LeimholzstUtzen ruhen. Beidsei tige Dach-
auskragungen von 4 Metern Tiefe schutzen
die Fassaden vor Witterungseinflussen und
verringern die statische Hbhe der Sekundar-
konstruktion. Die gesamte Tragkonstruktion
wurde vorgefertigt und konnte an einem Tag
errichtet werden.
Die l.anqstassade ist mit Trapezblechen in
Horizontalrichtung bekleidet. Der mit tlere
Fassadenbereich ist anders profiliert als
Sockel und Attika. So erscheint die Fassade
niedriger und abwechslungsreicher. An den
Stirnseiten sind Tei lbereiche groBf lachig ver-
glast; Innen- und AuBenraum gehen hier
barrierefrei ineinander uber.
Erected next to an existing sports ciub, the
hall has a length of 33m and a ciear height of
5m. It is divided into two playing areas by a
three-metre-wide central strip crowned by a
polycarbonate-slab skylight. The laminated
timber roof structure consists of a main beam
supported by two trest le- like elements within
the central strip. Secondary beams extend in
the longitudinal direction from the main beam
to slender timber columns at the two ends of
the hall. The entire prefabricated load-bearing
structure was erected in a single day. The
long faces of the hall are ciad in horizontal ly
ribbed metal sheeting. Large areas of glazingto the end faces create a flowing transition
between indoors and outdoors.

Der zentrale Omnibusbahnhof ist eine von
drei MaBnahmen im stadtebaulichen Ge-
samtkonzept zur Aufwertung des Bahnhofs-umfeldes in Emsdetten. Fur die nordlich
von Munster gelegene Gemeinde mit rund
35000 Einwohnern wird eine Frequentierung
von bis zu 3000 Passagieren pro Tag er-
wartet. Dies verlangt sowohl eine hohe
Widerstandsfahigkeit als auch eine klare
und sichere Strukturierung der Bewegungs-
tlachon.
Die 56 Meter lange Fahrgastinsel im Zen-
trum des Platzes bundslt aile Buslinien und
ist komplett einsehbar. An der Ost- und
Sudseite des Bahnhofes sind Stsllplatze
tur PKWs, Taxis und Fahrrader geplant.
L
Stahlkonstruktion.
Die Tragstruktur besteht aus einer Reihung
von X-StUtzen und symmetrisch zur l.anqs-
achse angeordneten Paaren aus geboge-
nen Rundrohren als Haupttraqer. Zwischen
diesen hanqt eine Lage Nsbentraqer,
ebenfalls aus Rundrohrprofilen. Die Uber-
dachung der Omnibusstation erfolgt inner-
halb der boqsntorrnlqen Haupttraqer uber
farbige VSG-Platten, die als punktgehaltene,
geschuppte Uberkopfverglasungen mit
Klemmhaltern von den Nebentragern
abqshanqt sind. Fur Regenschutz zwischen
den einzelnen Bogen sorgen opake und
hochqlanzends, glasfaserverstarkte Hohl-korper aus Polyester. Diese sind aus einer
Ober- und einer Unterschale zusammen-
gesetzt und werden mit einem integrierten
Stegsystem zu freitragenden, »rnonolithi-
scherr- Elementen.
Aile Teile der Uberdachung wurden indus-
triell vorgefertigt und in Modulbauweise
vor Ort montiert. Diese l.osunq srrnoqllcht
einerseits serielle Produktion und hohe
Flexibilitat fur eventuelle Nach- oder Um-
rustunqsn. Andererseits kerman sarntliche
Module einzeln und wartungsfreundlich
ausgetauscht werden.

DETAIL 2002 D 12 Omnibusbahnhof in Emsdetten 4
Forming part of a general upgrading of the
station district, the present facilities were de-
signed to cope with up to 3,000 passengers a
day. A robust construction and a clear, safestructuring of the various traffic areas and
movements were required. All bus routes are
grouped around a 56-metre-long island, to
which there is access from the nearby parking
areas for cars, taxis and cycles.
A special lightweight roof structure was devel-
oped, consisting of slender steel tubes, with
glass and fibre-reinforced plastic coverings
that ensure bright l ighting conditions under-
neath. The construction is bome by a row of
X-shaped tubular members. These support
pairs of roof elements - in the form of sine
curves with tubular primary beams - that rise
at an angle of 20° on both sides of a centralvalley. Structurally, the roof elements function
as suspended arches stabil ized by secondary
beams. There are two types of coverings:
point-fixed lapped panes of coloured lami-
nated safety glass; and special ly developed
opaque, high-gloss synthetic elements. Man-
ufactured as larger, s ingle units, the lat ter
consist of two-layer, hollow, fibre-reinforced-
polyester sheets with intermediate reinforcing
r ibs. The bus stat ion roof was prefabr icated
and assembled on site as a unit construction
system. This al lows a high degree of flexibility,
should extensions or modifications be re-
quired. It also facilitates the replacement of

This three-storey house is set on a narrow site
3 m wide and 20 m long. Since the occupants
go out for many domestic activities, it was
possible to create a layout without traditionalspatial divisions. The brief required a bright in-

ture consists of two parallel reinforced concrete
walls with round concrete struts between them
and a membrane roof spanned over the top.
The identical but reversed curves of the walls
result in a multiply curved roof form, which intum determined the position of the cylindrical
struts. The fibre-glass membrane affords good

Auf dem uneinheitl ich bebauten Gelande ei-
nes holzverarbeitenden Unternehmens ent-
Kranbahnen. Seine ldentitat erhalt das Ge-
baude durch die schlichte Raffinesse der
Gestaltung. Mit einfachen Mitteln gelingt ein
nobles Bauwerk.
1mAchsabstand von 6 m sind BSH-StUtzen in
Form von Vierendeeltragern angeordnet. Ihre
verhaltnismablq groBe Breite und die Ein-
spannung beider Gurte uber Stahlbleche im
Fundament optimieren die Queraussteifung.
Der h6here Gurt der AuBenstUtzen traqt die
Dachkonstruktion, der niedrigere Innengurt
die Kranbahnschiene. Zwischen den Gurten
der InnenstUtzen - auch hier tragen sie die
Kranbahn - ist ein Laufsteg integriert. Sie
nehmen die Dachlasten ubsr einen Fach-
werkbinder auf. Schlanke, im Abstand von
zwei Metern lamellenf6rmig angeordnete
BSH-Binder sind die einzige Traqerlaqs fur
die 40 mm starke Dachschalung. Stahlkreuze
in den l.anqstassaden, Dreischichtplatten als
Dachschalung in Teilbereichen, die l.anqs-
traqer sowie auch die Kranbahnschienen
ubernahrnen die Langsaussteifung.

The hall has a rectangular two-bay layout and
is 43 x 76m on plan. The simple cubic volume
is over 10m high and accommodates two par-
allel gantries. The laminated timber columns at
6-metre centres are constructed in the form of
Vierendeel trusses. Their relatively great depth
and the rigid fixing of both chords in the foun-
dations ensure optimum cross-bracing.
The taller chord of the outer columns supports
the roof construction, the lower inner chord
bears a gantry rail. The roof loads are trans-
mitted to the intemal columns via a trussed
girder. Between the chords of these columns
is an access walkway. The roof construction is
supported by a series of slender laminated
roof trusses at two-metre centres. Longitudinal
bracing is provided by steel crosses in the

Diese Tragkonstruktion ist mit einer Haut
aus transparenten Polycarbonat-Doppelsteg-
platten umschlossen.
nehm weiche Helligkeit. Die senkrecht ange-
ordneten, qsbauoehohen Platten - durch Nut
und Feder miteinander verbunden - sind am
FuBpunkt fest eingespannt, oben lose ge-
fasst, um thermische l.anqenanderunqen zu

Platten mit Metallprofilen an schmale, mit
Stahlstabsn abqshanqte Fassadenriegel ge-

rechte Schiebekonstruktion. Uber die Tore,
Notausqanqs und Rauchabzugs6ffnungen

long facades, by laminated sheeting in certain
areas of the roof, and by the longitudinal beams
and gantry rails. The structure is enclosed by
a skin of transparent polycarbonate hollow
cellular slabs rigidly fixed at the base, but flexi-
bly restrained at the top to allow for thermal
movement. The facade changes appearance,
depending on the angle of view, the weather
and the lighting conditions. Since a series of
gates were required next to each other, a
vert ical sl iding movement was chosen.
Together with the emergency exits and smoke
extract openings in the roof, these gateways
also serve to ventilate the hall. The great
thermal storage capacity of the smooth steel-
fibre-concrete elements helps to prevent over-
heating in summer.

In Meguro, einer dicht bebauten Wohnge-
gend Tokios, liegt dieses Haus fur einen
Fotografen.
stoffen unterschiedl icher Ouall tat , Haptik
und Transluzenz zu experimentieren, sowie
neue Detail16sungen fur dieses Material zu
entwickeln.
Die zu StraBe und Garten orientierten Fassa-
den sind innen wie auBen mit klarlackierten
Paneelen aus faserverstarktern Kunststof f
verkleidet. Dazwischen befindet sich eine
Schicht transluzenter Warmedammung. So
bleibt den Schlafzimmern der Bezug nach
drauBen, ohne die Privatsphare preiszuge-
ben. Diverse Details, von Lamellen als Zaun
und Sichtschutz uber Treppenstufen bis zu
Schraubverbindungen, sind in Kunststoff
ausgefUhrt. Aus pragmatischen Uberlegun-
gen besteht die Tragstruktur jedoch aus
Stahlprofilen - die Ausstrahlung des Gsbau-
des war beim "plastic house- wichtiger als
der konsequente Einsatz nur eines Materials.

The house was designed for a photographer
and is located in a densely built residential
area. Its form was largely determined by stat-
utory requirements and building lines. Based
on a concept of openness, the house is dis-
tinguished by large areas of glazing on the
ground floor. The photo studio is situated in
the basement. The flat roof, which affords a
view over the city, is also used as an open-air
studio and for parties, as well as for tea cere-
monies, which are held on the rear terrace
area for friends of the client.
Plastic was chosen as the appropriate materi-
al for this building in order to achieve the re-
quired qualities of lightness and openness. It
was also seen as a fitting response to the
chaot ic urban surroundings. The architect
was further attracted by the opportunity of ex-
perimenting with different Idnds of plastic and
developing new details for this material. The
walls facing on to the street and the garden
are f inished intemal ly and external ly with f ibre-
reinforced plastic panels, with an intermediate
layer of translucent thermal insulation. In this
way, the bedrooms enjoy a link with the out-
side world without any loss of privacy. S imilar-
ly, the plastic strips to the garden fence, the
veranda and balcony provide both screening
and openness. Many other details, from the
staircase treads to certain fixings, were also
executed in plastic. For pragmatic reasons,
however, the load-bearing structure is in steel.

entwickel ten Edelstahl-Klemmleisten befes-
tigt. Sie verbinden konstruktiv die Vorteile
von linearer Befestigung und Randseil. Der
so entstehende geschwungene, girlanden-
fbrmige Abschluss unterstUtzt zudem die
schwebende Wirkung des Daches.

DETAIL 2002 D 12 Informationszentrum in Kochel am See 2
Erected in 1924 as one ofthe first storage
power stations in Bavaria, the plant exploits
the 200-metre difference in height betweenthe two lakes, Walchensee and Kochelsee, to
generate electr ici ty . A new information centre
has been constructed for the up to 100,000
visitors who come here every year. To inte-
grate the centre into the existing context, the
structure was built into the slope of the site,
with planted flat roofs that merge with the sur-
roundings. All that is visible is a curved trans-
parent roof that seems to hover above the
ground. This l ightweight tr iangular membrane
structure is drawn over the forecourt to the
exhibi tion and restaurant facili ties, which are
housed in two flanking tracts. The V-shaped

entrance courtyard opens on the third side to
the existing buildings.
The roof consists of a single-layer ETFE mem-brane, through which visitors have a view of
the mountains. With an area of 390 m2, the
membrane weighs only 180 kg. The light-
weight form of construction was, however,
designed to bear great snow loads (up to
165 kg/m2). The load-bearing structure con-
sists of a series of prefabricated laminated-
timber compression arches with a maximum
span of 27m. The compression loads from
the arches are transmitted to the solid con-
crete slabs over the flanking buildings and
from there to the ground. The membrane is
stretched over a secondary structure of alu-

minium tubes laid over the timber arch mem-
bers at 1.25 m centres. S ince the roof covers
an open courtyard space, it must also be ca-pable of resisting strong suction forces. In-
stead of securing the membrane from the top
with screws or bolts, which could damage the
watertight seal, it was fixed by welding plastic
strips to the underside and clamping these
into the secondary tubular sections. The
membrane was tensioned from the middle to
the edges and fixed in specially developed
stainless-steel c lamping strips. These com-
bine the structural advantages of linear fixing
and peripheral cables. The festoon-shaped
edge of the membrane thus created height-
ens the light, floating effect of the roof.

In this new building, which seeks to evoke the
spatial atmosphere of classical l ibraries, the
shelving forms part of the load-bearing struc-
ture. The closed side walls, the intermediate
f loor and the roof consist of prefabr icated t im-
ber box elements. The sides of the shelving, in
laminated timber sheeting, function as vertical
columns. As tension elements, they also bear
the loads from the cantilevered sect ion of the
upper f loor, which is suspended from the roof.
The highly insulated external walls and roof,
the extremely low U-value of the glazing, and
the controlled ventilation of the internal spaces
coupled with a heat recovery system ensure a
low energy consumption that compl ies with
the Swiss "mineraie" standard.

Parkgelande anfallendes Abwasser reinigt.
DafUr wird dieses in einen unterirdischen
Tank oberhalb des lang gezogenen Gebau-
des gepumpt, wo zunachst ein anaerober
Abbau stattfindet.
fur UV-Strahlung. Vom auskragenden Kopf-
ende des Gebaudes kann der Besucher den
weiten Blick uber das Parkgelande genieBen.
On a roughly 26-acre site where lignite was
once mined, an environmental theme park has
been created, comprising various landscaped
areas and a number of pavilions. The "Water-
works" pavi lion demonstrates the pur if icat ion
of water by a so-cal led "living machine". After
initial anaerobic treatment, waste water from
the site is fed through a series of tanks along
the length of the pavilion, where it is purified
by water plants unt il it achieves dr inking-water
quali ty. The pavil ion has a clear, simple struc-
ture. The steel skeleton frame stands on the
concrete cross-walls that form the divisions be-
tween the tanks. The lightweight ETFE mem-
brane cushions to the facade and roof facilitate
a slenderly dimensioned structure and high UV
transmission.

Der Pavilion, ubsrwleqend aus Papier gebaut,
entspricht der Zielsetzung der EXPO 2000,
nachhaltige Architektur zu f6rdern. Die Gitter-schale der Haupthalle ist aus verschnurtsn
Pappr6hren konstruiert, die aus Altpapier her-
gestellt wurden. Die Giebelseiten bestehen
aus seilverspannten Kartonwabengittern. A is
Dachhaut wurde eine fUnfschichtige brand-
und wasserfeste Papiermembran speziell fUr
dieses Projekt entwickelt. Fur die Fundamente
haben die Architekten eine mit Gerustdielen
beplankte und mit Sand gefUllte Stahlkon-
struktion gewahlt, sodass das Gebaude nach
Ende der Ausstellung recycelt werden kann.
Da es fur Papierkonstruktionen bisher keine
Zulassung gibt, waren umfangreiche Ver-
suchsreihen erforderlich. Durch das starke
Kriechverhalten des Papiers musste die Kon-
struktion durch gebogene Holzleitern vorstarkt
werden, welche jetzt mit ihren Stahlabspan-
nungen die Lastabtragung ubernehrnen, Aus
Brandschutzgrunden forderte die Baubeh6r-
de, die Papiermembran mit einem zusatz-
lichen PVC-Gewebe zu uberziehsn. 1mBe-
reich der Holzleitern ist nur diese transparente
Schicht aufgebracht, wodurch die Hulle mit
helleren Lichtb6gen gegliedert wird. Textile
eigentlichen Ausstellungsbereich abo Die Spit-
zen der » lnseln- ragen aus der durchsichti-
gen Baumwolldecke heraus und wirken von
oben gesehen wie die Steinsetzungen eines
japanischen Gartens.
As an expression of sustainable architecture -
a central theme of the Expo - the pavilion was
constructed with recycled materials that can be
dismantled and used again. Over the main hall
is a lattice-grid shell of cardboard tubes. The
end walls are in a cable-tensioned cardboard
honeycomb construction, while the roof skin
consists of a f ive-layer fire- and waterproof
paper membrane. Even the sand-filled steel
foundations can be removed and used again
later. Extensive trials were necessary to obtain
planning approval, however. The structure had
to be reinforced with curved timber ladder gir-
ders, which, together with the steel stays, form
the real load-bearing elements; and the paper
membrane had to be covered with an additional
PVC fabric.

Wo seit den 80er-Jahren ein achteckiger, ein-
geschossiger Kuppelbau stand, findet sich
heute die Sushi-Bar einer Londoner Restau-rantkette. Uber die vorhandene Struktur des
fruheren Pavilions stulpt sich nun eine 14 x
14x 3,5 Meter groBe Box. In ihrer Materia-
litat und Transparenz erinnert sie an einen
japanischen Lampion: Die Fassade aus vor-
gefertigten, halbtransparenten Fiberglas-
Terrasse hinauslaufenden HolzfuBbodens
ineinander ubsr, Uber diesem »schwebsn-
die handgefertigten Sitzrnobel im Inneren
des Gebaudes, Filigran wie aus einem
Stuck gefaltet bilden sie eine Sitzlandschaft
um fest installierte Tische. Daruber spannt
sich die mit rot fluoreszierender Farbe ge-
strichene Decke.
lichen Schimmmer.
This sushi bar was superimposed on an ex-
isting single-storey octagonal, domed pavil ion.
A 14x 14x 3.5 m box-like enclosure was
erected over the former structure, so that it
now conjures the image of an Oriental lantern.
The facade, hovering over a transparent glass
plinth, consists of prefabr icated translucent
fibreg/ass elements and resembles a Japa-
nese paper screen. The building is crowned
by a strip of green-pat inated copper panels.
The eastem facade can be fully opened, al-
lowing the intemal space to extend out to an
extemal terrace. The luminous-red soffit radi-
ates out through a cruciform central roof light,
bathing the space around the restaurant in a
reddish glow at night.

und in die eingeschossige Galerie, in der
wechselnde Ausstellungen zeitgenossischer
Papierkunst zu sehen sind.
Beide Gebaude bestehen aus einer Stahl-

der traditionellen japanischen Architektur. In der zum Galeriegebaude umgebauten
Werkstatt wiederholt sich dieses Thema.
Hier sind es sechs geschosshohe Fassa-
densegmente, die sich entlang 5 Meter aus-
kragender Fuhrungsschienen nach auBen
schieben lassen und die vorgelagerte Ter-
rassentlache uberdachen, wahrend der
Ausstellungsraum gleichzeitig in Dialog mit
der umgebenden Natur tritt.
The Paper Art Museum comprises two build-
ings and is situated in Mishima, the capital of
the Japanese prefecture of Shizuoka, south-
west of Tokyo. As one of the largest papermanufacturers in the country, the client
wished to open his private collectiof to the
public and inform them about this ancient
Japanese craft. The collection is housed in
the three-storey museum tract. There is also
a single-storey gallery where temporary ex-
hibitions on modern paper art are presented.

Visitors have access to the complex via asmal l g lazed entrance hall.
Both tracts consist of a steel-frame structure
enclosed within a skin of translucent glass-
fibre-reinforced panels, which are used in
different forms. In the end faces, to the west
and east, the panels are incorporated in up-
and-over gates that open to a height of
nearly 10m. On the south side, segments of
the facade can be pivoted out on each floor
to an angle of 90°. These "shi tomido" ele-
ments, as they are known in traditional Jap-
anese architecture, serve here to provide
sunshading.
In the former workshop tract, which hasbeen converted into the gallery, the same
theme recurs. Six storey-height facade seg-
ments can be slid up and out along 5-metre
projecting tracks over the terrace to create a
protected outdoor area. In this way, the ex-
hibition space enters into a dialogue with the
natural environment around the museum.

Veterinargrenzstation in Spielfeld
Veterinary Border Station in Spielfeld
Architekt:
Wolfgang Feyferlik, GrazMitarbeiter:
Claudia Wemmers
Tragwerksp laner:
Alois Winkler, Graz
Seit dem EU-Beitritt Osterreichs liegt der
Orenzubsrqanq Spielfeld an der sudost-
lichen AuBengrenze der EU zu Siowenien.Hier besteht neben dem normalen Waren-
verkehr auch die M6glichkeit der Ein- und
Ausfuhr von lebendem Vieh und tierischen
Produkten. Die seit langem bestehenden
Einrichtungen fur die LKW-Abfertigung ent-
sprachen allerdings nicht mehr den heuti-
gen Anforderungen, deshalb wurden sie
durch zwei Neubauten srqanzt und teilweise
integriert. Anders als bei vielen anderen
Stationen stehen die Bauk6rper parallel zur
Fahrtrichtung und symbolisieren somit eine
»offene« Grenze.
schwarzen Flache verdichten.
Located on the border between Austria and
Slovenia, the station controls the import and
export of livestock and animal products. New
facilities have now been built for the clearance
of lorries. The buildings are laid out parallel to
the road to symbolize an "open" border. In
view of the extension of the EU, the station
will have a life of only 10-15 years. A simple
form of construction was chosen, therefore,
with steel beams and columns and with
ribbed metal sheeting to the walls and roofs,
all covered with a layer of plastic. Rainwater
runs over the edge of the roof and down the
facade, creating a changing pattem that re-
veals the high air pollution. In time, the streaks
wi ll develop into an ent ire ly black surface.

Atelier in Madrid
Studio in Madrid
Arch itekten:
Abalos & Herreros, MadridTragwerksp laner:
Juan Gomez, Madrid
ten. Um das homogene Erscheinungsbild
der Fassade nicht zu st6ren, sind auch die
Turen aus Kunststoff. Sie lassen das Innen-
leben des Gebaudss schemenhaft sichtbar
werden, nachts strahlen sie zusammen mit
den Oberlichtern in den AuBenraum. 1st
keine darnrnsnde Betonwand hinter der
Fassadenhulle, haben die Architekten die
Wellplatten in zwei Schichten ausgefUhrt. Sowirkt die dazwischen liegende Luftschicht
als Isolierung. Das transluzente Polycarbo-
nat erzeugt gleichmaBiges Licht im Innen-
raum. Das war ausschlaggebend bei
diesem Projekt, denn das Atelier wird von
einem Maler genutzt. Zusammen mit vorge-
hanqtsn Gipskartonplatten, weiB gestriche-
nen Stahlprofilen und dem Terrazzoboden
ergibt sich im Inneren eine nuchtorne, neu-
trale, aber doch angenehme Atmosphare -
wenn auch ohne AuBenbezug. Die Dach-
tlache des Studios ist teilweise mit Pflanzen
bewachsen, die dem trockenen Klima der
spanischen Hauptstadt standhalten. Sieziehen sich an der B6schungsseite auch
uber die AuBenwand.
This studio building is buried in the ground
along its rear face. The structure consists of
windowless reinforced concrete walls largely
clad with polycarbonate sheeting. The roof is
borne by a series of steel beams, with trussed
girders in the areas of the lantern lights. The
translucent polycarbonate cladding ensures
an even lighting quality internally for the
painter-c lient. Plasterboard wall l inings, white
painted steel members and terrazzo pavings
create a pleasantly restrained atmosphere,
despite the lack of visual links with the outside
world. To maintain the homogeneous appear-
ance of the facade, the doors are also in plas-
tic. At night, they radiate light like the lantern
structures on the roof.

Die AugustenstraBe in Berlin-Mitte ist von
grunderzeitlicher Blockrandbebauung ge-
praqt, Einer dieser Bl6cke, eine ehemalige
Margarinefabrik, ist im Auftrag des Kunst-
Werke Berlin e.V. saniert worden. Der
dsnkrnalqeschutzte Cebaudekomplex be-
steht aus einem barocken Vorderhaus
und einem viergeschossigen, spatsr errichte-
ten Hinterhaus. Neben Ausstellungsraumen
stehen den Kunstlern dort Wohnungen und
Ateliers zur VerfUgung. SchmuckstUck des
Ensembles ist jedoch ein im Innenhof liegen-
der Glask6rper. In einer Baulucke zwischen
der Ausstellungshalle im Hinterhaus und
einem Seitenflugel haben die Architekten
nach Ideen des amerikanischen Kunstlers
Dan Graham das Cafe Bravo errichtet. Mit
seiner spiegelnden, vieleckigen Front hebt
es sich von den umgebenden, hellen Putz-
fassaden deutlich aboDie im Grundriss aus
zwei gegeneinander verdrehten Quadraten
zusammengesetzte Hoffassade des Cafes
ist vollstandiq verglast. Die sllberqlanzendsn
VSG-Fensterelemente schlieBen mit den po-
lierten Edelstahlverkleidungen der dazwi-
schen stehenden Stahlprofile bundiq abo
Die Fassade erscheint als mehrwinklige
Spiegelwand, in die eine raumhohe GlastUr
mit Offnungsautomatik integriert ist. Die
Dachflache des vorderen Cafebsreichs ist
ebenfalls in VSG ausgefUhrt und im hinteren
Bereich an die Attika des baqrunten Beton-
flachdaches angeschlossen. Die Ruckwand
des Cafes, die zum NachbargrundstUck
abschlieBt, ist in Beton ausgefUhrt. 1mInne-
ren ist sie qanzflachlq mit Spiegeln ver-
kleidet.
Der vordere Be-
reich wird jedoch ganz von der Glasfassade
dominiert. Die schimmernde Obertlachs der
Verglasung erzeugt ein permanentes Spiel
zwischen Innen- und AuBenraum und gibt
dem Cafe seinen unverwechselbaren Cha-
rakter.
The glazed volume of Cafe Bravo forms the
centrepiece of a listed block that has been re-
furbished to accommodate exhibi tion spaces,
artists' dwellings and studios. Inserted into the
courtyard of what was formerly a margarine
factory, the cafe was based on an idea of the
US artist Dan Graham. The reflecting, angular
front of this structure is contrasted with the sur-
rounding light-coloured rendered facades. The
layout of the front part of the cafe is based on
two squares, tumed at an angle to each other.
The silvery, laminated-glass windows facing on
to the courtyard are set flush with the polished
stainless-steel supporting members, so that the
facade has the appearance of a zigzaggingmirror. Integrated into this face are room-height
glazed doors with automatic controls. The roof
over the front part of the cafe is also in glass,
and the rear concrete wall is clad over its entire
area with mirrors. The smooth screeded floor
and the exposed concrete side walls form asubdued contrast to the facades. The cafe de-
rives i ts unique character from its shimmering,
reflect ing surfaces and the interplay between
intemal and extemal space.
