A question that has been generating plenty of arguements and discussions for a long time:

« Are female politicians better than male? »

Let’s see what the Italian students know and think about that!

In Italy, women had to fight a long and hard war to get the same rights that men have.They got the right to vote in 1946 and it sounds like aparadox because they had to fight to get something that theyshould have always had! Right now, in Italy, we have a lawthat establishes the ‘pink quotas’, that are the minimumnumber of women that must be present in our politic life.

A little bit of history

This year, Premier Matteo Renzi announced Friday that his new cabinet would be made up of 16 ministers, half of whom are women - the first time parity between the sexes has been achieved in an Italian executive. Italy's new PM will have to prove his changes are more than cosmetic and create real equality – and real jobs – in the country.

Some psycologists said that female politicians are better than male because it’s hard for a woman to be successful as a

politician but that little number of women that can be this way are very good at what they do.

We can take as examples Queen Elizabeth I, Margaret Thatcher and, more recently, Angela Merkel. They all have proven to be

highly competent, highly effective leaders, and they all had significant impacts on their countries.

Some studies have shown that women tend to consider their personal opinion, even when it is requested to be impartial,

more than men do!

They are also less inclined to project themselves and their own will onto the decision-making process.

This debate would have no end because both men and women have

plenty of pros and cons but we like to think that this is the correct answer to

that question: « Intelligent people make better politicians than

men and women! »Gender is not important when it comes to actions: a good

person who makes good choices is going to do good things for the world.
