Architectural Details, Inc. now offers all of its products for exterior application made of material that is extremely weather resistant. The material is polymer modified gypsum. It consists of polymer, resin, hardener, hydrocal, and fiberglass. The product can be produced from any of our moulds and presents gorgeous detail with a smooth finish. Architectural Details, Inc. can also alter the finish to simulate wood, stone, limestone, cement, etc.

You may price this material by adding 15% to any of our product prices. Trade price in polymer modified gypsum is equal to the normal retail price.

Architectural Details, Inc., is a full service ornamental plaster company who designs, manufactures, paints (full finish) and installs plaster ornament.

This studio can develop plaster ornament from contractor sketches, architectural blueprints, interior design layout plans or thumb nail sketches. The original designs presented in this catalog are copyrighted.

Manufacturing takes place at our suburban Orlando Studio/Showroom in Kissimmee, Florida. We use fiber-reinforced plaster or hydrocal. These materials are fireproof and non-toxic.

For exterior work, we use resin-type materials.

Our full finish painting services include woodgraining, marbleizing, antiquing, detailing and gilding. All work is done at our studio location or on site.

Architectural Details, Inc.'s installation is fully guaranteed. Our orders are processed quickly and efficiently. Many of our products are shipped within just a few days of your order! We will be happy to provide advice and suggestions for your architectural needs.

Ornament is usually fastened by glue and screws. All seams are sculpted by hand to insure continuity of design. Our catalog also includes installation procedures should you wish to install.

Many people ask where the designs come from that are used by plaster studios today. The answer is, quite simply, that they come from people just like you. The names given to these designs pass on the legacy of the people to whom they were dedicated, some from perhaps over one hundred years ago!

Any plaster ornament may be designed from your personal idea, photograph, or from the design found in the fabrics you are using in your interior decorating. Anything is possible! However, copyrights are honored.

This unique service is not available from all plaster shops. The artist designing the pieces in this studio was formally and technically educated by masters in the fields of sculpture, painting, design, ornamental architecture and interior decorating.

The design you choose will be given the name or title you desire and may be preserved for future generations to enjoy. Pass on your legacy...

Installation Procedures

Installation of Architectural Details, Inc.'s ornamental plaster products can be completed by our staff, carpenters, or the do-it-yourselfer. Following is a description of the installation procedures for various applications. Please call 407-483-0967, for further assistance.

Crown Moulding/Panel Moulding

Lay Out Room

Start by "laying out the room" with pieces cut to size to fit all walls and returns. It is helpful to mark the drop length of the crown with a chalk line to provide a reference point. Simply cut the pieces and nail them to the wall (two three nails supporting underneath the crown and one two nails nailed into the ceiling abutting the crown to keep it from falling forward off the bottom nails). On large crowns, it may be necessary to screw small 1 X 2's or 2 X 2's with the top edge lined up with the chalk line to hold these larger crown pieces in position. Mitres can be cut with a handsaw and mitre box (clean saw frequently for ease of cutting). Joints can be firmly fitted by additional shaping with sure forms and/or chisels at the butt joint. Mismatches should be allowed only at inside corner joints, as they are less noticeable at these locations.

Install Pieces To Wall

After all pieces have been cut to fit and have been nailed up to the wall, they may be taken down and predrilled to counter sink screws. On smaller crowns, two screws will suffice, larger, three to four, and very large, six to eight screws may be needed. Apply an industrial strength adhesive such as liquid nails, tile mastic, etc. to the backside of the moulding on the drop and projection areas, which adhere to the wall and ceiling, respectively. Then the piece may be screwed to the wall. On large crowns it may be necessary to screw the piece into studs. As additional pieces are attached to the wall, be sure to line up the profiles at the joints. It may be helpful to use various sized shims to help align joints if wall curvature becomes a problem.

Pointing And Caulking

Once all pieces are glued and screwed to the wall, it is time to point all joints and screw holes. To provide for smooth continuity of the moulding design, it may be necessary to sand and file the joints to line up all aspects of the contour. When all joints are prepared, apply wet plaster with a small spackling tool and small artist's paint brush to fill in the seams and screw holes.The plaster should be mixed with water in small amounts. Wet the surface to be pointed prior to application of the plaster (applied with the spackling tool) and use the wet brush to smooth over the applied plaster. After pointing of joints and screw holes is completed, run a bead of caulk along top and bottom edge of crown to fill in any gaps between crown and ceiling or wall. Wait two to three days before painting.It should be noted that very small panel mouldings such as the "Rope," "Bellflower," or "William Ribbon," may not require screws for installation. After applying glue and attaching them to the wall or ceiling, they may be supported by tape or small pushpins until the glue dries. Also, it may not be necessary to caulk smaller panel mouldings.



Ceiling medallions

Some ceiling medallions have circle openings in the design center to accommodate access to electrical boxes while others have a small center opening to accommodate a threaded rod for the wires to pass through. If a larger hole is desired in a medallion, it may be drilled.

Layout

Medallions, which have a large center opening, need to be glued and screwed to the ceiling. Screw holes may be predrilled and it is preferable on large medallions to line them up so that two or more screws will be drilled into studs. Various designs from Architectural Details, Inc. provide for ornamental covers or buttons over the screw holes to eliminate pointing of the screw holes.

Installing

Predrill screw holes, if needed. Apply industrial strength adhesive to the backside of the medallion and put into place on the ceiling with the center opening centered over the electrical box. Draw the screws up and the medallion should be secure. With designs that feature a smooth circumference edge it may be necessary to caulk around the outside of the medallion.Architectural Details, Inc.'s line of small center opening medallions (such as the Eisenmenger's) may be installed without glue or screws. See page E-2 for instructions.

Cartouches

Architectural Details ceiling cartouches may be installed in the same manner as the medallions. Some do include predrilled screw holes and covers or buttons.

Pointing

Pointing the screw holes on medallions and cartouches is the same process as that for crown and panel moulding (see crown/panel moulding installation instructions).

Small Ornamental Pieces

Architectural Details offers several small ornamental designs to be used as add-ons to crown moulding and medallions, or as individual decorative pieces/clusters. These may be applied with adhesive. No screws are necessary for these very small designs. It may be necessary to hold them in place with tape or small pushpins until the glue dries.

Brackets/Pilasters

Layout

Measure the distance from the top of the bracket/pilaster (backside) to the top of the opening on the back of the bracket/pilaster. Use this distance in planning for applying a nail or screw to hang the bracket on so as to insure the position of the top of the bracket to be at the desired location.

Installation

Predrill to counter sink screw holes on four corners of back plate of larger size brackets. Small brackets require no screws. Apply industrial strength adhesive to backside of bracket and apply bracket/pilaster to wall with backside hanging onto the nail or screw previously attached to the wall. If necessary, screw in the screws that were predrilled on the bracket/pilaster. Caulk outside edge of bracket/pilaster.

Pointing

Screw holes may be pointed by the same procedure as for crown moulding. See crown moulding/panel moulding installation.
