30 August 2017 Dear BA Architecture and Architectural Technology and the Environment Direct Entry Stage 5 Students. We look forward to you joining us at Plymouth University. We hope that you are well and enjoying your summer, whether playing, reading or working. We are all looking forward to your return and the start of the new academic year. There is much to be excited about in the coming year, all geared towards supporting you as students to both aim and achieve at an ever more ambitious level, and to help take the program further forward. This enthusiasm for the coming year is underpinned by what were some notably achievements in the previous academic year. One aspect of this is the substantial increase in the satisfaction rating in the National Student Survey given to the program by our recently graduates, in comparison to the previous year. Concurrently, we received some very positive feedback from our external examiners, who noted in particular: The very positive energy and atmosphere in the school, evidenced by both the students' enthusiasm for the ethos and ambitions of the program, and a strong sense of staff commitment. The depth and quality of the work produced. The evolution of the ‘live’ project and the impact that is having of the attitude of the school. The engagement in applied research present in non-studio modules and emerging in the Design Studio. So celebrating our achievements and wish the following well in their submission for national awards: Tatiana Muringani RIBA Dissertation Submission Matthew Fox RIBA Bronze Medal Design Submission Tatiana Muringani RIBA Bronze Medal Design Submission They have all been working over the summer to complete the work for these submissions and we wish all of them the very best with these prestigious submissions. We would also like to congratulate the ATE students from yr 2who are now on summer placements, well done! We hope you enjoy your time in practice this year, please stay in touch and if you can make it come back from time to time to see what is going on. The structure of BA 2 + 3 studios will be similar to that of last year with Semester 1 operating as Horizontal Years systems in studio and Semester 2 operating as Vertical Design Studios.
Information for EU / international students We are very pleased to welcome you to Plymouth and the United Kingdom as the place that you have chose to pursue your studies in architecture. We recognise that study in the UK may be different from the nature of study you may have experienced in your home country. For this reason all students from outside the UK are invited – and encouraged – to participate in the English Support for University programme. This programme is offered only to students studying architecture. The course will run during semester 1 & semester 2. The aim of this course is to settle students into their studies and give them a head start on some of the administrative issues, show what is available to support their studies, and help students to understand what will be expected of them throughout the academic year. This includes: § Academic writing, including: types of writing, referencing and academic vocabulary. § Listening, including coping with lectures and tutorials. § Speaking, including participating in discussions and giving oral presentations. § Reading, including on the purpose of reading, effective reading and selective reading. Further to above, the International Student Advisory Service (ISAS) as part of university supporting service provides specialist support and guidance for Plymouth University EU & international students, enabling you to fulfill your academic potential and to get the most out of your time in the UK. The ISAS is located in the ground floor of the North-west corner of the Roland Levinsky Building. They also offer comprehensive immigration advice for students, including assistance with extending your visa, information for visas to travel throughout Europe and visitor visas for your friends and family to visit you in the UK. They also operate an orientation programme for all new to Plymouth EU/International Students in September, and will email you in the summer with details of this programme and our Heathrow Meet and Greet service. Please find any further assistance for international students on the following website. Information for International Students Have a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing you, refreshed and eager on Monday 19th September. We are looking forward very much to the coming year, and the opportunity to work with you on what will be some exciting projects.
