills

these have helped you develop. For example, drama is great for communication skills; sport helps

develop teamwork.

4 Listen to

employers

Employers can’t visit your school right now to share their experiences, but you can still find out more about the people behind the job titles. Activity 1) Listen to real-life stories about different careers on iCould.

Activity 2) Look at the Speakers for Schools schedule of upcoming live virtual 20-minute talks and see

who inspires you. Watch direct from the web anonymously without logging in. Get an adult to check

you are set up correctly!

5 Find out what

going to work is

really like

OK you can’t physically enter the workplace right now, but there’s plenty you can do to get a good idea of what goes on. Activity 1) Get advice and stories from ‘The Nine to Five: Five Teens, Five Industries’ TV series on the

ultimate work experience then watch it here.

Activity 2) Take part in virtual work experience with Barclays Life Skills through an interactive video.

Help solve problems and complete real-life tasks.

free and you just hold the ‘Control Key and Click’ to try any or all of the ACTIVITIES.

Look at the parts you’re interested in – you don’t have to do everything.

6 Understanding

the ‘job market’

It helps to understand how the world of work … works!

Activity 1) Find out how jobs are divided up into industry sectors using Career Pilot. Choose 3 jobs you might like, then use Careerometer to compare them. Activity 2) Imagine you’ve finished your education and are looking for a job in Buckinghamshire. Did you know that space, creative, advanced engineering and digital health are growing sectors? Check out what’s available locally right now. Explore the results by adding a job title or skill in the search bar to the left.

7 Step into the

NHS

The NHS is in the news all the time, but did you know there are over 350 roles available within it (many non-medical) and it’s the single biggest UK employer? Activity 1) Step into the NHS and take the quick and easy ‘Map your career’ test to identify roles you might like. Activity 2) On the same website, explore the real-life stories, listen to what staff say about working

there and look at the Careers A-Z.

8 Explore

apprenticeships

Have you considered doing an apprenticeship after school? Keep an open mind about alternatives to university.

Activity 1) Find out what an apprenticeship is and what the different types are at the Government’s

Apprenticeship Hub and then watch case studies here.

Activity 2) Play around with Find an Apprenticeship: select an area of work you’re interested in, enter

your postcode and just get ideas for the future. Activity 3) Want to find out more? This interactive

student guide is aimed at Years 12 & 13, but if you’re younger you’ll still get lots of out of it.

9 Visit a university Have you thought about going to uni? Which one might be right for you?

Activity 1) See the different options to help you decide.

Activity 2) Do some armchair travelling and tour universities around the country: see what it's like on

campus and what facilities are available.

10 Get ready for

work!

It’s never too early to start preparing to enter the job market.

Activity 1) Visit Fledlink: read about ‘Building Your Professional Brand’ and then watch the videos ‘The

Importance of Networking’ and ‘CV Master Class’.

Activity 2) Write (or develop further) your own CV. Read the tips at Success at School then use the

‘What should I include when I write a CV?’ checklist.
