Woodcreek Junior High School has been participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program since the 2008-2009 school year, raising a total of $38,640 since that time; making an incredible impact on the lives of cancer patients and in the direction of cancer research. This year, under the supervision of Mrs. Eliza Benson and Mrs. Amy Blankenship, Woodcreek Junior High School raised an amazing $10,398 in a single day. Friday, November 6 the school made history and beat their own record with an activity called Delay the Day. Students, teachers, and parents got on board as a community in the effort to save lives, bringing in money throughout the day. The Student Council was tasked with counting the money under the premise that class instruction could not start until all of the currency was counted. Mrs. Benson and Mrs. Blankenship are passionate individuals who challenged students to raise at least $20 during one class period and many classes rose to the challenge and beyond. These students used their free time to watch movies and play games – they delayed their school day to make someday, a day without blood cancers, today! Mrs. Benson and Mrs. Blankeship’s tenacity, paired with the administrative,

teacher and community support helped the school to have an immeasurable effect on the patients that The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has the pleasure to serve. Announcements to get the students excited about the campaign and continuous motivation from Mrs. Benson, Mrs. Blankeship, and their team at the school brought this campus to new heights. They were able to rise to the challenge; simply to support those who cannot. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Texas Gulf Coast Chapter and the Student Series program are extremely grateful of such an amazing partnership. Way to go Timberwolves – you are truly an inspiration.

Typically when you think about a gym, it’s only for those that live in the immediate area, but one such facility has started to gain attention from those that will likely never walk in for a workout. Medical Fitness Pros, a medical exercise training studio that started in Katy, has regularly worked with clients from downtown Houston, The Woodlands, Clearlake, and Kingwood, commuting as much as an hour each way. Over the last two years though, they have started getting contacted by residents of Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Massachusetts, and even the country of Lebanon.

“The reason we typically hear from people in other states is because they are looking for personal trainers that specialize in understanding how to help them when they have back pain, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and osteoporosis,” says Jason Hodge, founder of Medical Fitness Pros. “We do offer a service that is fairly rare in the fitness industry, and it’s an honor to be sought after from all of these different areas of the country.”

Medical Fitness Pros’ medical exercise training services “bridge the gap” between healthcare and fitness. It is the implementation of safe and effective exercise programs based on patient’s medical conditions. While medical exercise training is not physical therapy, it does include pre-hab and post-rehab conditioning training services.

“We believe that exercise is an effective

way to manage a variety of health conditions and injuries,” says Hodge. In January 2000, Jason Hodge was hit by an 18-wheeler that left him with severe back pain. He credits exercise before and after to helping him overcome and manage his back pain. Continues Hodge, “I know in my own personal life, exercise has been instrumental to keeping me healthy and managing my pain.”

The staff is comprised of personal trainers that have helped clients lose 50, 60, or even 100 lbs, but they all undergo a 6-month training course to educate them on the proper way to work with over 60 different medical conditions and injuries. “We firmly believe in doing everything we can to manage the medical condition or injury first so our clients can move better and easier. This approach helps our clients lose weight easier and quicker than trying to ‘push through’ joint pain,” explains Hodge.

Medical Fitness Pros works with a variety of clients. They have clients who seek them because they struggle to exercise in a gym due to limitations, fears, or uncertainty about how to exercise properly, but they also work with athletes that are injured, trying to overcome a nagging injury, or want to decrease their likelihood of being injured.

If this sounds like the Katy personal training facility for you, you can contact Medical Fitness Pros at 281-500-6055 to schedule a complimentary consultation. or visit www.medicalfitnesspros.com/.

Katy/Brookshire Ducks Unlimited Earning Spot on President’s Elite List

The President’s Elite are among Ducks Unlimited’s most prestigious volunteer chapters throughout the nation. Every year, the list is reserved for the chapters that raise $100,000 to $250,000 for DU’s habitat conservation work. In 2015 Texas had an impressive 16 chapters included on the list.

The Katy/Brookshire Chapter will celebrate this honor at one of two annual fundraising events, its annual Patos de Mayo Crawfish Boil May 6 at American Shooting Centers. Tickets are available in person at Allegiance Bank, Cane Island Outfitters and Big N’s BBQ and Crawfish, or online at www.katyducks.info. The 2016 title Sponsor for the Crawfish Boil, AMCAP Mortgage, and fellow supporting sponsors, Cane Island Outfitters, Sean McGowan Insurance, and Merchant’s Choice Payment Solutions Partners are proud to continue to play an important part in the success of the Katy/Brookshire Chapter and look forward to the May 6 event.

“These fundraising events are the backbone of DU’s habitat conservation efforts, and the volunteers who make up these chapters are the force making a difference for North American waterfowl populations,” said DU President Paul Bonderson. “It takes a great deal of effort to achieve the President’s Elite level, and these chapters deserve to be congratulated by every person who enjoys the outdoors. The Katy-Brookshire chapter won this honor for the Lone Star State, coming in at number 54 in the President’s Elite, making it the number 83 chapter in the nation, out of more than 2,600 DU chapters nationwide that host more than 3,900 fundraising events throughout the year. DU’s event fundraising system has become a model for other conservation organizations around the world and has funded a significant portion of the more than 13.6 million acres of wetlands and associated habitat DU has conserved since 1937.

The 2015 President’s Elite chapters also have the distinction of being honored during DU’s 79th National Convention in Anchorage, Alaska, June 1-5, with many chapter representatives in attendance.

“DU chapters across the country are showing that the future of waterfowl populations and the wetlands that filter our water and protect us from flooding are important to them and to their communities,” Bonderson said. “The more money we raise, the more habitat we can conserve and the closer we are to preserving our waterfowl hunting heritage. I would like to personally thank all our President’s Elite chapters for their achievement and look forward to seeing them among our distinguished chapters next year.”

Q: What should I look for when choosing a funeral home or cemetery? A: The funeral home or cemetery you choose help you design a meaningful memorial that truly celebrates the life it represents. Whether you are in need of immediate assistance or interested in learning more about preplanning options, look for these basic characteristics: • Qualied and caring professionals that

will take the time to listen, address your concerns and work within your budget. Offering various packages allows you to select arrangements at the right price and the best value.

• A funeral home or cemetery with a good reputation within your local and business community and with grounds, roads and buildings that are in good physical condition.

• A full-service provider that can pro-vide a range of funeral and cemetery options. From catering to cremation memorialization, look for a provider that will help you plan every detail of a personal, memorable tribute.

• A funeral home or cemetery that adheres to the law by providing you with a clear, itemized list of prices for merchandise and services offered and chosen.

Q: Do you have any other advice about making final arrangements? A: In my experience, it’s benecial to choose a funeral home or cemetery in advance. Making your arrangements before the time of need helps to ease emotional and nancial stress for your loved ones, and you can have true peace of mind in knowing your nal wishes have been followed. When you plan ahead, your funeral or cemetery provider can help you coordinate every detail of a personal, meaningful tribute. When you’re ready to get started, our funeral home offers a free Personal Planning Guide, a valuable planning tool with helpful information and a place where you can organize and record your nal wishes. Former Taylor HS Football Coach

A former area football coach will return to lead one of San Antonio’s most notable programs. John Campbell was approved as Madison High School football coach and athletic coordinator. Campbell was recently an assistant coach at Texas A&M-Commerce and compiled a 69-19 record in seven seasons at Brandeis before resigning early in 2015. He was also the coach at Jay for three seasons and had a one-year assignment at Taylor High School.

Volleyball players across various Katy high schools are training hard during their club season to garner national recognition. Four Katy athletes, Bailey Allen (Taylor HS), Chloe Simon (Katy HS), Jacqueline Lozier (Taylor HS) and Morgan Bush (Cinco HS) participated recently with their club volleyball team in the Pacific Northwest Qualifier in Spokane, Washington.

The Texas Tornados Mizuno 17 won first place, and they are ranked 87th in United States. They also won a bid to play in the elite Junior National Championship in June, which will take place in Indianapolis, IN. In the meantime, these local athletes are preparing for their next major tournaments in Kansas City, Missouri and Dallas, Texas in April.

University Of Texas Coaches Have High Hopes For Kyle Porter

University of Texas fans haven’t had many positives to talk about for the past few seasons, but at the running back position, one being a recent Katy HS graduate, Kyle Porter, is a tremendous plus for this Texas team. The current group ranks in the top half in the nation as far as depth and talent, and the Longhorns will need to lean on that ability to get the most out of their offense.

The Texas rushing attack will be led by D’Onta Foreman, but freshman, Porter, looks to have a prominent role in the Longhorn progression.

Porter is an all-around back. The Army All-American was prolific in his time at Katy high school. Porter excels at running downhill, using his power and quickness. The Texas staff made Porter a priority throughout last season because they think he can contribute early. Porter is also a weapon in the passing game and can be deployed in a multitude of packages.

Earlier this year coaches Tom McPherson and Kalum Haack were honored at the Hot Stove Banquet in January. McPherson received the Roy Knoblauch Coaching Award; Haack received the Marie “Red” Mahoney Award.

The Tigers were district champions in 2014 and area champions the previous year. Katy finished 20-8 last year with McPherson recording his 700th career coaching victory on March 7 as the Tigers defeated Brazoswood 4-0.

Haack has coached at Katy since 1996 and guided his team to the State Championship last year. Haack has created quite a career coaching softball including stops at Sam Houston State, Nebraska, Kansas, and Alabama. At Alabama, he led the team to its first SEC Championship.

Head football coach, Gary Joseph of the Katy Tigers was named the National Coach of the Year by the National High School Coaches Association. Joseph is 168-14 as Katy’s head coach and hasn’t lost a district game since 2008.

Katy ISD team members include Katie Clark (Katy), Corey Burrough (Katy), Ashley Kriesel (Mayde Creek), Nicole Valdez (Katy), Conner Cape and Bryan Sturges (Seven Lakes.)

District 19-6A girls’ soccer is one of toughest in Houston, if not in Texas. Seven Lakes edged out Cinco Ranch by two points for this year’s district title, and both of their meetings ended in a 1-1 score. A Katy ISD team has won the last four regional Championships, and at least one has played for the title the last seven years. Cinco Ranch beat Seven Lakes the last two years in an all-Katy ISD championship game.

This year the Lady Spartans of Seven Lakes flexed their muscles against Chavez, winning handily 6-0 at Rhodes Stadium. Seven Lakes has never lost in the first round of the playoffs. After winning District 19-6A championship with 10-0-2, the Lady Spartans are after a third straight regional title, and maybe the state title.

Cinco Ranch, the two-time defending regional champions, are back at it after a 9-0-3 record in district play, finishing only two points behind Seven Lakes. Cinco Ranch has a 14 year streak of area championships. The Lady Cougars beat Lamar 5-0 in the first playoff game. Lamar was hoping for a playoff win; the Lady Texans’ last playoff win was in 2010.

The Lady Falcons in their first playoff in history handled Westside 2-0. Tompkins seeded no. 3 received great play this year from JoAnnie Ramos (11 goals, 6 assists), Leanne Veary (7 goals), Kayla Ruopp (7

goals) and Kati Shaposhnikov (5 goals). Keeper Cailey Croson allowed only 26 goals in more than 1,500 minutes.

The Taylor Mustang girls defeated Bellaire 2-0. Previously Bellaire claimed its third consecutive district championship with a 13-1-0 record. The Lady Cardinals ran their district winning streak to 39 games before a 1-0 loss to Westside. Taylor finished fourth in 19-6A, but has shown capable of deep playoff runs. The Lady Mustangs have not lost their opener since 2002 and advanced to state in 2013. This year Ashley Siebert (9 goals, 8 assists) and Ally Brittain (5 goals, 8 assists) lead the offense, while Rachel Gries has a 1.50 GAA in 14 games.

The second playoff games scheduled for either Friday or Saturday, April 1-2, Taylor meets Cypress Ranch who won their first game, 4-0, against MacArthur. Seven Lakes takes on Cypress Creek who defeated Aldine, 2-0. Cinco Ranch Lady Cougars try to keep on winning when they face an old District 19-6A rival, Memorial. Tompkins hopes to make it two in row when they meet Cypress Woods, who had a very impressive first game win, 10-0 over Eisenhower.

Check out the The Katy News website (thekatynews.com) for all the scores of the games coming up.

SOCCER

Boys’ Playoffs Action March 24The Seven Lakes Spartans soccer team

defeated Westside in a shootout after regulation time ran out. The Spartans of Seven Lakes earned their seventh straight postseason berth with a 7-2-5 record and third place in 19-6A. Included was 10 match unbeaten streak.

Cinco Ranch Cougars held off the visiting Lamar Texans, 1-0, scoring in the 72nd minute of the second half. The Cougars (8-2-4) slipped to the No. 2 seed from 19-6A late in the season but entered the playoffs as the defending regional champion with some of the starters returning from last year. The Cougars had the district’s best goal differential. Lamar reached its first postseason since 2011, earning the no. 3 seed from 20-5A.

The Tompkins Falcons come into the playoffs as the fourth seed from District 19-6A, facing off against Houston Math,

Science and Tech at Butler Stadium, winning in a shoot-off. Alex Bruce (23 goals, 13 assists) is one of the area’s top offensive players, with Gustavo Granados adding 12 assists. Jeremy Pacious allowed only 16 goals in 15 matches.

Strake Jesuit is the remaining District 19-6A playoff team, who defeated Reagan 1-0 in the ongoing competition. After missing the playoffs the last two years the Crusaders finished 9-3-2 in district, with a key win, 2-1, against defending champion, Cinco Ranch. Jared Rice and Diego Sordelli scored. Philip Raven kept the Reagan out of the net.

On the weekend of April 1-2 Tompkins takes on Cypress Lakes, Strake faces off against Benjamin Davis, Cinco Ranch against Nimitz, and Seven Lakes tries to continue their playoff run against Jersey Village.
