Preface
Dear Library Users,
It gives me a great pleasure to bring out the issue of library bulletin. This is the third library bulleting being brought to you from our wonderful Lavale Campus. We made a appeal to the entire staff and students to make suggestions to improve the services rendered by our library staff and suggestions for improvement of the overall performance of our library services as a whole.
We have received some of the suggestions for the improvement of our library services. We have taken note of it and we would like to incorporate these suggestions for the said purpose.
We are pleased to announce that our new services like new arrivals, table of contents of periodicals, list of case studies are indicated in the library bulletin.
We would like to announce that the information regarding library materials and news would be uploaded on our Web OPAC shortly.
We believe that there is always scope to improve and hence your valuable suggestions are welcome.

Lateral Thinking
Many hundreds of years ago in a small Italian town, a merchant had the misfortune
of owing a large sum of money to a moneylender. The moneylender, who was old
and ugly, fancied the merchant's beautiful daughter. So he proposed a bargain. He
said he would forgo the merchant's debt if he could marry his daughter. Both the
merchant and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. So the cunning money-
lender suggested that they let providence decide the matter. He told them that he
would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty moneybag. Then the girl
would have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she
would become his wife and her father's debt would be forgiven. If she picked the
white pebble she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven.
But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail. They were
standing on a pebble-strewn path in the merchant's garden. As they talked, the
moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-
eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the
bag. He then asked the girl to pick a pebble from the bag. Now, imagine you were
standing in the merchant's garden.
What would you have done if you were the girl? If you had to advise her, what
would you have told her? Careful analysis would produce three possibilities:
1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble.
2. The girl should show that there were two black pebbles in the bag and expose the
moneylender as a cheat.
3. The girl should pick a black pebble and sacrifice herself in order to save her
father from his debt and imprisonment.
Take a moment to ponder over the story. The above story is used with the hope
that it will make us appreciate the difference between lateral and logical thinking.
The girl's dilemma cannot be solved with traditional logical thinking. Think of the

consequences if she chooses the above logical answers. What would you
recommend the girl does?
The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at
it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately
became lost among all the other pebbles. "Oh, how clumsy of me," she said. "But
never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell
which pebble I picked." Since the remaining pebble is black, it must be assumed that
she had picked the white one. And since the money-lender dared not admit his
dishonesty, the girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely
advantageous one.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Most complex problems do have a solution it is only that
we must attempt to think.
Lateral thinking is the popular term for a creative, imaginative approach to
problem-solving that changes one's perceptions and conception of a problem,
allegedly contrasted with ‘linear’ or ‘logical’ thinking. The contrast is misleading, in
that logic does not tell you how to think, but only how to avoid inconsistency.

Phantoms in the Brain: Probing the Mysteries of the Human Mind Authors: V. S. Ramachandran, Sandra Blakeslee

"Who am I? What is the meaning of my existence, especially if you are from India? Why do I laugh? Why do I dream, why do I enjoy art, music and poetry? Does my mind consist entirely of the activity of neurons in my brain? If so, what scope is there for free will? It is the peculiar recursive quality of these questions as the brain struggles to understand itself that makes neurology so fascinating.” One look at the quote above is enough to appreciate the breadth and depth of Dr. Ramachandran’s ambitions in the
field of neurology. Rather than being satisfied with the basic biological functioning of the various areas of the brain, the authors keep probing endlessly to gain insight into the unknown – that is the link between the fist-sized lump of tissue in our heads and the final frontier - consciousness. The tool of inquiry chosen by Dr. Ramachandran is the phenomenon of ‘phantom limbs’ - the sensation that an amputated or missing limb is still attached to the body and is moving appropriately with other body parts. By understanding how the brain represents the body (‘body image’) and how that image can change, the authors seek to explain all sorts of odd syndromes such as
Charles Bonnet syndrome, a disease that causes patients to have complex
visual hallucinations
Balint’s syndrome, a disjointed psychic paralysis of gaze
Capgras syndrome, in which there is no loss of recognition of faces or of the
ability to experience emotion but there is an inability to link the two
and many more. Each line of inquiry usually involves ingenious experiments devised by Dr. Ramachandran and his research colleagues; these serve to test various hypotheses made by the researchers on how various parts of the brain interact with each other while we see, read, talk, recognize, laugh, dream and meditate. Every once in a while, the reader has to stop and confirm that this is indeed a book originating from the medical world, and not a text on Eastern philosophy. Despite statements like this one – “Your own body is a phantom, one that your brain has temporarily constructed purely for convenience.” – the authors manage to keep a

tight link between the abstract and the neuro-scientific at every stage in this easy-to-read book. The last chapter – ‘Do Martians See Red?’ – gets deep into the consciousness question. Regardless of your personal leanings on this topic, you will appreciate the authors’ analysis of how various parts of the brain (particularly the temporal lobes) play a central role in consciousness and awareness. Let me end with this quote from the Preface: “Every scientist knows that the best research emerges from a dialectic between speculation and healthy skepticism.”

Personality Not Included: Why Companies Lose Their

Doing the right thing is, luckily, a logical starting point for any company, country or person struggling with the idea of how to

cultivate a personality – and in the end - when boiled down to its basic elements, cultivating personality is one of the easiest things in the world to do.
As such, many of the overall themes of the chapter’s within this book are made so relatable that the golf analogy alluded to above acts as the perfect compliment to the more traditional business interpretations, for example:
“Faceless” used to work because big meant credible. This no longer works. Simply put, large corporations, who’ve based their past success on metrics like price point, rather than relationship cultivation will soon be staring into the face of a rapidly moving new market they can no longer comprehend enough to tame.
Discusses how accidental spokespeople are speaking for your brand. Embrace them. As Subway learned when it found Jared, the people and elements that will shape the story of your company’s personality are likely already out there – you just have to listen.
We find that back stories establish a foundation of credibility. You need one. Surly Beer has been around less than two years. But there is a real, personifiable story behind its creation. There is for every company. If you think yours is the exception, your targeted customers most likely will, as well, and choose to spend their time with someone a bit more interesting.
Fear of change leads to barriers. Finding your authority overcomes them. If NBC were a chubby little kid and old Saturday Night Live clips were bits of inexpensive – yet delicious – candy he refused to share - how would you feel about that kid’s personality? Now, go out to YouTube and conduct a search for Will Ferrell + Robert Goulet. How do you feel about NBC’s corporate personality?
Of course, sharing themes is only one half of the battle – and also almost exactly one half of this book. Students and kings of industry alike are encouraged to hold this book close at bay.

The Back of The Napkin By Dan Roam,
The book is broken up into four sections and two technical appendices. Interspersed within the text are countless line drawings to be used as reference. Apropos to the central thesis of the book, it actually becomes quite difficult to read through the text, pause to look at a graphic and then return to the text. Instead, the reader will likely read through the text while blurring over the sketches and then stop to focus on one or two charts in detail. In his "Introduction," Roam explains the fundamentals of visual thinking using the napkin as both a metaphor and a visual cue. While many of us feel that we can't draw, the same isn't true of kindergarteners. Who's wrong? Well, using sketches not that much better than a primary school students, Roam demonstrates that neither is wrong. It's just that adults have forgotten how to express themselves visually. Roam then literally illustrates the breakthrough experience that led him to his conclusion.
Part two of the book: "Discovering Ideas" is exceptional. Here, Roam lays out the toolkit that any executive or designer should have in his or her arsenal to use visual expression as a presentation device. As anyone who's looked at spreadsheets or typical presentation materials can attest, rows of numbers or pages of bullets are often enough to make one's eyes glaze over. Since the book is targeted at a general audience, he next explains which visuals should accompany which concepts such that the audience is neither bored nor confused. One sketch, in particular, is among the best encapsulations of how to present thinking in a visual manner that I've ever seen.
Part three, "Developing Ideas" walks the reader through not when, but how to use the tools Roam has provided. I was pleased to see the progression from a blank napkin to a visual discourse on problem solving. Since a blank page can be intimidating, The Back of the Napkin actually walks the reader through this process, starting with a blank napkin and then drawing the most important part of the puzzle right in the middle of the page. Much as I once taught my CAD students, it's hard to go from directly from concept to finished product. Instead, the easiest beginning is to start with what you know. So if a student was designing a couch and came to me confused by the number of ways to approach the problem, I'd begin by asking them what they knew about their couch. Usually either the footprint or the seat-height was definite. So I'd have them draw the footprint on the ground plane from there, the next step of the problem was at least a little clearer. Roam takes the same approach: Want to draw the competitive landscape? Well, start with yourself, because after all, you know you're there. Then the rest will follow quite easily.
The fourth chapter of the book, entitled "Selling Ideas," explains how to make the transition with which the reader may already have had subconscious trouble. Just

as it's occasionally difficult to rapidly transition from the text of the book to the graphics and back, when thinking has been done visually, it can be tough to explain it in words. Using the case study method, Roam talks (and shows) the reader just how to do that with ease.
By the end of the book, I had no doubt that hearing or seeing a presentation from Dan Roam would be a compelling experience. My only regret is that he wasn't here to narrate it for me, because at times it became difficult to navigate between the text and the graphics. There was simply too much information here to have portrayed through one channel alone. Perhaps the best complement I can give is that by the end of reading it, I would have loved to have seen an all-graphics version of the book as well; and saying that about a non-artist's work is high praise indeed.
Imagining India: Ideas For The New Century By Nilekani Nandan
Leaders like Mr. Nilekani show us the way and when they share their views about modern, changing India and fill it with anecdotes, a young patriot like me can only ‘read on.’ There was a lot to read - the book is high on content and very opinionated. Mr. Nilekani’s father, in his own words, was an “ardent Nehruvian” and Mr. Nilekani was one of the founders of arguably one of Infosys, India’s most renowned companies the fact is as ironical as it is the insignia of the “change” that has, and is, becoming to us. In fact this is what the first chapter - Notes from an accidental entrepreneur is all about. Subsequent sections cover diverse issues and is structured into 4 parts dealing with issues in various stages of gestation.
Mr. Nilekani is indeed an “explainer” and terms that one hears about only in intellectually stimulating discussions are brought to the drawing rooms and coffee-table discussions thanks to the ease with which the author can blend them with the anecdotal narrative - something which only Mr. Nilekani - with his diverse world-view is able to accomplish.
I particularly liked 2 things about the way the book has been structured:
Certain areas which required explanations have detailed notes for reference There is a “Timeline of Key events” - where in 8 pages, important socio-economic and political events have been tracked from 1757 onwards. The events are hand-picked and is a wonderful “101″ for those who want to know how India evolved in all of 10 minutes. - And for those who do, this can serve as a ready reckoner!

In the year 2007, the world’s largest telecom company in terms of revenue, Vodafone Plc (Vodafone) made a major foray into the Indian telecom market by acquiring a 52% stake in the Indian telecom market by acquiring a 52% stake in the Indian telecom company, Hutchison Essar Ltd (Hutchison Essar), through a deal with the Hong Kong-based Hutchison Telecommunication International Ltd. (HTIL). It was the biggest deal in the Indian telecom market. Vodafone’s main motive in going in for the deal was its strategy of expanding into emerging and high growth markets like India.
