BACKGROUND - The population of the New Orleans area fluctuates dramatically in reaction to both catastrophic and dionysian events. Mardi Gras Indians (a) claim the site during the festival season, and the relative poverty of the area makes it especially suseptible to the devastion of hurricanes. Urban living spaces must be designed to aggregate and service these oc-curent influxes.

OBSERVATION - minimal privacy during the day and a lack of presence at night. An overall feeling of vacancy despite strong pedestrian and vehicular move-ment. Graphically represtend in (b)

DEVELOPMENT - At the indi-vidual scale, a sleeping space (c) was developed that could offer light and privacy to the occupant, while an indicator of activity to the communtiy. This move com-bats the sense of vacancy during the nightlife of the site. Moving to the aggregate scale, the form of a wave serves the dual purposes of increasing privacy between spaces and activating the site (d). This form was further refined into the final model.

RESULTS - An active space that explores privacy and safety issues at scales ranging from indidual to large aggregation.

NOTE - The project refrained from the discussion of poverty and shelter for the homeless because the subject deserved a more in-depth study than time allowed.

BACKGROUND - Revitalization of the Warehouse Distict in New Orleans is bringing modern design to the industrial area adjacent to downtown. As upscale restaurants and penthouses are introduced, commercial development becomes more necessary. This project included requirements for com-mercial space and two apartment residences.

OBSERVATION - a long, narrow, site with two street faces between two warehouses. Both facing streets feature industrial buildings, while recent develop-ments on S. Diamond and Andrew Higgins are primarily private resi-dential and commercial, respec-tively.

DEVELOPMENT - Site analysis included a study of the openings featured in the area (A). The narrow site favored an indoor shooting range as the commercial program. The project became an exploration of frames and framing. (Development continued next page)

DEVELOPMENT - Shooting ranges feature sound baffles (appearent below), and this fea-ture was reinterpreted as a fram-ing feature for sight and light, especially in the facade. An eleva-tion study of the block (B) was undtaken and considered with the concept to design the baffled faces.

RESULTS - an infill multi-use building and exploration framing with a unique program connection to concept.

SOUTH RENDON, GERT TOWN DISTRICT, NEW ORLEANS

Page 16: Architecture Portfolio

3

BACKGROUND - The Old City Building Center (OCBC) disman-tles buildings that would other-wise be demolished and repurposes the materials for new construction. The new warehouse design expets an expanded program including classrooms and offices. The site in Gert Town exists at the heart of New Orleans transportation where Jefferson Davis meets I-10.

DEVELOPMENT - The site observation drawing of the site shows glowing glass panels inset into brick (A). A concpet of carv-ing to reveal a special material (glass with reflective foil in this case) considers the exceptional quality of the recycled construc-tion materials that are revitalized. Structural design added rythm to the organization of program.

RESULTS - A structurally ef-ficient warehouse with sectional clarity, enivironmental fetures, and exploration of material ap-plications.
