Outreach ACTIVITY TITLE: ARCTIC ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS (CLASSROOM VISITS) Submitted by: Alyssa Murdoch, Masters Candidate University of Waterloo Waterloo, Ontario [email protected] Purpose: To teach concepts relating to how animals are adapted to surviving in the harsh Arctic climate Date: Nov 25 & 29, Dec 2, 2010 Location: West Humber Junior Middle School (Northern Toronto) Who (target audience): Grades 1‐7 Description of Activity Arctic Animal Adaptations Lesson Plan Outline Introduction (10‐15 mins): Concepts to introduce: Ecosystem, adaptations, Inuit people. Introduce myself and briefly discuss what I do Geographic perspective: use map to show the Arctic relative to us Brainstorming: Have students come up with Arctic ecosystem characteristics (e.g. cold temperature, daylight fluctuations, animals, habitat etc.) Using props collected from the field (e.g. ptarmigan feathers, musk‐ox hair, arctic charr muscle), discuss how these parts allow these animals to survive in the Arctic. Summarize types of Arctic adaptations: camouflage, warmth, seasonal feeding cycles Main Activity (40 mins): Blubber glove Materials per group of 4: 1 bowl 2 thermometers 1 control glove 1 survival suit glove (made up of various materials, examples below) 1 large Ziploc bag clothespins 2 stones Ice Paper Pencil/crayons 2 jars Altered to age group – younger kids have a more general qualitative look at blubber (lard gloves) as insulation and learn: How does blubber help Arctic animals stay warm? What does it mean to insulate? Discuss different animals that use blubber
