The EWDC is different from other uni-versity architecture programs. Instead of sitting in a classroom, students gain first hand experience by designing and constructing buildings in rural Mxi-co, these buildings are the result of collaborating with the community directly. Students in the rural studio actually live in the same community they are working with, understanding the context first hand. The mission of the rural studio is to enable each participating student to cross the threshold of misconceived opinions by putting their educational values to work as citizens of a community. Their belief is that architecture should be created from within, not from outside. Located in a small town 40 minutes from the city of Oaxaca this project was requested by a nonprofit organization, The women of the valley of Etla, an organization that helps women in need, they had a small lot in the community center where they required massage therapy and change rooms for the temazcal (a type of sweat lodge from pre-Hispanic origin). Two opposites volumes that converge in the temazcal to provide protection and privacy to users.

The state government is in the process of decentralizing arts programs by establishing re-gional centers for the arts. In this context, the city council of Salinas de Hidalgo requested the Faculty of Architecture to develop a master plan for the de-velopment of their center for the arts, located in an old saltworks estate from the 18th century that had only been used as location for filming Hollywood movies. The main idea of the project is to retain the existing structures as much as possible. The main house is a site museum, the open spaces of the stables are converted to gallery, and the high ceil-ings in the storage area are transformed into the classrooms spaces for arts and crafts. Secondly faades are restored to their original state. Beside the new theatre and the residence for the students there are no new buildings, using all the existing infrastructure so as not to change drastically the view and landscape of the place.

In the southeast border of the UNAM campus, between the reserve and the Santo Do-mingo suburb there is a residual space that is no longer in use which the school was looking to de-velop.

The plot is on the corner of Delfn Mad-rigal & Av del Iman. The strategy is to create resi-dencial zones, which are presently absent on the campus, in the master plan of the UNAM. The official plan includes 10 buildingss for international students. This project tries to complete the original plan, mixing the tipology developed for the original campus, a UN world Heritage site, with new archi-tectural approaches focused becoming a leading example of sustainable design.

This zone of Mexico City is currently lacking social, cultural and sports amenities. The area is very well connected, but has no urban cen-ter to complement the basic services.

The proposal plans to create a ground level layer for the commercial activity of the zone, programmed for a bakery, a health center, restau-rants, a day care, a drug store, and a convenience store. The concept is to create a park in the middle of the project, providing a hub of activity in an area lacking public spaces.

project data: typology: housing area of site: 466m2

program: 5 houses population: 14 people parking: 13 cars structural system: concrete structure

This project combines continuous indoor/outdoor spaces with a magnificent view of one of the main parks of this crowded city. The initial approach for Perugino was to divide the land into parcels pro-ducing five single-family residences that maximize the linear, enclosed, narrow space. The main goal was to maintain an interior-exterior connection. This was achieved by dividing the main building structure into two separate volumes connected through glass bridges, generating a private open deck in the center that allows the entry of natu-ral light. The three story houses were thoughtfully planned to provide its buyers with everything they need. Private parking space and a fully equipped room that can be used as an office are located on the ground floor, separated from the main house. The first floor has two bedrooms separated by a deck for privacy. The second floor allocates the dinning and living room with a balcony that extends into the park. This area is connected to the kitchen through a glass bridge and to the roof garden situ-ated on the third floor. The houses are designed to fill the needs of a contemporary eco-friendly market by providing a complex rain-capturing and sun-heating water system. The materials used for building were mainly concrete for the core struc-ture and balau wood for the facades.

  • SUD 777 RESTAURANT JARDINES DEL PEDREGAL, LVARO OBREGN, MXICO CITY>NIZ+CHAUVET

project data: typology: restaurant area of site: 867m2

program: store 3 bars terrace kitchen pastry terrace population: 262 diners parking: 35 cars structural system: concrete walls steel frames

Located in the south of Mxico City, two blocks away from the Anillo Periferico. The restaurant is named after the address in which is located. The project has a capacity for 262 din-ers and serves International & Japanese cuisine. The owners wanted the restaurant to become Pedregal living room, an urban oasis where law-makers and other diners can go and unwind after a long days work. With the principles of Rustic Luxury in mind, we designed a dining space that celebrates the essential beauty and goodness con-tained in simple things, a principle that is similarly reflected in Suds menu, which promotes local growers, seasonal ingredients and pure, simple dishes. Rustic Luxury synchronizes simplicity and complexity, the traditional and the contemporary, to define an elegant, relaxed lifestyle and the pleasure and sensuality of real materials.

project data: typology: housing area of site: 13630m2

program: 8 bedrooms recording studio pool population: 14 people parking: 6 cars structural system: concrete structure

Casa Punta Oro is the first residence built in one of the areas not yet occupied at the Isla de Navidad, located 15kilometers south of Puerto Manzanillo, Mxico. Challenging the stillness of the sur-roundings, Casa Punta Oro materializes the dreams of the owner of a floating volume which embod-ies the spaces for holidays. The volume is sup-ported by circular columns placed by a grid. The columns are accompanied by sliding glass panels that define the common area of the house; the liv-ing-dining and terrace are integrated or separated by the option to open or close the glass panels depending on social and weather conditions. The rest of the house guest rooms, kitchen and services are tastefully secluded at the back of the sloped site thus providing visual contrast with a volume of water in the front which has been unearthed for the enjoyment of swim-ming. Each view in the house connects to the infi-nite of the horizon.

The area called Polanco is one of the most privileged places of Mxico City, where veg-etation hides houses, therefore a restaurant/bar in this location should be something like eating in a park. The owners wanted a Mexican experience, mixed with Art Deco architecture. The project aims to remove the barriers between inside and outside by means of a vegetation box used as a garden enclosure that surrounds us. Thus interior, terrace and pedestrian street create a single space, being closed to the noise and opened for the garden. What exists is left to its own scale of facilities, all painted in plain black with the key furniture with elements painted in gold or onyx , to introduce materials at the scale of people. La 20 has infused a modern twist on the cantina while evoking its spirit.

The house consists of two volumes, a stone block and shed volume, the first floor is completely used for the public area, the cellar and the service area are in the basement, and the bedrooms are on the upper floor. The structural grid is in modules of 4.6 x 2.85m. The house uses screens to take ad-vantage of breezes from the mountains while also framing views out to nearby Lake Avndaro In the winter months, a large fireplace keeps the house warm enough to use year-round. Despite its generous size, the typology of the flat is very long and narrow which makes the current layout very inefficient with regard to cor-ridors and effective living spaces. A clear reorgani-zation of the internal partitions and bathroom lay-outs enables us to develop a new specific concept not only for the space and the materials, but also for the display of the client art collection, a frame to look out at the mountains in the daytime, the apartment becomes a glowing space to look into at night time. Increasing the perception of gener-ous space was the prime goal pursued in order to provide a new living experience within. The idea was to blur the limits of the rooms to maximize the impression, the continuity and the fluidity of space
