Architecture+ Design

Bluebottle opened 18 years ago when Frans Burrows set

up his bespoke, personal design studio. Frans and his

multi-disciplinary team work together on all projects

at Bluebottle. These include high-end residential work for

private clients or developers, as well as varied commercial

projects, at home and abroad, across all sectors.

Each project’s success is a result of Bluebottle taking

time to understand the client’s brief. At Bluebottle

there is no house style; we consider each space, from

its unique function to the exquisite detailing that we

pride ourselves in.

The selection of projects within this brochure spans the

18 years of Bluebottle, capturing our wide and varied

client base, and giving a flavour of our assured style and

extensive capability.

NAKED COMMUNICATIONS

London EC2 Project Size: 6,500 sq ft Construction Period: 8 weeks Completed: January 2015

A typical city office environment has been deconstructed to create a striking, monotone interior that reinforces the brand identity of advertising agency Naked.

A long feature desk cuts sharply through the space, dividing black and white, stretching from reception, through the café space, into the main open plan workspace.

Oversized solid oak timber pallets feature in the middle of the open plan floor, providing warmth and texture to the monotone backdrop. These pallets form collaborative workspaces, semi-private meeting spaces and breakout concentration spaces.

PILL BOX, WORKSPACE

London E2 Project Size: 14,000 sq ft Construction Period: 16 weeks Completed: April 2014

The design concept for Pill Box references the building’s former use as a pharmaceutical factory to create a characterful workspace. For example, an untreated mild steel framework housing recylced medicine bottles acts as a space divider. Hexagonal ceramic tiles are inlaid in a timber herringbone floor, referencing the shape of a molecular structure. Bluebottle designed the graphics throughout the building, creating a consistent, vibrant visual language.

PRINCES GATE MEWS

London SW7 Project Size: 1,500 sq ft Construction Period: 42 weeks Completed: September 2000

One of the first projects by Bluebottle, this is a case study in exquisite detailing within a small space that only has windows on the front elevation. A central staircase with a new skylight above acts as a vertical lightwell to maximise the feeling of space.

All primary living areas occupy the front of the house, to benefit from the original windows’ natural light. Secondary spaces – bedrooms and bathrooms – are placed at the rear and enjoy diffused light from the vertical lightwell, as well as funneled daylight from a skylight behind the central stair core.

Bespoke joinery throughout, including a solid walnut vanity unit in the master bedroom, makes this home a timeless classic.

KELSO PLACE

London W8 Project Size: 5500 sq ft Construction Period: 46 weeks Completed: August 2009

A cantilevered staircase of bespoke joinery and frameless glass balustrade forms a link between the three floors. Minimal architectural lighting helps to enhance the simplicity and elegance of the space.

CARGO WORKS WORKSPACE

London SE1 Project Size: 18,500 sq ft Construction Period: 30 weeks Completed: April 2015

A transformation of an old bonded warehouse near the Oxo Tower, for one of our key commercial clients. The scope of works included a new entrance façade to the main reception, leading to a restaurant and meeting rooms. To create the desired open plan environment and maximise space, we altered the internal structure, and extended the space into an existing car park.

The materials palette includes a striking combination of a power-floated concrete and rough cut sawn timber floor, with Carrara marble used for a 12 metre long reception and bar counter. A full-height feature wall formed of vertical slices of solid oak and mirror creates an illusion of depth at the entrance, and reflects the adjacent glazed tile wall.

ARTEMIS

London SW1

Phase I Project Size: 6000 sq ft Construction Period: 14 weeks Completed: January 2007

Phase II Project Size: 11,000 sq ft Construction Period: 16 weeks Completed: April 2014

A two-phase commission for new offices for the leading hedge fund company Artemis.

Wide oak planks, coloured glass and rich timbers for the joinery, sit alongside classic furniture to ensure a timeless, serene design solution. Bluebottle curated the collection of artwork throughout the building.

CANFIELD GARDENS

London NW6 Project Size: 7500 sq ft Construction Period: 56 weeks Completed: January 2011

A refurbishment of a five storey Victorian property that includes a loft conversion, ground floor rear extension and extensive basement enlargement to incorporate a cinema, pool and spa area.

The contemporary and neutral backdrop of the house contrasts with the mix of warm, natural textured materials. An innovative mechanical and electrical solution recycles energy throughout to heat the property.

GETTY IMAGES

London NW1 Project Size: 28,000 sq ft Construction Period: 32 weeks Completed: September 2010

Seattle USA Project Size: 60,000 sq ft Construction Period: 16 weeks Completed: November 2011

A transformation of a tired and outdated office environment into an open plan modern workplace for Getty's London headquarters.

One of the key design features is a 16 metre high suspended light-box, positioned centrally within the main circulation stair. This showcases a selection of around 5000 of Getty's images, and is visible throughout the building.

After the success of the London re-design, Getty invited Bluebottle to design offices for the company’s technology sector in Seattle. The award-winning 60,000 sq ft office space is a stripped back, darkened atmospheric space. A ply ribbon installation weaves through the large open plan areas to create offices, meeting rooms and collaborative workspaces.
