The design of the two envelopes and of the roof is looking to get away from a classic formal vocabulary of architecture, in order to approach the image of a landform. This design provides the building with a certain individuality and monumentality in the urban landscape, as it becomes both a visual signal and a representative element for the town.

The project title reminds of the film Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, directed by Giuseppe Tornatore in 1988. This film tells the story of the childhood of a film director, which takes place during the 50s, in Sicily. Alongside with the story of the director, the film follows the evolution of the movie history by an allegory with the village’s cinema, called Cinema Paradiso and its projectionist, Alfredo.

The site chosen for this project is located near the city center of Beaucaire, next to the canal and the old telegraph building. This location is privileged, thanks to its direct relationship with the city center, the canal and the Road of Romans (Rue de Marronniers). Furthermore, from the point of view of boat circulation, the canal offers good perspectives to the site, which can be regarded as the entrance in the city.

For me cinema is not a s l ice of l i fe, but a piece of cake.

Hitchcock, Albert

The main challenge of the project was to create a hybrid between the cultural dimension of the equipment (art cinema, movie association, exhibition space) and the entertainment dimension (commercial cinemas, bistros).

The function of the cinema is complemented by a coffee shop of about 80 seats, an exhibition space and an underground parking.

The cinematographic experience should be a well-controlled interchange between a deeply social experience, which occurs before and after the film and the solitude in which the viewer is immersed during the film. By his period of loneliness, the viewer plunges into a new world, the world of each film. All through this trip, he loses track of time and finally he finds himself confused or lost at the exit of the theatre. Sometimes, we happen to be surprised when we leave the theater and we realize that it is already dark outside.

The image of the facade, covered with colored pixels, is a reminder to the world of cinema and to the virtual dimension of this type of equipment. In addition, the design of ramp railing follows the pattern of pixels present on the facade.

I also invite you to watch a video presentation of the spectators walk from the public space to the outdoor theater, located on the roof:

During the day, the facade will act as a filter for the outside light and will project colors on the building’s central core due to the sunlight.

During the night, the building becomes a sort of colored lamp, which will make the activities and the interior of the building visible from the outside.

At the level of the global strategy for the town of Beaucaire, this image marks the entry into the town, by the boat canal.

The initial idea of this project was based on the observation of the bipolarity logic of the town of Beaucaire. We imagined a progressive development, which involves in the first place the increase of the influence of these two poles. Subsequently we sought to strengthen the connections between the two poles, and finally we set up a territorial complementarity with the town of Tarascon, located on the other side of the Rhone.

The objective of our functional approach was to complete the functional offer in order to make the two poles independent within the major themes: Culture, Administration, Sport, Commerce and Leisure.

In a second phase, we tried to make the two poles complementary by the diversification of the functions within each of the major themes.

The challenge of this exercise was to transform an old service station, located behind the only facade preserved from the old harbor office of Beaucaire, into a public space. We imagined a sort of urban pocket, shaded and quiet during the hot southern days and bright and vibrant during the animated nights.

The landscape challenge was to make a sequence of different images of the entry into the city by canal boat. We searched for a gradation vegetation/buildings between the railway bridge and the town center.

The photovoltaic panels have three different functions:1. They produce electrical energy that is sent into the EDF network.2. They function as sunshades in order to protect the south facade.3. They preserve the privacy of the terraces.

The ecological corridor - The starting point of our project was the creation of a green corridor, which starts on the hill on northern side of the site and continue to the south, crossing the D2 road. This corridor has been established by the preservation and the increase of existing orchards, along with the conservation of the agricultural character of the area.

This project is based on a concrete scenario of rehabilitation of a primary school built in the ‘70s, in the town of Issoire. To facilitate the implementation of such a project and to reduce costs, I imagined a two-stage development:

1. In the first step, the patio is closed, by construction of the administrative part. Furthermore, the classroom and the common areas are redesigned.

2. The second step consists of the relocation of a class in order to allow the construction of a sports hall, which is now reviewed as an essential element in the functioning of schools. This hall is made of prefabricated wooden panels to ensure a fast and economical construction.

at Grands Ateliers de l’Isle d’Abeau.

You can find more information about this experience by following this link:

The objective of this week, which we spent at Grandes Ateliers, was to build a stretched textile structure that we designed previously, in Clermont-Ferrand. This structure was intended to function as a sheltered relaxation area projected for the development of public spaces.

Hospital gardens

The lack of gardens and green spaces nearby the today’s urban hospitals is a situation created by a set of factors that have a very pragmatic basis: the price of real estate, rationalization of the budgets, the parking needs, the evolution of medical ideas, the state-of-art technology, etc...

In this context, the questions that arise are: The garden, does it still has a significant role for a modern hospital? What does it bring to the lives of patients and staff? What does it bring to the surrounding city?

Throughout this dissertation, I tried to find possible answers to these questions by analyzing a set of historical and modern hospitals. In addition, the study includes a case study on the new CHU Estaing, Clermont-Ferrand. This hospital is a very interesting case because of its novelty and because of the commitment of its architects to design a fairly original hospital, which tries to meet the needs of today’s society. The study also contains the exchanges I made with several hospital architects on the subject of hospital gardens (Michael Pukszta, Antoine Buisseret, Brigit Kosmi, Rémy Butler, Ronan Desormeaux and Arnold Burger).

Deriving from the “multiple-unit” typology, this type of hospital is characterized by a new organization, along an internal street that connects the different medical poles. This street is usually semi-public and provides users with a clear and inviting space to which all medical services open. The street is often vegetated, and becomes a traversing hospital’s garden.

This urban restructuring project is justified by the future relocation of the old Ursus brewery and the willingness of the city to increase the housing density in the pericentral area (2010). The three main objectives of our intervention were:

- To extend the Uzinei Electrice Street in order to improve traffic conditions in the city.- To maintain the memory of the old beer factory by the conservation of the old buildings and the establishment of a museum of beer.- To find the right housing and functional diversity.

The attraction of the ruin Re h a b i l i ta t i o n of t h e Pa l a c e of C u l t u re i n B l a j , R o m a n i a

Project completed in a team with Florin GAVRILAS and Adrian NECHITA for Blaj Palace of Culture rehabilitation competition, Romania in June-July 2011.

The present situation of the building (with well-rehabilitated facades and with the interior destroyed by a fire) inspired us an intervention based on contrasts: we kept almost intact the facades and we rebuilt the interior within a contemporary way using new materials and technologies.

The main challenge was to permit the organization of very different events in the great hall. We made this possible by the use of a mobile stage and a retractable roof. The desire to fully open the great hall has its origins in the amazing atmosphere we found during our visits. (The old roof was completely burned during the fire).

In contrast to the daytime sobriety of the facades, we have imagined, for the evening’s time, a permanent system of mapped projections on the facades. This type of system offers plenty of creative possibilities in order to animate the building: projections of the events’ schedule, advertisements for the cultural events of the city, tourist information, short films, etc ... Moreover, with the help of a graphic tablet, local graffers can make virtual graffiti, live, on the facade.
