The historical value of Sanjo dori-street Sanjo dori-street was made as the Big Three Street in the Heian period(A.D. 794~1192), and many inn and commerce and industry located along this street which prospered as the terminal of Toukaido-street. Sanjo dori-street has been always commercial and cultural center and geographical standard in ancient city Kyoto. There are many vestiges of the prosperity in the old townscape and architecture and a historic site. The street runs east and west and connects eastern kawaramachi dori-street and western karasuma dori-street. Sanjo dori-street is lively with many shoppers and sightseers, and entertained people unlike another mainstreet Shijou dori-street.

Exhibiting the Sanjo dori-street itselfThe site is opposite to the Chukyo post office (an important cultural property) along Sanjo dori-street. I liken the street to a exhibition and provide the space where vis i tors can look out on the street. And fur thermore, v is i tors who go a long the s t reet expe r i ence and v i ew the p resen t t he San jo dori-street.After that, they enter the museum and appreciate the exhibition. Through the experience, the visitors can liken the street to a exhibition and even compare the street to a part of museum. I design exhibition room to be parallel with the street in order to be the series of history exhibition.

Textile of History I design layout of the exhibition which is not through only one time axis but also various axis. World and japanese history ought to be involved in history of Sanjo dori-street. Historical axis of world and japan(the warp) are inserted in historical axis of Sanjo dori-street(the welt) as the exhibition composition. Consequently visitors view the welt of history while bringing into connection the warp of history and have a deep understanding of the history. Architecture foam is like textile made of the welt and warp as a motif. Two plain intersect at right angle grid planes are superimposed. Exhibition room and audio visual archives and reading room and cafe are arranged in between two textiles. Architectural composition make the zigzag route. Every corner make the division of history (the ancient times and the middle ages and modern times and present age) and visitors view in regular order.

The phantom Go-Shin railway

Yoshino has been one of the eminent place of Japanese cedar for a long time. Yoshino cedar is one of the three major precious wood. Timber had been sent by raft. But increase in production reached the limits and stabilization of the transportation was hoped. Then there was the plan afoot to construct the railway from Go-jo to Shin-gu 100 years ago. The source of railway's name Go-Shin is both ends city name of railway. Construction began in 1959, and some tunnels was completed but once construction was interrupted because WWⅡ broke up. After the war construction was resumed. Railway company and local government interests were inextricably interwoven. The Go-Shin railway project was stopped. In present there are many constructions as industrial infrastructure for example a viaduct and a bridge pier and tunnels in Go-jo city. They are in state of neglect. Go-shin railway project was magnificent plan and I get carried away by nostalgia for each constructions.

Site information and proposal and intention The site is the viaduct which is the most impressive construction in Go-shin railway and the area around that. I propose conversion and renovation the viaduct and build the market, the house, the assembly hall and park. The viaduct is 220 meters long and describe the arc with a radius of 1560m. And the viaduct repeat Roman arches. There is the possibility of usefulness that the length and the shape. The possibility of usefulness is utilized to conversion and renovation. I think about anew and inquiry into the nature of architecture through the proposal I intend to bring out the possibility of usefulness of the viaduct and to design the architecture which respond to surroundings. This project is my merkmal in design architecture.

Plan by tabula rasa imply forsake the possibility of usefulness and the workability of the form.

The form exist apart from the function.

The form is the very thing that affect history. Because, meaning of the form is forgotten and change and vanish.

Only just the form is inherited. The city don't exist as accumulation of the meaning and the function but just as accumulation of the form.

It is not the nature of architecture to creation land and to built newly. I see the meaningless viaduct as a artificial ground. And to modify and customize and edit is just the architecture that I think. The following is what I give weight to.

1. transforming the familiar sight of the viaduct to town dwellers by various operation

2. extraction of the possibility of usefulness from things the viaduct

3. extraction of redundancy and diversity from the viaduct and create new situation through the edit them

The viaduct as the stage of one's life.

The stage create the some scene that is new situation and direct the life.

Creation of new form and conversion of existing form.

“New architecture shouldn't be moving form but should be new situation as property.”

Architecture and scenery and environment that is the situation work upon individual emotional action.

I want to create the atmosphere of a room and a passage and a street, situation link to people who are in the architecture.

Create an ecosystem There are small gaps among cubes to l ive in there for aquatic l ife. Furthermore, the cube and the tide create a new ecosystem and it is a teaching materials for child as a biotope.

Gradually change of the space by the tide There is a big change of the space when the tide up and the land is covered by water. There are changes of not only the sight but behavior and activity.

The vestige of canal in the site. This space used to be a landing place for the customs. In present the customs has moved and the site has been dead space. I propose elementary school that topography and architecture coalesce into one.

The deregulation of harbor area In former times there was a harbor in Ajigawa-river. There was a great come and go of shipping. The harbor used to be a busy one, as the port transport industry. But, harbor facilities in inner bay area is declining by development of land reclamation in Osaka bay. In present the function of both water transportation base and production base fulfilled its duty as a support of Osaka's development. Thus deregulation of harbor area is expected around the site. This deregulation bring possibility of new developments which is large construction of condominiums and increase in population are expected in this area.

Alienated life from the waterside The site is in the south bank of Ajigawa-river in Nishi ward in Osaka city. In the Edo period, many canals circulated around Osaka. Osaka used to be a flourishing water transportation region, and people lived with river and canals. People who lived in osaka worked and enjoy the evening cool in the waterside. It was a playground for children. The waterside is a support for Osaka to live and the cradle of its culture. So, Osaka was named “the city on water” like Venice. But, in present waterside is kept away from, because there is flood damage and changeover from water transportation to land transportation. The relationship between people and waterside is insubstantial.

Site Plan (S=1/5000)

Form different from reclamation People had filled in and forgotten many canal and river used to be everywhere in Osaka. This propose isn't reclamation but floating island. I leave the margin for river in order to preserve the memory of river. This form make the boundary between city and river to be unclear.

Cube and Various difference of altitude I arrange cubes which have various hight in the whole site and design various place like a hill and a valley. I borrow motifs from a rocky tract for composition of Cube's arrangements. Various space appear minute by minute.

There used to be a canal in Ajigawa-river. Peculiar topography had been made the best use of, but it is difficult to say that the whole site is used efficaciously at present.

Many other canals used to be in the area around the site. But, most of canals is filled in.

Site information and Proposal The site is place where left the vestige of canal. It is caused by partial reclamation. The vestige's shape is like a cove. There was the customs which make good use of its shape but the site is abandoned now. On the other hand the deregulation of harbor area bring new developments in the near future. Then I propose a elementary school which introduce people to waterside. The elementary school is available to people and function as a community space like a piazza. I utilize the change of the water level by the tide in order to be the interface between waterside and people.

TIMBERIZE In the past architecture had been made mainly of timber in Japan. But,

it had been restricted in urban areas, because it is flammable. On the other hand, current urban space consists of many building which made of concrete and steel and plastic. These materials have been used since modern ages, and these are the most popular in urban architecture. But, in 2000 revision of the Japanese Building Standards Law has made possible bu i ld a f i reproo f a rch i tec tu re . In add i t ion , f i re - res is tan t and earthquake-resistant timber has been developed by state-of-the-art technology. Timber is attracting architect's attention as material which take the place of concrete and steel. In such circumstances, TIMBERIZE Exhibition has been held in Tokyo. TIMBERIZE is a suggestion wooden building stand together in large numbers in urban space where there are many buildings made of concrete and steel. I propose huge wooden building stands in Omotesando, Tokyo.

Site Information and Proposal Chosen site is the intersection of Omotesando street and Aoyama dori-street.

There are a Buddhist temple and burial ground, a shrine, ONE Omotesando designed by Kengo Kuma, many commercial building in around the site. I propose “the stacking wall with aperture” which is created by alternately stacking timber and like an folding screen. This wall make a free plan and the new exhibition system possible.
