Culture care: diversity and universality theory.
It is based on :
1. Care is the core of nursing.
2. Culture is the learned and shared values and norms ofa specific group of persons which influences theirviews on life and death.
3. Culture care diversity refers to the numerous differentmeaning given to a particular action by different
groups.4. Culture care universality recognizes that there are

What has this to do with nursing
care??
A culturally competent nurse can:
Assess the patient accurately. (know
that behaviours that are accepted in oneculture are not accepted in another)
Interact with the patient with out
offending them. Bajans neverlook you in the

Cultural competence and access
We deny patients access if we are notculturally competent by:
E.g. 1. Assigning a male nurses to assessfemale patients whose cultures does not allowthis.
E.g.. 2. If no one is available to speak their
language. E.g.3. If we misinterpret their actions and
assign a wrong diagnosis.

Cultural competence and equity
We deny the patient equity if:
we judge them according to our culture
(Some cultures view crying as weakness and willnot manifest signs of pain while others are
highly animated when experiencing pain....
Which one has the rights to pain
management?)

How can we become culturally
competent?
1. Do not judge! Explore your self.
2. Do not make assumptions based on your own culture.
3. Explain every detail (five times if necessary).
4. Ask about how they do it at home. (self medication/alternative therapies).
5. Be formal with older persons many cultures do notcondone familiarity.
6. Do not become insulted if their way is not your way.7. Take the time to learn about those cultures you
encounter frequently.
