The ArcX Europe capabilities
Laser claddingLaser cladding is a technique that bonds alloys to the
surface with a low degree of dilution. It is particularly
suited to use in high-volume automated applications.
It is a welding method that enables a metallic bonding
with the base material substrate.
A high-energy laser beam creates an intense heat
input, and thus alloys are bonded to the surface with
a low degree of dilution (<5%).

7kW diode laser with various optical configurations
for round and rectangle spots. Ten-axis robot motion
system.
Process information• Cladding process• Dilution: 3~5%• Deposition rate: up to 8kg/hour
and 1m2/hour• Deposition thickness: 0.5~2mm• Suitable for Fe/Ni/Co base powder• Suitable for automation
Laser case: Oil and gas Drill string stabilisers used inoil exploration are protectedagainst erosion, abrasion and at times impact by laser-cladding the raised fins of the stabiliser with Rockit® from Höganäs. The laser process is desirable due to the low heat input and the precise control of the deposit’s grain structure.

Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) is a welding method,
thus it enables a metallic bonding with the base
material. It is ideal for high unit volume automated
applications, such as exhaust valves. This technique
offers low base metal dilution and can be used with
a wide range of consumables.
It can be used both on cast iron and bronze base
materials, including bronze containing zinc.

Plasma Transferred Arc Welding
PTA case: AutomotiveEngine valves for motorcycles, cars and heavy commercial vehicles are PTA welded with Co- or Fe-based powder to resist abrasion and corrosion to ensure longer lifetime in modern automotive combustion engines.
Process information• Welding process• Dilution: 5~15%• Deposition rate: up to 20kg/hour• Deposition thickness: 1-5 mm• Suitable for Fe/Ni/Co base alloy powder • Suitable for automation
6
Flame sprayingThis two-step process (spraying followed by fusing)
results in a dense coating and a metallurgical bond.
It is easy to automate and can be adapted for the
spraying of cylindrical parts.
Process information• Spray and fusing process• Metallurgical bonding• Deposition rate: up to 9kg/hour• Suitable for Ni/Co self-fluxing alloys
• Mostly for cylindrical parts
Flame spray case: Glass mould industryPlungers for glass bottle production are protected against wear and corrosion by flame spraying followed by subsequent fusing with Surfit® from Höganäs.

Microstructure Analysis and Metallography Metallography, the study of the structure of metals and alloys, is a fundamental study used to understand the physical properties of metal powder consumables and cladded or thermal sprayed deposits. Metallography is the first step in most investigations, used both in material development and as trouble shooting to identify the root cause for application failures and their suggested corrections.
At Höganäs, our metallographic laboratories are well equipped with state of the art sample preparation equipment, light optical microscopes, table top scanning electron microscopes, and field emission gun scanning electron microscopes. The EDS detector installed on the scanning electron microscopes provides not only a quantitative elemental analysis, but also line scans and elemental mapping of the different phases present in a deposit.
Wear and corrosion labHard faced components need to perform well when
exposed to wear and corrosion in severe working environments. A complete prediction of wear and corrosion resistance of the components in real working environments
is of course not possible to perform in laboratory conditions.
However, by performing laboratory model testing/ranking according to ISO, ASTM and other standardising authorities, Höganäs tribology and corrosion laboratories rank wear and corrosion resistance of the hard faced components. Skilled
personnel and state-of-art testing equipment generate relevant and reliable data for resistance to abrasive, erosive,
and adhesive wear as well as data for resistance to salt spray mist, pitting, crevice and other type of corrosion.
Training and educationIn recognising the importance of continuous learning and training, ArcX brings specialists from all over the world to conduct training and education in materials, processes and applications. Having a broad experience, we can provide comprehensive training, covering a large variety of industries. Höganäs continues to be dedicated at organising different seminars and workshops, both at Höganäs facilities, and on site at customers and end-users.
In addition to coating processes equipment, ArcX also
benefits from Höganäs’ overall R&D compentencies,
by not only having access to our wear and corrosion
testing, but also our metallographic labs, where
theoretical calculations in various simulation tools such
as ThermoCalc and JMatPr can be applied. Furthermore,
an extensive range of state-of-the-art materials and
powder testing equipment are available in-house.
